When Li Mei walked into her first Senior 3 math class, she kept her eyes on the floor. She had spent the summer going
over old notes, but the moment she sat down, none of it seemed to stay in her head.Math had never been easy for her,and
she had heard from older students that this year moved fast. When the teacher handed back the first monthly exam, she saw a

red 68 at the top of the page.
She sat there after class, staring at the paper. The classroom was empty except for her.She copied the wrong questions
into a notebook, trying to work out where she had gone wrong, but half of them still did not make sense.Mr.Zhang,her math
teacher, came back to fetch his jacket. He looked at her notebook, then at her face."Stay for a minute,"he said.
He did not give her a speech. He sat down and worked through two problems with her, step by step. When she still
looked confused,he drew a small diagram in the margin of her notebook.Come back at lunch tomorrow if you want,"he
said,and left.
She went back the next day,and the day after that. Some days she understood more, some days less.Mr.Zhang never
seemed to mind repeating himself.By the end of the term, her scores had moved up-not dramatically, but enough that she
no longer dreaded math class. She still got questions wrong, but she had stopped crumpling up her paper when she did.
Years later, when she became a teacher herself, she kept that old notebook with the red 68 in her desk drawer. She did
not talk about it often. But when a student sat in her classroom after school, staring at a low score, she would sit down and
say,“Let's look at this one together:”

Coral reefs cover only a small part of the seafloor, but they are the ocean's most diverse ecosystem, home to at least a
quarter of all marine species. They also offer great value to humans, such as coastal protection, tourism and fishing. However,
by the late 20th century, overfishing, pollution, disease and physical damage had reduced coral cover to half of its past level.
Today, this crisis is worsened by ocean warming. Some scientists warn that reefs have already crossed a global"tipping point",
leading to an unchangeable situation where most warm-water corals may disappear.
Central to this alarm is the metric(指标)of Degree Heating Weeks(DHW),which calculates thermal stress(热应力)
by measuring the intensity and duration of marine heatwaves.Predictions based on this metric suggest that reefs could face
annual, deadly levels of thermal stress by the end of this century, leaving no time for recovery.
However, new research challenges this view. The DHW metric assumes corals cannot adapt to rising temperatures. In
fact, evidence shows corals now survive thermal stress levels that were disastrous 50 years ago.Using ecological models that
consider how corals evolve, scientists suggest that if global warming is limited to 2C-the goal of the paris Agreement-
reefs could begin recovering in the second half of this century. In this case, hope remains,as long as the worst warming
situations are avoided.
To help reefs survive, practical steps can be taken.Locally, minimizing human-caused stressors proves effective. For
example, limiting fishing equipment protects fish that control harmful water plants, while reducing land-based pollution helps
reefs recover from damage. Also, new technologies like assisted evolution may improve coral protection, though scaling them
up remains hard. These local and technological efforts serve to buy time for the final solution.Ultimately, the science is clear:
the only sustainable way to save the planet's most extraordinary ecosystem is to reach net-zero emissions. And the faster we
get there, the better chance we have of saving our coral reefs.
8.What causes the recent worsening situation of coral reefs?

Returning to a book you've read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There's a welcome familiarity, but
also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don't change, people
do.And that's what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.
The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It's true,
the older I get,the more I feel time has wings. But with reading,it's all about the present. It's about the now and what one
contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.
There are three books I reread annually.The first,which I take to reading every spring,is Ernest Hemingway's 4
Moveable Feast.Published in 1964,it's his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating
)an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time.Another is Annie Dillard's Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975
ramble (about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortazar's Save Tivilight:Selected poens,as if a bottle
of wine remaining more and more mellow as time flows.
While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to the meaning I attach to
them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author's work is the highest currency
a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember,it's you that have to grow
and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.
12.What does the author imply in the first paragraph?
A.Drinking with old friends is quite beneficial.
B.Either books or us are changeable along with time.
C.It is recommended to read one book over and over again.
D.Rereading requires a large amount of time and money.
13.What do you know about Hemingway's A Moveable Feast?
A.It's a brief account of a trip.
B.It's about Hemingway's life as a young man.
C.It's a record of a historic event.
D.It's about Hemingway's friends in Paris.
14.How do you understand"rereading an author's work is the highest currency a reader can pay them"in the last
paragraph?
A.Rereading can help readers pay their debts.
B.Rereading will bring satisfaction to authors.
C.The more one reads, the richer he will be.
D.Readers should pay money to reread books.
15.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Three Masterpieces I Reread Annually
B.Effective Approaches to Rereading Books
C.Author and Reader Pull Their Own Weight
D.Rereading Does Matter to Personal Growth

Once a year in a small mountain village, the Mande people gather to hear the folk stories of their traditions. The man
playing an instrument called Sosso-Bala while singing is the storyteller.Heholds all the folk knowledge of the Mande people.
Most of us don't have a musical instrument that ties us together, but we have someone in our lives who's the keeper of
our folk knowledge.Often it's a grandmother, who keeps all our stories of wisdom ready to tell upon request.

16.What's the best way to get a baby to sleep?Where do I come from? What's my moral compass? The stories provide
an answer, and it's useful to speak with someone who knows how things are done.
17 Researchers have documented folk knowledge in other species whales returning to parts of the sea that
they'd abandoned a generation before;monkeys that communicate hunting skills to their offspring.Folk knowledge is not
only culture,it's also survival.18
Traditionally,we share it in small units-families sharing around a dinner table.19 Look at any social median,
and you'll see folk knowledge at work and at play. It's exploded as we're trained to look for information online, rather than
from within. In this case, chances are that our questions can be answered with misinformation.
But we don't gather once a year to reality check our"folk stories"as the Mande people do,nor do we center our folk
traditions around a musical instrument. The internet has no reality except its own and, left unchecked, its wisdom has no
rhythm.20
A.It's just chaos.
B.This is why we do it.
C.Human wisdom has been passed down through generations.
D.The stories can be useful for dealing with all sorts of doubts
E.Nowadays, folk knowledge has expanded to digital networks
F.Now the internet has made valuable folk wisdom at your fingertips.
G.Recently,we discovered that this very human practice isn't limited to humans

On the afternoon of my eighteenth birthday,I was driving my dad's old car around town for the first time, feeling free
and excited. The sun was shining brightly and everything seemed perfect. As I made a turn too quickly, something terrible
happened.A loud, sharp sound of metal scraping against metal broke the silence, making my heart jump into my throat.
I had accidentally hit a car parked by the pavement.
I cut the engine,my hands shaking.I looked around nervously.The street was completely empty,not a soul in sight.A
thought rushed into my head:"Just drive away.No one will ever know."The car I hit was brand-new,and the scratch (
along its door was long and deep.Panic seized me as I thought about the money I'd saved for months for my first semester
college textbooks, which would be wiped out by this repair. The desire to escape was overwhelming.
But then,I pictured my dad's serious face.He always taught me that taking responsibility for my actions was what
defined a person. With a heavy heart,I pulled over behind the car.Digging out a notebook and a pen from my backpack,I
wrote down my name, phone number, address and a sincere apology. My hands shook so violently that my handwriting turned
