Being busy often seems important in today’s world. Full calendars, nonstop notifications (消息提醒), and long to-do lists make it feel like progress is always happening. However, many people end their days very tired and wonder why their big goals are still far away. The truth is that being busy is different from being effective: One fills time and the other creates results. Understanding the difference is important because it helps you control your attention, make smarter choices, and focus on what truly matters.
Busyness gives a false sense of achievement because it fills time with activity. Answering emails, attending meetings, and checking off small tasks create the illusion (幻觉) of progress. However, activities of this kind often have no real purpose and fail to move important goals forward. What’s more, busy people often let outside tasks take over their time. As a result, they have little control over time, which leads to stress and little progress.
Effectiveness, however, is measured (衡量) by results, not activity. Rather than ask how much was done, effective people ask what was achieved. They prioritise (优先考虑) tasks that create meaningful change, even if those tasks require more focus and more effort. For example, they decide ahead of time what is worth their energy and then prioritise their time for important work. This planned method reduces unnecessary tasks and creates space for deep, focused effort.
The real cost of busyness lies not in time spent, but in progress lost. Being busy often hides the fact that little of real value is being achieved. Effective people, on the other hand, often take a break from their work to check if they are keeping to their goals. When you stop measuring your days by how full they are and start measuring them by what truly moves you forward, work becomes more purposeful and life feels more satisfying.
34. Why is it important to understand the difference between being busy and being effective?

Passage 1
Zhang Qian is a devoted courier (快递员) serving remote mountain villages in Hubei. For over ten years, he has stuck to his post, delivering parcels (包裹递送) on rough mountain roads. His hard work connects remote mountain areas with the outside world and greatly improves local villagers’ lives.
Zhang’s daily work is extremely tough. He gets up early every morning to collect parcels. The mountain roads are foggy, steep and dangerous. On cold winter days, icy roads make his trip harder, and he has to use anti-slip chains (防滑链条) on his car. His service covers five scattered (分散的) villages over 200 square kilometers. For places cars cannot reach, he walks on foot to send parcels door to door.
Zhang started his courier career in 2015 by chance. Growing up in a mountain village with no delivery service, he once faced great trouble receiving home deliveries. He realized local villagers badly needed convenient parcel services. So he gave up other jobs and started a small courier station in his hometown. In the early days, he met many difficulties, but he never gave up.
Thanks to his efforts, rural delivery service has developed rapidly. The number of parcels keeps rising every year. His small station now deals with about 2,000 parcels daily. It forms a two-way connection: he brings daily goods, medicine and furniture into mountains, and helps villagers sell local special products to outside markets.
Zhang has won the honor of China’s Top 10 Couriers for his dedication, but he stays modest and thinks he only does his duty. He will keep serving his hometown quietly with this ordinary but meaningful job.

Passage 2
People often look in mirrors to tidy up their appearance every day. But in ancient China, Emperor Taizong taught us that the most important mirrors are not for our faces, but for our hearts and actions. He told people there are three valuable mirrors: history helps us learn from the rise and fall of countries, and other people help us judge our own behavior. Besides these, self-reflection (反省) is a fourth mirror that many people ignore.
It is common for people to judge others’ mistakes in daily life and online. However, few people are willing to check their own problems. Psychologists (心理学家) say this is human nature. We usually take pride in our success by relying on our own ability, but we blame bad luck for our failures. We always accept opinions that support us and ignore our own weaknesses, which makes self-improvement hard.
Without self-reflection, people will repeat the same mistakes. Bad decisions may cause failures in work, study and relationships. Only looking at others’ faults stops us from growing and becoming better.
Traditional Chinese culture values self-examination deeply. As Lao Tzu put it, knowing others is intelligence, while knowing yourself is true wisdom. This old saying is still useful today. Many modern companies even check possible weaknesses of their projects in advance to avoid mistakes.
Self-reflection is never easy. It requires us to face our mistakes honestly. But it is the only way for long-term growth. A common mirror can only tidy up our looks, but regarding ourselves as a mirror can help us correct our faults and improve our lives. In the busy modern world, stopping to look inward is truly a wise choice for everyone.
1. Why is self-reflection considered a valuable mirror for people?
___________________________________________________________
2. What is the result if people never reflect on themselves?

How do modern companies make use of self-reflection?

4. What can people gain from self-reflection? Why? (Please give two reasons.)

Passage 3
Social media is very popular in our daily life. However, many online platforms are full of negative content. Lots of people argue about politics, complain about life or even use rude words online. When people discuss serious topics like environmental protection, their talks often turn into unfriendly fights. Many users easily forget to be polite and kind on the Internet.
Still, social media does not have to be an angry place. It can spread warmth, humor and friendship. We can change the online atmosphere (氛围) by staying positive. Instead of arguing with others, we can share interesting little things in daily life. For example, a funny post about European dogs having public toilets made many users laugh and interact with each other in a friendly way.
Humor is a great way to connect with people online. Funny pictures and interesting thoughts help people relax and escape from daily stress. On some social platforms, users can only write short posts. This encourages people to be creative and express meaningful ideas briefly(简略地).
Apart from sharing humor, we should also stick to the truth online. Some people spread false information and biased (有偏见的) opinions on the Internet. When this happens, we should correct mistakes politely with real facts and solid evidence (实证). For example, we can share real historical materials to clarify wrong ideas. This is not fighting, but guiding others to know the truth.
In fact, social media is a mirror of society. It shows people’s anger and division, but it can also show kindness and honesty. The online environment depends on every user. We can choose to stop spreading negativity and try our best to make the online world a friendlier and smarter place for everyone.
1. Why do many social media platforms become negative places nowadays?
___________________________________________________________
2. What positive influence can humor bring to the online world?
___________________________________________________________
3. How should people deal with false information and biased opinions online?
___________________________________________________________
4. What kind of online environment should we create? Why? (Please give two reasons.)

Passage 4
Traditional Chinese opera is a special art form. It includes beautiful singing, acting, colorful costumes, special makeup and unique body movements. It has been popular for hundreds of years. However, this traditional art now faces a challenge: how to attract young people and fit into modern society.
In the past, people protected opera by keeping it completely unchanged. They recorded old songs and taught traditional skills carefully. This way saves old traditions, but it also makes opera feel outdated (过时的). It looks like a museum piece, respectful but not exciting enough for modern people.
Today, artists and designers are using creative design to bring opera back to life. They take traditional opera’s bright colors, classic patterns and special movements, and apply them to modern fashion, games, advertisements and animations.
A great example is a project from the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (北京服装学院). Students did not just perform old plays. They studied the meanings of opera’s colors and costume shapes, then created modern art and daily designs. These works appear in museums, shopping malls and city streets.
This method helps traditional opera in two ways. First, it steps out of theaters and becomes part of modern city life. Second, it uses simple and creative designs instead of ancient difficult language, so more people can understand and love it. Besides, it helps spread Chinese culture worldwide. Foreigners may not understand old opera stories, but they can easily enjoy its beautiful designs and styles.
Protecting tradition does not mean keeping it fixed. With modern design, Chinese opera gains new energy. It is no longer only an old art, but a living and growing culture that inspires new generations.
1. Why does traditional Chinese opera fail to attract modern young people in the past?
___________________________________________________________
2. What is the result of using modern design to improve traditional opera?
___________________________________________________________
3. How do students in Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology help develop opera culture?
___________________________________________________________
4. Why is modern design helpful to traditional Chinese opera? (Please give two reasons.)

Passage 5
These days, an interesting change is taking place in Chinese cinemas. People used to believe that successful movies must have huge budgets, famous directors and big stars. However, low-budget works by unknown creators are now winning great popularity, while some expensive big-budget films fail to satisfy audiences.
There are many good examples. The movie Dear You was made with only 14 million yuan but earned over 1.6 billion yuan at the box office. The online short drama Enemy also became a big hit without famous actors. On the contrary, several high-cost movies directed by famous people got low scores and even lost money.
The key reason for this change lies in the story and true emotions. Many big-budget films simply copy Hollywood styles and focus too much on cool special effects and exciting action scenes. However, they ignore real stories and fail to show true Chinese culture and feelings, so they feel fake to local audiences.
In comparison (相比之下), small-budget films prefer real life and sincere emotions. Dear You comes from true stories of overseas Chinese families. The director spent three years interviewing over 120 elders to make the story real and touching. It shows common feelings like family love and homesickness, which are easy for everyone to understand.
Besides, today’s young audience is smart enough to tell whether a movie is made with true care or just for money. They are tired of empty, fancy (太花哨的) films and welcome down-to-earth, personal stories.
The success of these movies teaches the film industry a valuable lesson: a high budget cannot guarantee (担保) a good movie. Only sincere, real Chinese stories can truly touch audiences and light up the future of local cinema.
1. Why do many big-budget movies fail to satisfy Chinese audiences?
___________________________________________________________
2. What result does the new movie trend bring to the film industry?
___________________________________________________________
3. How does the movie Dear You win the audience’s hearts?
___________________________________________________________
4. What kind of movies are popular with young audiences now? Why? (Please give two reasons.)
