Green Buildings: A Solution for Cities
Cities consume energy and produce a vast amount of emissions and waste, putting a strain on both human and ecological health. But our buildings themselves may hold a solution. High-density (高密度) urban areas — especially those built using green methods in design and construction — can be more energy efficient and pollute less. New research is also revealing that green buildings can actually be good for our health too.
The Building Blocks of Cities
What Makes a Green Building?
Though standards for green buildings vary, they’re generally designed to use less energy and water and improve indoor air quality. The most widely used certification is LEED. Buildings that earn this certification often include key features like solar panels, green roofs and eco-friendly materials.
Health Benefits
Regulatory efforts focus on outdoor air, even though people spend most of their time indoors, where air quality and other aspects can impact both physical health and mental functioning. Thankfully, green buildings are designed to address these indoor environmental effects.
1. What is the aim of green buildings as a solution for cities?
A. To promote energy output. B. To make buildings more modern.
C. To promote people’s physical health. D. To make cities more sustainable.
2. By how many percentage points will the proportion of urban population rise from today to 2050?
A. 15. B. 30. C. 40. D. 70.
3. Which of the following is a benefit of green buildings?
A. Enhancing light brightness. B. Improving sleep quality.
C. Controlling noise sources. D. Sharpening thinking skills.
根据文章第一段“Cities consume energy and produce a vast amount of emissions and waste, putting a strain on both human and ecological health. But our buildings themselves may hold a solution. High-density (高密度) urban areas — especially those built using green methods in design and construction — can be more energy efficient and pollute less. (城市消耗能源,产生大量排放物和废弃物,对人类健康和生态健康造成压力。但我们的建筑本身或许蕴含着解决方案。高密度城市区域——尤其是采用绿色设计与建造方法的地区——可能更加节能且污染更少。)”可知,绿色建筑的目的是通过节能和减少污染来解决城市面临的环境压力,即让城市更具可持续性。D选项“To make cities more sustainable. (让城市更具可持续性)”符合题意。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据The Building Blocks of Cities 部分中的图片信息“Nearly 70% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, up from 55% today.(到2050年,全球近70%的人口将生活在城市中,而目前这一比例为55%。)”
根据Health Benefits中 “Regulatory efforts focus on outdoor air, even though people spend most of their time indoors, where air quality and other aspects can impact both physical health and mental functioning. Thankfully, green buildings are designed to address these indoor environmental effects. (监管工作主要关注室外空气,尽管人们大部分时间都在室内度过,而室内空气质量及其他因素可能影响身体健康和认知功能。幸运的是,绿色建筑的设计旨在应对这些室内环境问题。)”以及图片中的信息“In one study, brain function doubled with enhanced ventilation(通风). Better air quality also leads to faster, clearer decision-making at work.( 一项研究发现,脑功能在通风改善的情况下翻倍。更好的空气质量还能使工作中的决策更迅速、更清晰。)”可知,绿色建筑通过改善室内环境,有助于提升人们的认知功能或思维技能。D选项“Sharpening thinking skills. (提升思维技能)”符合题意。
B
Every time I walk into the library and pick out yet another great book, I cannot help but remember how it all started. When I was little, I loved books mostly because of their beautiful illustrations, like animals, children, landscapes, and so on. All this changed when my aunt Kate moved in with us.
Previously, my mom would pick a book and explain all the illustrations in it. My aunt on the other hand would passionately read the story to me, which ignited (点燃) my love of books and language.
Even when I was old enough to read by myself, she still kept track of what I read and sometimes made a few suggestions. When I was eight and thought it was time for me to read my first thousand-page novel, all she did was smile. The fact was that from the time my aunt first satisfied my thirst for a well-written book, I started a journey to explore the beauty of language.
However, unknown to me then was the fact that my interest in her reading helped her realize her dream of being a children’s book writer. Now she has over a dozen children’s books under her authorship.
I have changed my career choice a few times in the course of my life — a novelist, journalist, and script (剧本) writer. It does not matter what I end up doing, but my love for language will have to be reflected in my career path.
My aunt used to tell me, “Language is like a tree. While its roots dig for the goodness, it is the leaves that are bathed in it.” I have decided to keep digging and I am sure the goodness will be reflected in my life.
4. What can we learn about the author’s earliest reading experience?
A. He liked the colorful covers of books.
B. He preferred to read with great passion.

D. He loved the pretty pictures in the books.
5. What inspired the author to explore the beauty of language?
A. His aunt’s career dream. B. His aunt’s writing thirst.
C. His aunt’s patient guidance. D. His aunt’s passionate voice.
6. How did the author help his aunt achieve her goal?
A. By sharing his stories. B. By making comments.
C. By being her audience. D. By offering suggestions.
7. What can be inferred about the author from the last paragraph?
A. He will stick to seeking the truth of life.
B. He will go on pursuing the art of language.
C. He will keep reflecting on his career choices.
D. He will continue to spread children’s goodness.
D 5. C 6. C 7. B

C
Recently, I accidentally found a set of Hanfu I only wore once from the bottom of the cupboard. I remember buying them simply to match the ancient-style hair accessories (配饰) a friend gave me. It occurred to me that I had been trapped in the “birdcage effect”.
“Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more things to match it. Weeks ago, I went shopping with friends. One friend wanted to buy a fine pair of running shoes to match the running suit her sister sent her. She hoped it would push her to stick to running and develop a real love for sports. I joked that she must have fallen for the “birdcage effect”. But she smiled and asked why we couldn’t make good use of it instead.
For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向). However, this can’t help but remind me of my middle-school days, when the “birdcage effect” worked on me. My friend gave me an elegant notebook as a gift. With such a fine notebook in hand, I felt it should not remain empty. So I started writing with eager hands, and then I fell in love with writing.
After shopping with my friends that time, I began to proceed to use the effect. I bought a small fresh tablecloth to decorate my desk, and a beautiful notebook to record my inspiration. When everything was ready, I started writing again.
But how can we avoid being troubled by the “birdcage effect” and even use it in the opposite way? Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can distinguish them. If it is not in line with reality and becomes negative, we must learn to stop losses in time and maintain a heart of abandonment and separation. If it is a positive one that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and push ourselves to move towards our targets. At this time, you will find that the “birdcage effect” is actually not so terrible!
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The application of the “birdcage effect” in life.
B. The necessity of using the “birdcage effect” in life.
C. The turning point of the author’s idea on the “birdcage effect”.
D. The author’s conflict with her friend over the “birdcage effect”.
9. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning her middle school experience?
A. To recall her delightful days at school.
B. To explain the reason for her love with writing.
C. To confirm the positive effect of the “birdcage effect”.
D. To prove her knowledge of the “birdcage effect”.
10. How can we make use of the “birdcage effect” positively?
A. By realizing this effect has two sides.
B. By promoting our personal consumption.
C. By recognizing this effect is not so terrible.
D. By directing our actions toward reasonable goals.
11. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Getting Rid of the Birdcage Effect Confidently
B. Motivating Ourselves to Move Towards Our Goals
C. The Birdcage Effect: Influence on Consumer Behavior
D. The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage
C 9. C 10. D 11. D
根据第二段“Weeks ago, I went shopping with friends. One friend wanted to buy a fine pair of running shoes to match the running suit her sister sent her. She hoped it would push her to stick to running and develop a real love for sports. I joked that she must have fallen for the “birdcage effect”. But she smiled and asked why we couldn’t make good use of it instead.(几周前,我和朋友们去购物。 C选项“The turning point of the author’s idea on the ‘birdcage effect’.( 作者对“鸟笼效应”这一观点的转折点。)”
根据文章第三段开头“For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向). (我第一次听说“鸟笼效应”可以被逆向使用。)”以及“My friend gave me an elegant notebook as a gift. With such a fine notebook in hand, I felt it should not remain empty. So I started writing with eager hands, and then I fell in love with writing.( 朋友送给我一本精美的笔记本作为礼物。手握这样一本精致的笔记本,我感觉它不该空着。于是,我满怀热忱地开始书写,从此爱上了写作。)”可知,作者回忆起中学时朋友送了一个精美的笔记本,这让她觉得它不应该空着,于是开始写作并爱上了写作。作者自身的亲身经历来证明“鸟笼效应”可以被逆向使用,并且产生积极的推动作用。因此,提及中学经历的目的是为了证实“鸟笼效应”的积极面。C选项“To confirm the positive effect of the “birdcage effect”.(以确认“鸟笼效应”的积极效果。)”
根据文章最后一段中的“If it is a positive one that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and push ourselves to move towards our targets. (如果它是一个能激励我们向上的积极因素,我们可以明确目标,适当地购物或装饰,并推动自己朝着目标前进。)”可知,要积极地利用“鸟笼效应”,关键在于明确目标,并将行动导向合理的目标。D选项“By directing our actions toward reasonable goals.(通过将我们的行动指向合理的目标。)”
根据第二段中““Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more things to match it. (“鸟笼效应”是指当你有一天得到一件物品时,你会准备更多的东西来搭配它。)”,以及第三段中“For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向).(第一次听说“鸟笼效应”可以反向使用)”以及最后一段中“If it is a positive one that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and push ourselves to move towards our targets. D选项“The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage (鸟笼效应:如何将其化为己用) ”能够概括文章主旨。
D
We often view relationships on a scale from positive to negative. We are drawn to loving family members, caring classmates and supportive mentors, while trying our best to avoid cruel, aggressive or rude people. However, the most toxic relationships are not purely negative ones, but those mixing positive and negative elements. They are often described as frenemies, supposed friends who offer help yet do harm. This mixed pattern is not limited to friends: relatives may volunteer to care for your kids but belittle your parenting, and managers may praise your work yet deny your promotion.
Most people feel uncomfortable with such relationships. Groundbreaking research by psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt-Lunstad shows that these ambivalent relationships can do greater harm to physical health than totally negative ones. It is natural to assume that some positive interactions are better than all-negative ones. Yet being cheered on by the same person who cuts you down doesn’t reduce the bad feelings; it increases them. And it’s not just in your head: It leaves a trace in your heart and your blood.
Even a single ambivalent interaction can bring harm. In one experiment, participants gave unprepared speeches on controversial topics and received feedback from friends. Those friends were randomly arranged to provide either ambivalent or purely negative comments. Surprisingly, mixed feedback led to higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.”
Though strong evidence shows ambivalent relationships are harmful, the underlying reasons are complicated. One key cause is unpredictability. With a clear enemy, you put up a shield when you cross paths. With a frenemy, you never know whether Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde is going to show up. It’s unsettling to hope for a hug while also preparing for a likely quarrel. Besides, unpleasant interactions are more painful in ambivalent relationships. Disappointment from someone you sometimes like is more painful than offence from people you always dislike, and betrayal from a seemingly friendly person stings far more.
12. Which of the following can be counted as a frenemy?
A. Your relative who always speaks highly of you but criticizes his own kid.
B. Your neighbour’s kid who urges you to study hard yet wastes his own time.
C. Your classmate who admires your diligence but later doubts your intelligence.
D. Your friend who encourages you to focus more on homework and less on sports.
13. What can we infer about Ambivalent relationships?
A. The common cause of high blood pressure is ambivalent relationship.
B. Ambivalent relationships have a permanent effect on one’s well-being.
C. One can hardly predict how others will behave in ambivalent relationships.
D. Interactions in ambivalent relationships are more painful than those in negative ones.
14. What does the underlined word “distressing” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Upsetting. B. Satisfying. C. Inspiring. D. Confusing.
15. What will the author probably discuss in the following paragraph?
A. Ways to build more supportive family relationships.
B. How to deal with ambivalent relationships in daily life.
C. Reasons why ambivalent relationships do harm to people.
D. Further experiments on measuring the harm to human bodies.
C 13. C 14. A 15. B
根据第一段中的“However, the most toxic relationships are not purely negative ones, but those mixing positive and negative elements. They are often described as frenemies, supposed friends who offer help yet do harm. (然而,最具毒性的关系并非纯粹负面的,而是那些混合了正面和负面元素的。它们通常被描述为“亦敌亦友”,即表面上是朋友,提供帮助却又造成伤害的人。)”可知,“frenemy”的核心特征是“既有正面(如赞美、帮助)又有负面(如贬低、伤害)”的矛盾行为。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“One key cause is unpredictability. With a clear enemy, you put up a shield when you cross paths. With a frenemy, you never know whether Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde is going to show up. It’s unsettling to hope for a hug while also preparing for a likely quarrel.
以及“I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said. (“我会用不同的方式来探讨这个话题,不过你表现得还不错”被证明比“我完全不同意你说的每一句话”更令人……)”可知,混合反馈比纯粹的批评引起的血压更高,说明这种带有矛盾色彩的反馈更让人心烦意乱、感到不适。A选项“Upsetting(令人心烦意乱的、难受的)”与划线词意思相近,符合题意。
根据最后一段首句“Though strong evidence shows ambivalent relationships are harmful, the underlying reasons are complicated. (虽然有强有力的证据表明矛盾关系是有害的,但其潜在原因很复杂。)”以及后文“One key cause is unpredictability. (一个关键原因是不可预测性)”和“Besides, unpleasant interactions are more painful in ambivalent relationships. (此外,在矛盾关系中,不愉快的互动会更加令人痛苦。)”对矛盾关系产生害处的原因进行了解释,因此提出问题,分析原因之后,接下来应该探讨“如何应对或解决该问题”。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
What is adulthood? Societies all over the world view the concept of an adult as self-supporting and self-directed, because it identifies a point in the life cycle.
As Alice Black points out, today’s parents’ fear of letting kids do more housework has added to their inability to feel competent and, thus, confident in themselves. Psychologist Robert Turner wrote about this in his book, The Life Cycle, mentioning a stage when kids learn self-direction and mastery. ____16____
But Turner’s other cycles are just as important. ____17____ If these life cycles are delayed, interrupted, or denied, you feel incapable of accessing your states of self, controlling unpleasant feelings, and manipulating (操控) the energy that puts together the fabric of your inner world.
Turner wisely said that “doing well” psychologically is being able to roll with the flow of emotions, manage them, communicate clearly and well with others, and master various skills. This requires an internal locus (核心) of control, which implies self-control of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. ____18____ You’re self-directed and not reliant on the world to tell you who you are. And you know who you are within all this.
So, being an adult isn’t just holding a job. Being an adult is about having a rooted sense of self while being capable of identifying and managing your emotions and actions. ____19____ We are a social species, so this is important.
While raising an adult is a parent’s job, it’s also our responsibility as a society to ensure that we support schools that nurture (培养) emotional and identity development. ____20____.
A. When this stage is denied it creates a sense of insecurity.
B. You feel like an 18-year old, especially when playing 80s music.
C. They teach emotional awareness and management as well as identity.
D. It’s being able to show understanding when communicating with others.
E. In other words, you’re playing the game of life — life isn’t playing you.
F. They talk about someone’s inability to support themselves through work.
G. It’s also our job to support adults who need help repairing incomplete life cycles.
A 17. C 18. E 19. D 20. G
上文“Psychologist Robert Turner wrote about this in his book, The Life Cycle, mentioning a stage when kids learn self-direction and mastery.(心理学家Robert Turner在他的书《生命周期》中提到了这一点,提到了一个孩子们学习自我导向和掌握技能的阶段。)”引出了Turner关于“自我导向和掌握技能”这一特定成长阶段的观点;A选项“When this stage is denied it creates a sense of insecurity.(当这个阶段被剥夺时,会产生一种不安全感。)”中的“this stage”指代上文的“a stage when kids learn self-direction and mastery(孩子们学习自我导向和掌握技能的阶段)”,且从反面论述该阶段的重要性,符合题意。
上文“But Turner’s other cycles are just as important.(但Turner的其他周期也同样重要。)”提到了其他阶段;C选项“They teach emotional awareness and management as well as identity.(它们教授情绪意识和管理,以及身份认同。)”中的代词“They”指代上文的“Turner’s other cycles(Turner的其他周期)”,并具体说明了这些周期所教授的内容,即情绪管理和身份认同,同时与下文“If these life cycles are delayed, interrupted, or denied, you feel incapable of accessing your states of self, controlling unpleasant feelings, and manipulating (操控) the energy that puts together the fabric of your inner world.(如果这些生命周期被延迟、中断或遭到否定,你就会感到无法触及自身的内在状态,无法控制不愉快的情绪,也无法掌控构成你内心世界结构的能量。)”
上文“This requires an internal locus (核心) of control, which implies self-control of your thoughts, feelings, and actions.(这需要内在的控制点,意味着对自己的思想、情感和行为进行自我控制。)”强调了“内在控制点”和“自我控制”的重要性;E选项“In other words, you’re playing the game of life — life isn’t playing you.(换句话说,是你掌控生活,而不是生活在掌控你。)”
上文“Being an adult is about having a rooted sense of self while being capable of identifying and managing your emotions and actions.(成为一个成年人意味着拥有扎根的自我意识,同时能够识别和管理自己的情绪和行为。)”定义了成年人在情绪和行为管理上的能力;D选项“It’s being able to show understanding when communicating with others.(它是在与他人沟通时能够表现出理解。)”进一步补充了成年人在社交沟通层面的具体表现,其中“show understanding”,与上文“managing your emotions”在人际交往中的体现相呼应,且引出下文“We are a social species, so this is important.(我们是社会性物种,所以这很重要。)”
上文“While raising an adult is a parent’s job, it’s also our responsibility as a society to ensure that we support schools that nurture (培养) emotional and identity development.(虽然培养成年人是父母的工作,但作为社会,我们也有责任确保支持那些培养情绪和身份认同发展的学校。)”提出了社会支持学校培养情绪和身份认同的责任;G选项“It’s also our job to support adults who need help repairing incomplete life cycles.(支持那些需要帮助修复不完整生命周期的成年人也是我们的工作。)”中的“It’s also our job”与上文的“it’s also our responsibility”形成并列结构,从“支持学校”延伸到“支持成年人”,完善了社会责任的论述,符合题意。

fascinate sb. with sth.

Say No to Plastic Pollution
I’m greatly honored to deliver a speech on refusing plastic pollution.
Plastic pollution has become an increasingly severe ecological crisis worldwide. Most plastic products can barely be recycled and take hundreds of years to decompose. Even remote natural habitats are flooded with plastic waste, which endangers all living species.
Serious as the situation is, positive changes are still within our reach. It is high time that we abandoned single‑use plastics and turned to eco‑friendly alternatives in daily life. We can carry reusable bags, avoid plastic tableware and raise public environmental awareness.
Only by consistent joint efforts can we restore our damaged ecosystem and build a sustainable future. Thank you for listening!

I’ve recently become interested in mountain climbing. It’s mainly due to my friend Tim, an experienced hiker. Initially, I saw hiking as pointless — exhausting muscles under the burning sun, carrying heavy loads, with no easy way back. Why endure (忍受) that?
Last month, Tim convinced me to join him in climbing a small hill. To my surprise, the view from the top was breathtaking. I witnessed an amazing sunset over the sea. That humble peak offered unexpected joy, awakening a desire for more — cloud seas, sunrises, and bird’s-eye views. After a few more mountain climbing attempts, I declared, “I will challenge the Hero’s Route!” It was a demanding 20-kilometer trail (小径) across several high peaks, a test of “heroes.”
But Tim tried to cool me down. “It’s not easy,” he warned. “It requires training, not just enthusiasm.” But I believed “Nothing is impossible in front of a willing heart,” so the following weekend I set off alone without telling Tim. I decided to give him a big surprise.
At the foot of the mountain, I saw some groups of climbers with walkie-talkies. I laughed — real heroes journey alone. The first peak was rewarding, with cool winds and glimpses of the sea. But as I pushed onward, the trail turned wild and rugged. Steep rocks forced me to crawl on all fours. The sky darkened, threatening rain. Tiredness set in, and the other climbers had all overtaken me, leaving me completely alone. The trail seemed endless. Rain soon poured and I was wet through. The rocks became slippery, making every step a struggle. To make matters worse, my phone had no signal. Desperation mounted in me.
Around 5:30 PM, there were still two peaks ahead. Exhausted and having barely progressed, I found a weak signal on my phone and hurriedly called Tim. He was shocked, but after checking my location, he calmly gave me instructions. “Stop going ahead. You’ve just passed a side trail down to a village. It is marked with a blue ribbon (丝带). Find it and take the path — I’ll meet you midway.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
But now I hesitated, because taking the side trail meant failure.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Climbing down the path to the village at night was still very challenging.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But now I hesitated, because taking the side trail meant failure. I stood there, looking at the two peaks ahead. The rain was still pouring down, and the rocks were getting more and more slippery. I thought about my decision to challenge the Hero’s Route. Was it just for a moment of pride? Or was it really a test of my will? I took a deep breath. Maybe Tim was right. Training is necessary. But at this moment, safety is more important. I decided to take the side trail. After all, there will be more opportunities to challenge in the future.
Climbing down the path to the village at night was still very challenging. The path was narrow and dark. I had to be very careful. But I was not alone. I knew Tim was waiting for me midway. As I walked, I thought about my experience. Although I didn’t complete the Hero’s Route this time, I learned a lot. I learned to respect nature and my own strength. When I finally saw Tim’s figure in the distance, I felt a sense of relief. We hugged each other. “You made the right decision,” Tim said. I nodded. This experience will definitely make me a better climber in the future.

C. He enjoyed telling stories to his parents.

注意:
