W: How did things turn out?
M: I had to manage the cooks and handle daily operations. But my journalism training helped me market the restaurant.
W: That’s impressive. And now, 10 years later, how do you feel?
M: I couldn’t be happier. I still honor my youthful dream through my successful food blog, which actually draws customers from all over the world to our restaurant.

A. Create works on silk. B. Paint on pottery pieces. C. Instruct Australian artists.
20. What is the speaker mainly talking about?
A. His efforts to boost cultural exchanges.
B. His exploration of traditional Chinese art.
C. His travel experiences in China and Australia.
A 18. C 19. B 20. B
M: I’m David Reid. I’ve loved traditional Chinese ink art since 1985. That year, I saw ink paintings on paper at a China-Australia art exhibition. But back then, rice paper would cost an arm and a leg in Australia. I couldn’t try painting on it much until 2005. That year, I went to China to join the Shanghai Art Fair. I loved the city and decided to live there. In 2018, I moved to Jingdezhen. I made art. It was a place where the clay, the people, and the slow rhythm of life all came together to make me feel at home — warm, familiar, and full of a sense of belonging. At first, working with clay was hard. If you make a mistake on paper, you can use a new one — but not with clay. After practicing again and again, I finally got the hang of it. Now I can paint smoothly on blue-and-white pottery pieces without following a pattern, and many people love these works. I’m also planning to paint on Chinese silk. I want to help Chinese and Australian artists learn from each other. I’m happy to be a bridge between our two cultures in the future.

How to Read Codes on Canned Foods
While there is no standard marking system for canned foods, many companies use similar codes to track their products. Learning to understand the most common date codes helps you make sure your canned foods stay fresh and safe to eat. Some canned foods have a clear “use by” date printed on the can or its label. For those without such a date, you can usually find a coded date on the top or bottom of the can and decode it as follows.
Step 1 — Check the first character
Check the first number or letter in the code. Numbers 1 to 9 often stand for the months from January to September in order. On many cans, the letter O usually means October, N stands for November, and D represents December.
Step 2 — Try the alphabetical system
Simply match letters A to L with the months January through December in alphabetical order. Some companies use this way of coding to mark months. You need to be careful when decoding these marks if you want to confirm the exact month. D may mean April or December, depending on the coding system the producer uses.
Step 3 — Read the day and year
Work out the numbers to find the specific date and year. Many companies use two digits after the first character in the code for the day, and one digit for the year. The digit for the year is normally the last digit of that year. For example, the year mark for 2011 would be 1.
Step 4 — Try a Julian date
Find the corresponding (相应的) Julian date from the code if the numbers cannot be read as month, day and year. A Julian date shows which day it is in a whole year. For example, Jan. 1 would be 1 and Dec. 31 would be 365 if a Julian date is used.
21. What do we know about the coding systems in Step 1 and Step 2?
A. They use numbers for days. B. Months are coded randomly.
C. Letters are used to mark months. D. They follow the same coding rules.
22. What number represents Feb. 10 if a Julian date is used?
A. 10. B. 41. C. 102. D. 210.
23. Which section of a magazine is this text probably taken from?
A. Everyday Health. B. Green Life.
C. Money Smart. D. Home Improvement.
C 22. B 23. A
Step 1 — Check the first character中的“Numbers 1 to 9 often stand for the months from January to September in order. On many cans, the letter O usually means October, N stands for November, and D represents December.(数字 1 到 9 通常依次代表一月至九月。在很多罐头上面,字母 O 通常代表十月,N 代表十一月,D 代表十二月。)”以及Step 2 — Try the alphabetical system中的“Simply match letters A to L with the months January through December in alphabetical order. Some companies use this way of coding to mark months.(简单地将字母 A 到 L 按照字母顺序对应一月到十二月。一些公司使用这种编码方式标记月份。)”可知,步骤一和步骤二均会使用字母来标记月份。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据Step 4中的“Find the corresponding Julian date from the code if the numbers cannot be read as month, day and year. A Julian date shows which day it is in a whole year. For example, Jan. 1 would be 1 and Dec. 31 would be 365 if a Julian date is used.(如果数字不能读取为月、日和年,请从代码中查找相应的儒略日期。

14-year-old Philo Farnsworth wasn’t looking up at the sky while plowing(犁) the field at his father’s farm. He was looking down at the straight furrows(沟) that coursed over the earth. That’s when he had a sudden insight: The same way the plow went back and forth over the field, an image could be scanned electronically and then transmitted(传输) line by line, much like furrows in a field. It was a vision of the first transmittable TV image.
Born in 1906 in a small apartment, he grew up in a family that moved constantly. His formal education was often interrupted, but he had something that couldn’t be taught in any classroom: an almost supernatural ability to see how things worked. By age 12, he had built an electric motor from scratch. At 13, he was repairing neighbors’ radios and electric appliances for pocket money. His teachers quickly realized they were dealing with something extraordinary.
He briefly attended college, but his mind was on television, and so he dropped out and began looking for somebody to fund his ideas. That opportunity came, and he traveled to Berkeley, California, to set up shop. The TV tube Philo then developed would become the standard in broadcasting. Yet Philo spent years defending his patent and rebuilding his business after an economic crash. Like all of us, he had his share of challenges, perhaps more. But he kept pushing forward and registered hundreds of patents. Finally, on July 21, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped out of Apollo 11 onto the moon’s surface in an area called the Sea of Tranquility.
Philo Farnsworth was sitting in his living room with his wife Pem, watching the live feed—the image transmitting quickly, row by row like the furrows in a field. He turned to her and said: “Pem, this has made it all worthwhile.”
24. What was inspired by the furrows in the field?
A. A type of farming equipment. B. A way of high production.
C. A model of a transmitter. D. A method of image transmission.
25. What aspect about Philo amazed his teachers?
A. His devotion to science. B. His genius in engineering.
C. His expertise in finance. D. His popularity in the neighborhood.
26. Which of the following best summarizes Philo’s life in the 3rd paragraph?
A. A hard-won victory over adversities.
B. A struggle against financial setbacks.
C. A leap from college dropout to celebrity.
D. A lifelong pursuit of academic excellence.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?
A. From Farm Boy to Wealthy Inventor B. Bring the Moon to Your Living Room
C. The Vision That Was Born on the Moon D. The Dropout Who Challenged the World
D 25. B 26. A 27. B
根据第一段中“That’s when he had a sudden insight: The same way the plow went back and forth over the field, an image could be scanned electronically and then transmitted line by line, much like furrows in a field. It was a vision of the first transmittable (传输)TV image.(就在那时,他有了一个突然的领悟:就像犁在田地里来回耕作一样,图像可以通过电子扫描,然后逐行传输,就像田地里的田垄一样。这是对第一个可传输的电视图像的构想)”可知,田地里的田垄启发了图像传输的方法。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“By age 12, he had built an electric motor from scratch. At 13, he was repairing neighbors’ radios and electric appliances for pocket money. His teachers quickly realized they were dealing with something extraordinary.(12岁时,他就从零开始制造了一台电动机。13岁时,他开始为邻居修理收音机和电器来赚零花钱。他的老师们很快意识到,他们面对的是一个非凡的人。)”可知,Philo在工程方面的天赋让老师们感到惊讶。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Yet Philo spent years defending his patent and rebuilding his business after an economic crash. Like all of us, he had his share of challenges, perhaps more. But he kept pushing forward and registered hundreds of patents.(然而,在一次经济崩溃后,Philo花了数年时间维护自己的专利并重建自己的企业。像我们所有人一样,他也面临过种种挑战,或许更多。但他不断前进,注册了数百项专利)”可知,Philo的生活充满了挑战,但他始终坚持前行,最终取得了成功,可推理出这体现了他在逆境中来之不易的胜利。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段中“Finally, on July 21, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped out of Apollo 11 onto the moon’s surface in an area called the Sea of Tranquility.(最终,1969年7月21日,尼尔·阿姆斯特朗从阿波罗11号飞船踏上月球表面,降落在一个名为宁静海的地方)”以及最后一段中“Philo Farnsworth was sitting in his living room with his wife Pem, watching the live feed—the image transmitting quickly, row by row like the furrows in a field.(Philo Farnsworth和妻子Pem坐在客厅里,观看现场直播——图像一行接一行地快速传输,就像田地里的田垄一样)”可知,文章最后提到Philo在自己的客厅里通过自己发明的图像传输技术,观看到了登月的实时画面,B项“Bring the Moon to Your Living Room(把月亮带进客厅)”形象地概括了这一情节,同时也体现了他发明的电视技术的重大意义,最适合作为文章标题。
C
What can novelists learn from non-fiction? The greatest imagination is often fired with the depth of material that research offers. Sure, you can imagine anything, but readers will not necessarily believe anything. Truth doesn’t have to be true, but it does have to be credible (We’ve all read something unrealistic that the author insists “really happened!”).
I’ve written a few historical novels, including a series based in early Victorian London. That kind of fiction requires a lot of research just at the level of what people wear, eat and how they live their lives. Then you need location details: buildings, streets, smells, sounds, etc. It looks laborious but it’s almost as much fun as the actual writing. I spent months reading books and newspapers produced in the 1840s. The novel’s plot would be mine, but everything it rested on was pure historical research.
Anthony Burgess was once waiting to meet his publisher in London and decided to leaf through a pile of the newest bestselling thrillers on the reception’s coffee table. He noted that each book was based on a specific subject area — avalanches (雪崩), oil-drilling work — and understood that readers don’t just want a story. They also want to learn something about an unknown subject. They want fiction and non-fiction combined.
I’ve also written history. I already knew about the history of the Greek town I’d decided to focus on, but I wanted to make it appealing to the general reader using the techniques I’d used in fiction.
The result was mostly an experiment in structure. I decided to tell the history in a non-chronological (非按时间顺序的) way, focusing instead on themes that would allow me to group different and individual stories in ways that would hold together like chapters in fiction. The whole history would be told eventually, but it would come together gradually like a plot rather than “in order” as it happened. As such, it appeared to be almost like a novel, though everything in it is history.
28. What quality should a novel carry according to paragraph 1?
A. Readability. B. Reliability. C. Authenticity. D. Originality.
29. What did the research into Victorian London serve to ensure?
A. Visual presentation. B. Identity exploration.
C. Theme relevance. D. Historical accuracy.
30. What do readers expect from a book according to Anthony Burgess?
A. Novel content. B. Varied settings.
C. Thrilling elements. D. Immersive experience.
31. How did the author tell the history of the Greek town?
A. By following the timeline.
B. By respecting historical events.
C. By combining facts and fantasy.
D. By adopting a fictional organization.
B 29. D 30. A 31. D
根据第一段“Sure, you can imagine anything, but readers will not necessarily believe anything. Truth doesn’t have to be true, but it does have to be credible (We’ve all read something unrealistic that the author insists ‘really happened!’).(诚然,你可以想象任何事物,但读者未必会相信所有内容。事实不必完全真实,但必须具备可信度(我们都读过一些脱离现实的内容,而作者却坚称这‘确有其事!’)。)”可知,小说应当具备可信的特质。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“That kind of fiction requires a lot of research just at the level of what people wear, eat and how they live their lives. Then you need location details: buildings, streets, smells, sounds, etc.(这类小说需要大量研究,涉及人们的穿着、饮食以及生活方式,还需要地点细节:建筑、街道、气味、声音等等。)”以及“The novel’s plot would be mine, but everything it rested on was pure historical research.(小说情节是作者原创,但支撑小说的一切都来自纯粹的历史研究。)”
根据第三段“He noted that each book was based on a specific subject area — avalanches (雪崩), oil‑drilling work — and understood that readers don’t just want a story. They also want to learn something about an unknown subject. They want fiction and non‑fiction combined.(他注意到每本书都围绕某一特定主题展开——雪崩、石油钻探工作——并且意识到读者不只是想看一个故事。他们也希望了解一些陌生领域的知识。他们期待虚构与非虚构内容融为一体。)”可知,读者期待兼具故事性与新知的新颖内容。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“I decided to tell the history in a non‑chronological (时间顺序的) way, focusing instead on themes that would allow me to group different and individual stories in ways that would hold together like chapters in fiction.(我决定不按照时间顺序来讲述这段历史,转而围绕各类主题,把一个个独立各异的故事整合在一起,使其衔接连贯,如同小说的各个章节。)”以及“As such, it appeared to be almost like a novel, though everything in it is history.(如此一来,这本书读起来几乎就像一部小说,然而书中所有内容均为史实。)”
D
Botanists have known that plants can communicate via chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). When plants are attacked by pests, the composition of the VOCs they release changes. Previous work has shown that this drives nearby plants to raise their own defences in anticipation of being attacked in turn. What has gone unexplored is whether plants detect VOCs released by their neighbours when they are healthy. So ecologist Velemir Ninkovic decided to run an experiment.
Dr. Ninkovic and his colleagues planted three varieties of barley (大麦) that grow at different rates — one quick, one slow, and one middling. The plants were put in growing containers next to one another, but with no way for them to shade their neighbours. The only connection that the plants had to one another was through one-way air channels that connected their growing containers. These allowed the researchers to blow air from one container to the next, and to monitor the effect that this had on the plants over 25 days.
The results were striking. The slow-growing barley grew more quickly when it was exposed to air from the containers of its fast-growing cousins, producing 20% more biomass than when it was placed next to slower-growing plants. This, Dr. Ninkovic believes, is because the slow-growing plants were detecting the compounds released by their neighbours and realising that, in the wild at least, they would be at risk of getting shaded out if they did not get a shift on.
Fast-growing plants exposed to air from the containers of their slow-growing cousins reacted in the opposite way. With less need to race for the sun, they cut their growth rates notably. While the slow growers were switching resources towards growth, the speedsters were able to spend more of theirs on resource-intensive defensive measures.
Barley, in other words, can chemically detect their competitors, and adjust their own growing strategies accordingly. Farmers are already experimenting with using VOCs to boost productivity. Dr. Ninkovic’s results suggest VOCs could be used to stimulate protective compounds when pests are expected, or to accelerate growth when risk is low.
32. What role did the one-way air channels play in the experiment?
A. They allowed sharing nutrients. B. They helped defend against pests.
C. They regulated experiment conditions. D. They prevented plants’ overshadowing.
33. What does the underlined phrase “get a shift on” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Give in. B. Speed up. C. Move away. D. Watch out.
34. What happened to the fast-growing barley when exposed to air from its rivals?
A. They invested more in self-protection.
B. They stopped growing to avoid competition.
C. They grew faster to maintain their advantage.
D. They released more VOCs to warn their rivals.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. The role of VOCs in plant defense.
B. Why plants grow at different rates.
C. How plants keep spying on the competition.
D. The benefits of planting crops in different places.
C 33. B 34. A 35. C
根据第二段中“The only connection that the plants had to one another was through one-way air channels that connected their growing containers. These allowed the researchers to blow air from one container to the next, and to monitor the effect that this had on the plants over 25 days. (植株之间唯一的联系是通过连接种植容器的单向空气通道。研究人员可以通过这些通道将空气从一个容器吹到另一个容器,并在25天的时间里监测这对植株产生的影响。)”可知,单向空气通道用于控制实验环境,实现气体传递,方便科研人员开展实验、监测实验效果。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“The slow-growing barley grew more quickly when it was exposed to air from the containers of its fast-growing cousins, producing 20% more biomass than when it was placed next to slower-growing plants. This, Dr. Ninkovic believes, is because the slow-growing plants were detecting the compounds released by their neighbours and realising that, in the wild at least, they would be at risk of getting shaded out if they did not get a shift on.
根据第四段中“While the slow growers were switching resources towards growth, the speedsters were able to spend more of theirs on resource‑intensive defensive measures. (当生长缓慢的植株把资源转向生长时,这些生长迅速的植株就能够把更多资源投入到耗费大量资源的防御机制上。)”可知,接触到慢生大麦释放气体的快生大麦会将更多资源用于自我保护。
【35题详解】

【39题详解】
空格前“Glass floors invited guests to peer into the mysterious depths below, and private pools offered moments of pure relaxation.(玻璃地板邀请宾客俯瞰下方神秘的深邃空间,私人泳池则带来纯粹放松的时光)”列举了玻璃地板、私人泳池等创新设计,说明度假村在建筑设计上不断追求更高品质的体验。G项“Each wonder in architecture proved the pursuit of perfection(建筑中的每一处奇迹都证明了对完美的追求)”总结这些建筑奇迹体现了对完美的追求,符合本段主旨。

For two years, I had waited for my father to come home after a car accident. Dad worked as a mail carrier, rising before dawn and returning at dusk enthusiastically. On weekends, he coached a Little League team, patiently teaching kids how to hold a bat and position their feet. He would often show them how to swing hard to hit the ball, then dash around the bases to score. He used to say, “Baseball never gives up on you, and you shouldn’t give up on it either.”
The accident happened on a rainy evening. He survived, but his right arm was crushed beyond repair. When he got home from hospital, he often sat on his bed, staring out the window and barely speaking. If I mentioned baseball, he would wave me off.
One evening, I lay reading the sports page. Sunday was my birthday, and the Yankees were playing against the St. Louis Browns. In past years, Dad would have taken me. It hurt to read about baseball, until I spotted an article on a new outfielder named Pete Gray, who was dominating the game. Then I knew I had to get my father to that game.
At dinner, Mom asked about my birthday. I said, “I want Dad to take me to the ballpark.” Dad just shook his head. I reminded him how he used to teach me to watch the fielders. He cut me off: “Go with a friend, or go alone.”
After dinner, I handed Mom the article about Gray who was excelling in the major games. Her face lighting up, she promised to urge Dad until he gave in.
Sunday morning, Dad, clean-shaven and wearing a jacket with his empty sleeve stuffed into the pocket, walked with me to the bus. He was silent, his face blank. At the stadium, I had chosen seats where we could see Gray up close.
When Pete Gray stepped out, Dad leaned forward. Gray was tall and strong, but his right sleeve hung empty. “Can he play?” Dad asked, inching forward on his seat.
注意:
1.写作词数应为150个左右;
With Dad’s eyes fixed on Gray’s empty sleeve, I saw a flicker of hope in his eyes.

With Dad’s eyes fixed on Gray’s empty sleeve, I saw a flicker of hope in his eyes. He straightened up and kept his gaze on Gray throughout the game. When Gray succeeded in a difficult play, Dad let out a quiet sigh, almost of relief. I gripped his good hand and whispered, “Dad, look! He’s doing everything you taught me. He never gave up, and neither should you. You still have your left hand, your sharp eyes, and all your baseball wisdom.” Dad’s jaw trembled, and for a long moment he stared at Gray, then, slowly but surely, his hand squeezing mine back.
When the game finally ended, I knew something inside Dad had shifted. He rose from his seat, his face softer. He started talking about Gray’s techniques, his voice hesitant but alive. I seized the chance: “Let’s practice tomorrow; you can still show me everything.” He looked at his empty sleeve, then at me, nodding firmly. I tossed him a soft ball; he caught it cleanly with his left hand. For the first time in two years, he smiled and I realized my hope had become his, and baseball had given us back not just a game, but each other.
