Aunt Dete pulled young Heidi up the mountain, holding her small hand tightly. The five-year-old girl, with her dark curly hair, couldn’t help showing her excitement although her aunt seemed so serious.
Finally, they reached a wooden house. An old man was sitting there and smoking.
“Uncle Alm,” Dete said, “I brought Heidi to live with you. She’s your son’s child, and I can’t keep her anymore. I get a good job in Frankfurt.”
The old man’s eyes darkened. “And what makes you think I want her?”
“She’s your granddaughter! You’re the only family she has!”
“Take her back. I want nothing to do with people,” he cried in an angry tone (语气).
But Heidi, without listening to them, saw a goat (山羊) and got very excited. “Is that your goat? He’s beautiful! Do you have more? Can I see them?”
The look on the grandfather’s face didn’t change, but his eyes followed the child’s movements.
“She’s staying,” Dete said firmly, already turning to leave. “I’ll send her things later.”
“Goodbye, Aunt Dete!” Heidi said happily. She wasn’t sad — she was too busy looking at everything around the house. The grandfather watched in silence as Dete disappeared.
“Come inside,” he said. “If you’re staying, you need to know where to sleep.”
He took her to the hayloft (干草棚). “You can sleep here.”
Heidi’s eyes lit up. “My own bed in the sky! Look, Grandfather, I can see the whole mountain from here!”
The old man’s eyes softened (柔和) a little when seeing her excitement and joy.
In the next few days, Heidi enjoyed her every minute in the mountains. She played with the goats, sang with the birds and danced with the wind. Wherever she went, there was her laughter. ________
One evening, as they sat outside watching the sunset, Heidi rested on her grandfather’s knee. “I love it here,” she said.
He didn’t speak, but his eyes lost their coldness. The old man placed his rough (粗糙的) hand gently on her curly hair. Heidi knew she finally found her real home on the mountain.

Perhaps you’ve looked through social media and seen teenagers your age starting businesses, winning awards or going viral (爆红). It can easily feel like everyone is doing something amazing, except you. But here’s something no one says enough: It’s completely OK to be a “nobody.” Being ordinary doesn’t mean you have little value. It means you’re human, and that’s a great place to start.
This celebration of the ordinary finds a strong resonance (共鸣) in one of this summer’s box-office hits, Nobody. The animated (动画的) film follows a little pig monster who dreams of entering the King’s cave but accidentally offends him. For this reason, he is forced to leave Langlang Mountain along with his childhood friend, a toad monster. During their journey, they meet a clever weasel monster and a strong orangutan monster. Together, they pretend to be the Tang Monk and his disciples from Journey to the West, form an “ordinary scripture-seeking team,” and start an adventure full of challenges and growth. Although they are still unknown in the end, their courage makes them the heroes of their own story. Nobody finally encourages every “nobody” to bravely go after the life they want.
Despite the film’s positive message, the real world often puts on us too much pressure to stand out. That is, to be a “somebody” whose name is known by countless, faceless people out there. The idea that a life lived in being unknown is equal to achieving little has taken root in many people’s hearts. But life isn’t a race to fame or a contest for popularity. Of course, every generation produces individuals recognized for doing great things that make the world a better place. Maybe one day you, too, will leave your mark on humanity. If you do, just make sure it’s one worth remembering. And if you never get the chance? It doesn’t really matter. What’s important is having the courage to grow into the kind of person you want to be. You don’t need 10,000 followers. You don’t even need to be one of those followers. You just need to be brave enough to take one small step forward, every day, to becoming a better you.
Every decision you make shapes you. Facing challenges bravely, not letting failure define you, speaking up, and choosing kindness—this makes you worthy of self-respect. You don’t need all answers; goals just need to make you happy. The American writer E. E. Cummings once said: To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.
You’ll always be a somebody to someone, and a nobody to almost everyone else. If you’re proud of the things you do in your life, if you can make a positive difference to the lives of others, even just a few, isn’t that what being human is all about?

①At a summer barbecue, mosquitoes feast on some guests while others stay bite-free. New research helps explain why: Some people just taste better.
②Mosquitoes like certain ingredients in our sweat, says Lisa Baik at Yale University. She studies how insects, especially mosquitoes, sense their world. Baik’s team shared their findings last November in Nature. Mosquitoes feed on the blood of the animals they bite. They leave saliva in the skin that can carry harmful microbes (微生物) and cause diseases like malaria (疟疾) and dengue (登革热). Knowing what causes mosquitoes to bite or not can help researchers develop better methods of control. For example, according to Baik’s team, mosquitoes taste the surface before biting. This means that sweat may play a big role in their decision. Human sweat contains water, salt and amino acids (氨基酸).
③To find out what mosquitoes prefer, the researchers put salt and amino acids on separate surfaces. Mosquitoes ignored both. However, when the team combined them on the same surface, the mosquitoes bit. The researchers then looked at activity in certain mosquito nerve cells (神经细胞) involved in taste. Some sweat samples had a larger effect on the activity of these nerves than others. “That suggests taste could be one of the factors in why some of us get bitten a lot more than others,” Baik says.
④Baik wanted to explore how taste might affect a mosquito’s choice of target. Tasting requires touch. We use our lips, mouth and tongue to taste. So do mosquitoes. A long tube extends (延伸) from their face like a straw (吸管). At the end of that “straw” are two small, lip-like parts that can touch a surface. The researchers examined those lips using a special microscope (显微镜). They had little hairs on them. Nerve cells inside the hairs responded to touch.
⑤Then the team tested how the hairs responded to different flavor molecules. When sugars touched the hairs, they activated the nerve cells. Some bitter compounds, though, blocked the nerve cells’ response to sugar. “This was exciting and surprising,” says Baik, “This type of activity blocking hasn’t been seen in other insects.” Adding bitter substances to sugar reduced the sweet response. It also made the mosquitoes less likely to feed. “This suggested that we could use bitter compounds as a way to stop the feeding behavior of mosquitoes,” says Baik.
⑥Baik is now hunting for just the right compound to stop mosquitoes from biting people. The substance should be safe, low-cost and eco-friendly. It could someday be included in a spray (喷雾) for skin and clothing.
32. According to Paragraph 2, what role does sweat play in mosquito bites?
A. Sweat has no effect on whether mosquitoes bite.
B. Sweat may greatly influence mosquitoes’ decision to bite.
C. Only the salt in sweat attracts mosquitoes.
D. Mosquitoes bite people just because of the amino acids in sweat.
33. Which of the following is TRUE about mosquitoes’ tasting process?
A. Mosquitoes taste using their tongues just like humans.
B. The “straw-like” tube on mosquitoes’ faces is used for biting only.
C. The small hairs on mosquitoes’ lip-like parts help with tasting through touch.
D. Bitter compounds make mosquitoes more likely to feed on sweet substances.
34. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Mosquitoes’ Harmful Effects on Humans B. How to Stop Mosquitoes from Biting

Chengdu, a city in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, is the first in the Chinese mainland to host the World Games (TWG). This big sports event for non-Olympic sports will be held from August 7 to August 17. Recently, the torch (火炬) for the World Games 2025 Chengdu was shown to the public. It’s named “Zhumeng”, which means “Bamboo Dream” in Chinese and sounds like “chasing dreams” (逐梦). This is the first ever torch in TWG’s history.
The torch’s design is inspired (赋予灵感) by the Grand Bronze Standing Figure (青铜大立人) from the Sanxingdui Ruins in Sichuan. The Grand Bronze Standing Figure is a famous treasure from the Sanxingdui civilization (文明), one of China’s oldest cultures. Using this figure in the torch design (设计) shows the wisdom of Chinese culture’s togetherness in differences. The torch looks like both a tall figure and a proud bamboo shoot. In China, bamboo stands for modesty (谦逊) and strength. It is also ideal for symbolizing sports because it shows togetherness, hard work, and health.
As home to pandas, Sichuan has lots of bamboo forests, the favorite food of pandas. The top of the torch is shaped like a young bamboo shoot with two buds (芽) stretching out. This symbolizes an open and friendly China welcoming the world. The whole torch looks like a strong bamboo stalk, showing the sports spirit of unity and trying hard.
The torch’s nozzle (喷嘴) is like the Sun‑shaped Crown worn by a small bronze figure found at the Jinsha Site in Chengdu. It shows Chengdu’s deep culture and gives athletes (运动员) endless energy, like the sun. It also symbolizes their spirit of wanting to do their best.
At the bottom of the torch, a phoenix-shaped bird holds it up. There is an old saying: “When a holy bird flies and sings, peace is in the world.” It shows China’s rich culture and our hope for world peace.

Studying is important to students. But it is always difficult to find enough time to study every subject you need. So a good plan helps you to make sure of your success in study.
Then, how to make a study plan? Well, you can begin with listing all the subjects you need to study and make sure what you need to do for each subject. Next, you should decide how much time you should spend on different subjects. Now, it is a good idea to study at the same time every day. In this way, you actually have a plan you can remember easily. While arranging (安排) time for each subject, you also need to make sure that you still have time for family, friends and rest. This is because you can’t succeed in your studies unless you balance your personal life and your study.
Once the plan is made, the next thing you need to do is to follow it. One of the biggest challenges in following your study plan is that you will be tempted (诱惑) to avoid it and do something relaxing, or fun instead. Luckily, you can fight this temptation by taking breaks. But be sure not to take extra breaks or too long breaks as it can affect your plan. So at the start of your break, set an alarm clock to remind you when your break is over. Also, you need to use your break wisely. For example, go for a short walk, eat a small snack, or listen to some music.
To avoid forgetting to follow your plan, try to get into the habit of looking at your calendar (日历) every day. Sometimes our plans are hard to follow because some important people in our lives distract (使分心) us from our goals. In order to avoid this, tell people in your life about your plan. Put up a copy of your study guide at home so you and your family can see it, and email a copy to your friends so they know when you have spare time.
For students, it’s a challenge to find enough time for every subject. A good study plan can help you manage your time well and ________59________.
To make a study plan, ________60________. First, make a list of all the subjects you need to study and decide on the time for each subject. Study at the same time every day, or you will forget your plan. Also, you will be able to achieve success ________61________.
After making the plan, the key is to follow it. Fight temptation by taking breaks. Set an alarm clock to remind yourself and use your break in ________62________. Develop the habit of checking the calendar daily, and let your family and friends know when you are free.

My Effective Learning Methods
Our school carried out a survey among 1,200 students on the topic of “My Effective Learning Methods”. Here are the results.
According to the chart, nearly half of the students think making study plans is effective. About 30% of them prefer managing time wisely, while around 25% choose learning by group work. As for me, making study plans works best. In the past, I often felt stressed because I didn’t know what to do first. Then I started to make a list of tasks every day. By doing this, I can finish my homework on time and have more free time. My grades have also improved a lot.
In a word, a good study plan makes me study more efficiently. I believe everyone can find their own effective learning methods.
