I’m rather good at taking maps. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, the last day of vacation, my daughters, my cousin and I, driving along a main road in Oregon. There were no other cars on the road, and the sun had just gone down. Where was that sweet little village?
It was supposed to be right along this river. We drove on farther into the unknown. The river was always on the left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and now a few lights were coming out. I was angry with myself and thinking: Why didn’t we start earlier, bring the map and on and on? My cousin and I were both worried and could not be patient anymore. My daughter, at least, was happy in the back seat, texting a friend. I stopped on the shoulder of the road to think.
Just then—Wow! Amazing! A new scene had appeared. Where did it come from?
Right there, out of nowhere, was an area of wonderful natural beauty. Fields in silent purples, with rows of tall trees, were getting darker and darker as the sun went down. I turned the car engine off. All was silent in the hot summer air. Beside us, a purple river hardly moved between the trees. Its dark lazy water was reflecting the last light of day.
How fascinating! When had it been? If I had seen even a bit of this beauty while driving along, I could have stopped and taken a look. I had missed it all.
In fact, we miss a lot, almost everything in our world. We need to get to work, have some lunch. … We see what we need to see, often for purposes of survival! In our daily lives, who or what is making the choice? Can we make a change? Can we see further?

Besides creating artistic works, Yu has made great efforts to let more people know about and learn his painting style as a cultural heritage (文化遗产) of China. “Art is part of my life,” Yu says. “I am proud to be a flower-bird painter. I hope to create a bright future for it through my efforts.”
