Being busy often seems important in today’s world. Full calendars, nonstop notifications (消息提醒), and long to-do lists make it feel like progress is always happening. However, many people end their days very tired and wonder why their big goals are still far away. The truth is that being busy is different from being effective: One fills time and the other creates results. Understanding the difference is important because it helps you control your attention, make smarter choices, and focus on what truly matters.
Busyness gives a false sense of achievement because it fills time with activity. Answering emails, attending meetings, and checking off small tasks create the illusion (幻觉) of progress. However, activities of this kind often have no real purpose and fail to move important goals forward. What’s more, busy people often let outside tasks take over their time. As a result, they have little control over time, which leads to stress and little progress.
Effectiveness, however, is measured (衡量) by results, not activity. Rather than ask how much was done, effective people ask what was achieved. They prioritise (优先考虑) tasks that create meaningful change, even if those tasks require more focus and more effort. For example, they decide ahead of time what is worth their energy and then prioritise their time for important work. This planned method reduces unnecessary tasks and creates space for deep, focused effort.
The real cost of busyness lies not in time spent, but in progress lost. Being busy often hides the fact that little of real value is being achieved. Effective people, on the other hand, often take a break from their work to check if they are keeping to their goals. When you stop measuring your days by how full they are and start measuring them by what truly moves you forward, work becomes more purposeful and life feels more satisfying.
34. Why is it important to understand the difference between being busy and being effective?
___________________________________________________________
35. What is the result when busy people let outside tasks take over their time?

36. It reduces unnecessary tasks and creates space for deep, focused effort.
37. I plan to make a daily to-do list and rank tasks by importance. First, it helps me focus on key tasks instead of wasting time on easy but unimportant tasks. Second, it allows me to set aside quiet time for deep-learning, which improves my understanding and reduces last-minute stress.
Passage 1
The Earth is becoming hotter, and this situation worries scientists a lot. The past three years have been the warmest ever recorded. This is not a natural change. It is mainly caused by human activities. People burn fossil fuels such as coal and oil for energy, transportation and daily use, which produces harmful gases.
These gases keep heat in the Earth’s atmosphere() and raise the global temperature. As a result, extreme (极端的) weather happens more often. Some places suffer from extreme heat waves, while others face serious floods and landslides. These dangerous weather events are no longer rare and have become common around the world.
Some people doubt the truth of climate change, but scientists have proved it is real and dangerous. If we take no action now, the situation will become much worse. Luckily, it is still possible for humans to fix the problem. Many countries are turning to clean energy like solar and wind power.
Thanks to the development of clean energy, the future warming prediction has dropped greatly. Though the risk still exists, human efforts are truly helpful. China plays an important role in this positive change. It has made huge investments in renewable energy and becomes the world’s top producer of solar panels, wind turbines and electric car batteries.
Chinese technology also brings great progress. For example, BYD has developed fast-charging electric cars that work well even in cold weather. China’s electric high-speed trains also set new speed records.
Global warming brings serious problems to our planet. However, we have advanced technology to deal with it. With the lead of countries like China, clean energy is widely used. To avoid a hotter and more dangerous future, people all over the world should work together and use more clean energy.
1. Why is our Earth becoming hotter according to the passage?
2. What will happen if we do nothing about climate change?
3. How does China make contributions to fighting global warming?
4. What will you do to help slow down global warming? Why? (Please give two reasons.)
Passage 2
For a long time, people used GDP( 国内生产总值) to judge a country’s success. GDP shows how much money a country earns from producing goods and offering services. Higher GDP was seen as a sign of better development. However, this standard has a big shortcoming. It only focuses on economic growth but ignores environmental damage.
In 2013, China put forward a new development idea: lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets. It means protecting the environment is as important as making money. In the past ten years, China has actively carried out this idea. From 2021 to 2025, China’s economy kept growing, while pollution and carbon emissions (碳排放) decreased. This proves that economic development and environmental protection can go hand in hand.
To keep this progress, the Chinese government changed its evaluation(评价) rules for local officials. In the past, officials mainly got praise for fast economic growth. Now, their performance also depends on environmental protection and carbon reduction. Good work brings rewards, while poor performance leads to punishment. This makes green development a key official task.
This change fits the global “Beyond GDP” idea. The United Nations now believes a country’s success should include people’s happiness, social fairness and planetary (星球的) health, not just economic income. China is one of the earliest countries to turn this idea into official rules.
Different from Western countries’ old way of “polluting first, cleaning later”, China develops the economy and cuts pollution at the same time. It leads the world in green technology. In 2025, China exported huge amounts of electric vehicles(交通工具), solar panels and batteries. This fully shows environmental protection can also create jobs and wealth.
In short, true national success means balanced development of economy, society and nature. By changing the way of measuring progress, China is proving to the world that green development is real and valuable progress.
1. Why is GDP not a perfect standard to judge a country’s success?
2. What change has taken place in China’s evaluation rules for local officials?
3. How does China put the idea of green development into practice differently from Western old ways?
4. What do you think is true national success? Why? (Please give two reasons.)
Passage 3
Chengdu is widely known for its spicy hotpot, but it also has many popular Tibetan (藏族的) restaurants. Loved by locals and tourists, these special restaurants show beautiful cultural mixing through delicious food.
A Rig is one of the most famous Tibetan restaurants in the city. Its owner A Rig moved to Chengdu from a Tibetan area and opened the restaurant in 2000. At first, it only served traditional Tibetan food for Tibetan people living in Chengdu. Later, she changed her menu to suit more people’s tastes.
The restaurant’s most popular dish is stir-fried yak (炒牦牛肉) with flatbread. The owner learned a recipe from Qinghai and replaced mutton with yak meat. She also used fewer strong spices to make the taste fresher. After three years of improvement, the dish became extremely popular and is now copied by many other local Tibetan restaurants. Thanks to these changes, A Rig’s restaurant tops the list of Chengdu’s Tibetan restaurants on food apps.
In fact, Tibetan food is becoming more and more common in Chengdu. There are now 84 Tibetan restaurants in the city. More Tibetans move here for work and bring their traditional culture, and more tourists also come to try new and special local food.
Besides offering tasty food, A Rig’s restaurant also helps people in need. It provides jobs for people from poor Tibetan areas. Many workers improved a lot there. They learned Mandarin and even some English, gaining useful skills for their future life and work.
In short, Tibetan restaurants in Chengdu are wonderful examples of cultural exchange. They improve traditional food to suit modern tastes, bring different cultures closer, and support the local Tibetan community.
1. Why do Tibetan restaurants in Chengdu win love from locals and tourists?
2. When and where did A Rig open her Tibetan restaurant?
3. What changes did A Rig make to the stir‑fried yak with flatbread dish?
4. What do you think of Tibetan restaurants in Chengdu as examples of cultural exchange? (Please give two reasons.)
Passage 4
Gao Yi is not just a guitar player; he is a guitar creator. Although he is already one of China’s best classical guitarists, he is now famous worldwide for making beautiful, handmade guitars. Two years ago, he won first prize in a big competition in Spain(西班牙). This was a huge achievement because he was the first Chinese person ever to win this award.
Gao’s journey to becoming a master luthier (首席制琴师) was full of surprises. Born in Shandong in 1970, he loved music from a young age. He played the bamboo flute as a child and taught himself guitar as a teenager. After studying music in college, he went to Beijing to learn more about the classical guitar. There, he saw amazing Spanish-style guitars for the first time.
In 2000, Gao got a job with the famous Yamaha company in Shanghai. He worked there for eight years, learning everything about how guitars are built. However, his life changed in 2010. While trying to fix a guitar, a terrible accident hurt his fingers badly. Many people might have given up, but Gao did not. Instead, he decided to focus completely on making guitars rather than just playing them. He said, "The accident didn't stop me; it pushed me to work harder."
To become better, Gao traveled to Spain to learn from the masters. He studied under famous teachers like Juan Labella and even met the legendary Antonio Marin Montero. The Spanish masters welcomed him warmly, sharing their secrets and tools. Gao realized that making a guitar is more than just building an instrument; it is about culture, history, and life itself.
Today, Gao Yi’s guitars are sold in Japan and loved by musicians everywhere. From a boy playing the flute in Shandong to a world-famous guitar maker, Gao Yi’s story teaches us that sometimes, an injury can lead to a new and wonderful beginning. He didn't just build a guitar; he built a bridge between cultures.
