phones,robots,high-speed trains and electric
cars.Smartphones bring great convenience for
online shopping,movie watching and video
chats.Robots help with housework and save
our time.High-speed trains speed up trips and
make travelling much easier.Besides,electric
cars are environmental-friendly,which can save
energy and protect our environment.

Nan Rendong, the chief scientist and engineer of China's
Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope(FAST),was
a pioneer(先驱)in the field of astronomical research(天文研
in China. He spent more than 20 years on the project, which
made it one of the world's most powerful radio telescopes that
can watch the universe in detail.
Born in 1945,Nan studied Physics at university and later
went abroad for further education. However, when he learned
that China planned to build a large radio telescope,he gave up
his comfortable overseas life and returned to his motherland.
His goal was clear-to build a telescope that could help humans
explore the mysteries of the universe.from distant galaxies to
the birth of stars.
The construction of FAST was extremely challenging. The
chosen site was a remote valley in Guizhou Province where
there were no roads or modern facilities in the beginning.Nan
led his team to climb mountains and cross rivers to carry out
surveys, and they solved dozens of technical problems during
the process.In 2016,FAST was finally completed.It is about 30
times more sensitive than the second-largest radio telescope in
the world and can pick up radio signals from billions of light
years away, which means it can "hear"sounds that no other
telescope has ever detected(检测).
Sadly,Nan passed away in 2017 due to illness and did not
live long enough to see all the achievements of FAST.However,
his contribution has been deeply remembered. The international
astronomical community named an asteroid(小行星)after him
in honour of his great work.
Today,FAST continues to run well.It helps scientists dis-
26
cover new pulsars(脉冲星)and study the origin of the uni-
verse. It stands as a shining symbol of Chinese wisdom and in-
novation, and a lasting honour to Nan's lifelong devotion to sci-
ence.

ternational programme.
D.He aimed to join in the construction of China's

the process.
D.FAST is 30 times larger than the world's second-
largest radio telescope.

world.
B.The project was completed within 20 years.
C.Nan Rendong's hard work played a key role in
FAST's success.

A.Because he discovered lots of new asteroids with
FAST.
B.To show respect for his great work on building
FAST.
C.Because he spent all his life studying asteroids in
Guizhou.
