【What】Starting out以“First day of school questionnaire”创设真实的入学情境,围绕第一天的情绪、第一印象、认识的第一个人、最喜欢的校园元素和最印象深刻之处,引导学生从自身经验进入主题;同时配有视频问题“What do these students do at school?”“How is this school different from your school?”,帮助学生关注不同学校生活。Understanding ideas的核心语篇“My First Day at Senior High”是一篇第一人称日记式记叙文,共8段,按时间顺序讲述Meng Hao从“上学前—到校—英语课—课后反思”的经历。
语篇并未回避紧张、出错和尴尬,而是通过Mr Meng的支持性话语“Keep calm and be prepared.”“make the most of your time at senior high”传达成长型心态:挑战本身不可避免,关键在于个体如何回应。结尾引用“Well begun, half done.”将个人经历上升为可迁移的人生经验,具有明显的情感态度与价值观教育功能。文化层面,课堂自我介绍、first impression、teacher-student interaction等场景体现英语文化中相对直接的课堂互动方式,也为学生比较自身学校生活、发展开放而自信的沟通意识提供入口。
【How】语篇采用“时间推进 + 情绪变化”的双线结构。时间上由before school、arriving at school、during the English class、after the class串联事件;情绪上形成excited/eager → curious → surprised → nervous/panic → embarrassed → relaxed → confident/positive的变化曲线。文本大量使用第一人称I,增强现场感;一般过去时叙述主要事件,过去进行时呈现正在发生的背景动作(I was looking... / I was organising...),过去完成时交代先于另一过去动作发生的经历(I had pictured... / I had met... / we had introduced...),使叙事层次清晰。
语言表达具有鲜明的记叙和口语特征:直接引语推动情节并塑造人物;“I tried to turn on my brain but the engine just wouldn’t start.”用隐喻表现紧张导致的思维空白;“With butterflies in my stomach”用习语形象呈现忐忑;“in panic”“a lot more relaxed”直接标记情绪变化;“How true these words were!”“What?!”等感叹强化心理反应。衔接方面,after, when, before, so, but, although, that way等时间与逻辑连接手段共同构成“事件—反应—转折—领悟”的叙事链。
学情分析
1. What I know(已知)
2. What I want to know(想知)
学生可能提出:Meng Hao的第一天为什么从兴奋变成紧张?为什么全班突然笑?Mr Meng的哪句话真正帮助了他?“butterflies in my stomach”为什么不是字面意义?“Well begun, half done.”该怎样理解?面对高中新的学习与社交挑战,我可以具体做什么?这些问题构成本课阅读动机。
3. What I learned(课后预设)
(1)能够通过标题、图片和首尾段预测并识别语篇主题,利用skimming在2分钟内选出最符合Meng Hao第一天的总体描述;(2)能够通过scanning从8个段落中提取关键事件,完成“Before going to school—Arriving at school—During the English class—After the English class”时间线;(3)能够识别并在语境中理解eagerness, impression, insect, butterflies in my stomach, panic, embarrassed, relaxed, challenge, pressure, calm, prepared, make the most of等核心语言;(4)能够使用“Before..., I... / When..., I felt... because... / Although..., ... / That way...”
2. 证据化人物理解:学生能够从eagerness, surprised, butterflies in my stomach, in panic, embarrassed, more relaxed等文本标记中推断情绪变化,并用because连接证据与判断。
3. 主题意义表达:理解并能复述Mr. Meng关于challenge, pressure, keep calm, be prepared, make the most of的核心建议。

Activity 1 Starting out: First-day pulse check
T: Good morning, everyone. We are beginning Unit 1, “A new start”. Before we read anyone else’s story, I want to know about YOUR first day. Please look at the “First day of school questionnaire” on Page 1. For Question 1, choose one or two words that best describe your feeling on your first day at senior high: excited, nervous, happy, curious, proud, or another word.
Ss: Individual work for 20 seconds; students tick their choices and add one word if needed.
T: Now show me with your fingers: 1 for excited, 2 for nervous, 3 for curious, 4 for mixed feelings. Look around. Are our feelings the same?
Ss: Students respond nonverbally, then two volunteers complete: “On my first day, I felt ___ because ___.”
T: Different feelings are normal at a new start. Today we will read about a student named Meng Hao. While reading, keep one question in mind: Did his first-day feelings stay the same?
以教材原有问卷而非额外情境导入,迅速唤醒学生真实入学经验,降低开口门槛;通过全班可视化投票建立“情绪可能变化”的问题意识。属于“感知与注意”,服务于文化意识中对个体差异的尊重,并为后续情绪线阅读设置真实阅读目的。
3 min
Activity 2 Predict from title, picture and diary form
T: Turn to Pages 2–3. Do not read the whole passage yet. Look only at the title “My First Day at Senior High”, the diary page, the date “Monday 4 September”, and the drawings. What kind of text is it likely to be: a school rule, a diary/narrative, or a news report?
Ss: Pair work. Students identify it as a diary-like first-person narrative and point to visual evidence.
T: Good. Now predict three things. Where will the story happen? What events may happen on a first school day? What feelings may appear? Write three keywords, not full sentences.
Ss: Possible answers: campus/classroom; meet teachers, introduce oneself, make friends; excited/nervous/curious.
T: Prediction is not guessing without evidence. We use the title and visuals to build expectations, and then reading will confirm or revise them. Let’s test your predictions.
训练“读前预测”这一元认知策略,引导学生从标题、日期、版式和插图识别日记式记叙文的体裁特征。预测内容限定为“地点—事件—情绪”,直接对应后续阅读框架,避免无目的通读。
4 min
Activity 3 Skim for the overall impression
T: You have two minutes. Skim the eight paragraphs. Do NOT stop at unfamiliar words. Read the first and last sentence of key paragraphs and notice emotional words. Then choose the best description in Activity 3 on Page 4.
Ss: Individual skimming. Students choose Option 3: “He was not sure about life at senior high, but after the English class, he felt more confident.”
T: Which words helped you reject the other two options? Find one clue for the beginning and one for the ending.
Ss: Beginning clue: “I’m wondering what life is going to be like here.” / nervous before introducing himself. Ending clue: “a lot more relaxed” and “a good beginning to my new school life.”
T: Exactly. A good main idea must cover both the beginning and the change, not just one funny event. So our reading focus is clear: experience plus change.
通过限时略读完成教材主旨选择题,明确“全文描述=经历+变化”,培养整体阅读意识。要求学生说明排除依据,使答案从“选对”升级为“用文本证明”,初步建立证据意识。
5 min
Activity 4 Scan and build the experience timeline
T: Now we read for specific information. Look at Activity 4 on Page 4. The table already gives us four time stages. Group A scans Paragraphs 1–2, Group B scans Paragraphs 3–6, and Group C scans Paragraphs 7–8. Underline ONLY actions or events first. Do not write feelings yet.
Ss: Group scanning. Students locate exact expressions and complete the experience column: first day at senior high; woke up early and rushed out of the door; decided to explore a bit; met a man who later turned out to be his English teacher; introduced himself; shared the same name with the teacher; challenges may put students under pressure; keep calm and be prepared; had a good beginning.
T: Let’s check in chronological order. Before going to school—what two actions show his eagerness?
Ss: “woke up early” and “rushed out of the door.”
T: Arriving at school—why did he explore? What surprise was hidden in this part?
Ss: The campus was still quiet, so he explored. The white-haired man was later his English teacher.
T: During the English class—what created the embarrassing moment?
Ss: He was too nervous to pay attention to the teacher’s introduction, so he did not know they shared the same name.
T: After the introductions, what three pieces of advice did Mr Meng give?
Ss: Challenges may put us under pressure; keep calm; be prepared; make the most of our time at senior high.
T: Good. Put these events on your four-part timeline. A narrative becomes easy to retell when time order is visible.
用教材表格作为信息组织支架,采用“分组寻读—全班拼图—个人回填”的方式减轻信息负荷。先找事件、暂不找情绪,帮助学生区分事实信息与人物感受;时间线可视化强化记叙文结构意识,并为后续情绪推理提供事件坐标。
8 min
应用实践
Activity 5 Trace the feeling curve with textual evidence
T: We know WHAT happened. Now let’s read HOW Meng Hao felt. In pairs, circle every word, action or image that reveals a feeling. Then place the evidence on a feeling curve from the beginning to the end.
Ss: Pair close reading. Expected evidence: “pictured it over and over again” / “in my eagerness” → excited/eager; “I’m wondering...” → curious/uncertain; “surprised to see the same man” → surprised; “the engine just wouldn’t start” / “With butterflies in my stomach” → nervous; “in panic” → panicked; “embarrassed” → embarrassed; “a lot more relaxed” → relaxed; “a good beginning” → positive/confident.
T: Which feeling is stated directly, and which one must be inferred from an image or action? For example, does “butterflies in my stomach” literally mean insects?
Ss: No. It is an idiom meaning he felt very nervous. “The engine wouldn’t start” is a metaphor for his mind going blank.
T: Excellent. Use this frame to explain one change: “Meng Hao felt ___ when/because ___. After ___, he became ___.”
Ss: Example: “Meng Hao felt embarrassed when everyone laughed because he had not realised his teacher had the same name. After Mr Meng explained kindly, he became more relaxed.”
T: That is evidence-based reading: feeling + evidence + reason, not feeling alone.
本环节完成从“事实提取”到“人物解释”的认知升级。通过直接情绪词、动作描写、习语和隐喻四类证据,训练学生推断隐含信息;句式支架要求建立“情绪—事件—原因—变化”的因果链,对应思维品质目标。
7 min
Activity 6 Read deeper: challenge, response and growth
T: Focus on Paragraphs 7–8. Mr Meng says, “Challenges like this might sometimes put you under pressure. But it all depends on what you do.” What does “this” refer to in the story?
Ss: Introducing oneself in front of the class and other new challenges at senior high.
T: Which part is outside Meng Hao’s control, and which part is inside his control?
Ss: The challenge is outside his control; how he reacts and prepares is inside his control.
T: Good. Now complete this logic chain: Challenge → possible pressure → ______ and ______ → make the most of senior high.
Ss: keep calm; be prepared.
T: Read the final saying: “Well begun, half done.” Is it saying a good first day guarantees success? Or does it mean a positive, prepared beginning gives us a strong start? Explain in one sentence.
Ss: Students choose the second interpretation and justify it with the story.
T: Exactly. The story is not about never feeling nervous. It is about how we respond to nervousness and challenges. That is the value of a new start.
围绕段7—8进行主题意义探究,把教师话语从“金句记忆”转化为逻辑结构“挑战—压力—应对—成长”。通过“可控/不可控”分类帮助学生形成内在控制感,并对谚语进行非字面化解释,落实从理解到分析、评价的思维进阶。
6 min
迁移创新
Activity 7 Transfer: Make a Senior High Support Card
T: Imagine a new student will join our class tomorrow. He or she says, “I’m worried about making friends, answering questions in class and keeping up with homework.” In groups of four, make a “Senior High Support Card”. Choose ONE challenge and give practical advice.
T: Your card must include four parts: ① Challenge; ② Possible feeling; ③ One action before the challenge; ④ One action during/after it. Use at least two expressions from today: keep calm, be prepared, make the most of, under pressure, first impression, or “When..., I/you can...”.
Ss: Groups assign roles: reader, language checker, writer and speaker. They create a 4-line card and prepare a 30–45 second oral recommendation.
Ss: Example: “Challenge: speaking in class. You may feel nervous and under pressure. Before class, be prepared and write two key words. When it is your turn, breathe deeply and keep calm. Every try helps you make the most of your time at senior high.”
T: Two groups share. Listeners use three checks: Is the advice specific? Does it connect to today’s text? Is the language clear?
Ss: Peer assessment with thumbs/brief comments; speakers revise one sentence if necessary.
T: You have now moved from Meng Hao’s story to a real problem in our own class. That is what reading is for: understanding others and improving our own choices.
设置真实而可执行的“新生支持”任务,把文本主题和核心语言迁移到学生自身校园生活。四要素任务框架降低开放表达难度,分工确保边缘学生参与;同伴评价以“具体、关联、清楚”为标准,使评价嵌入产出过程,落实迁移创新和学习能力。
7 min
Activity 8 Homework & extension(作业布置)
作业提示与评价
5 min
T: Let’s finish with one sentence: “A new start does not mean I will never feel nervous; it means I can ______.” Write your own ending on the exit ticket.
Ss: Students write one personal ending, e.g. “keep calm and be prepared / learn from an embarrassing moment / ask for help and try again.”
T: For homework, choose the basic task AND one extension task according to your needs. Your work should show today’s three things: a clear timeline, evidence for feelings, and a useful response to challenge.
作业一(基础必做)
完成教材P4 Activity 4未完成部分,并以“My First Day at Senior High”为题写一个80—100词的mini diary。必须包含:①至少3个按时间顺序的事件;②至少3个情绪词/表达;③一个转折;④一句对自己高中生活的期待。
可用支架:Before I came to..., I felt... / When..., I... / At first..., but later... / Although..., ... / I learned that...
语言要求:至少使用3个本课表达(如under pressure, keep calm, be prepared, make the most of, first impression)和1个含when/although/because的复合句。
提示:建议必须“具体可做”,避免只写“Study hard / Don’t be nervous”。例如把“be prepared”具体化为“prepare two questions before class”或“pack the schoolbag the night before”。
展示评价:同伴按Specific(具体)—Relevant(贴合挑战)—Supportive(有支持性)三个维度各给1星,并提出一句可执行的修改建议。
5 min
