The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an ecological (生态的) disaster area. Nauru’s heartbreaking story could have one good result—other countries might learn from its mistakes.
For thousands of years, Polynesian people lived on the remote island of Nauru. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798. He was the British captain of a whaling ship. He called the island Pleasant Island.
However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. Then whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and wine. These things destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island. And a ten-year civil war started.
Nauru’s real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining (采矿) company discovered phosphate (磷酸盐) on the island. In fact, it found. that Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which is a very important fertilizer (肥料) for farming. The company began mining the phosphate. Constant mining totally destroyed the land. Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.
In 1968, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate.
Unfortunately, the leaders invested (投资) the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal use. Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem-their phosphate was running out. Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing. By 2000, Nauru was almost financially (经济上) destroyed. Experts say that it would take about $433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen.
51.What changed Nauru from a beautiful place to a disaster area?
A.The arrival of European traders.
B.The discovery and mining of phosphate.
C.The long civil war among families.
D.The leaders’ personal use of money.
52.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Mining made the land empty and broken.
B.The island became as bright as the moon.
C.People built spaceship-like buildings.
D.The island’s shape became round like the moon.
53.Which of the following was a cause of Nauru’s financial problem?
A.Its leaders misused the money.
B.It spent too much repairing the island.
C.Its leaders spent much money mining.
D.It lost millions of dollars in a war.
54.What can we learn from the numbers in the last paragraph?
A.Nauru can easily raise $433 million for repairs.

【导语】本文主要介绍了太平洋岛国瑙鲁从曾经的美丽岛屿逐步沦为生态灾难区的发展历程。
【详解】51.根据文章第四段“Nauru’s real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate... Constant mining totally destroyed the land.”可知,磷酸盐的发现和持续开采彻底破坏了土地,使原本美丽的岛屿变成了生态灾难区。

B
During my two years living in London, I found that the British people really enjoy eating and drinking outdoors. What’s more, when the weather is nice, restaurants and bars always bring out chairs, and everyone eats, drinks, and chats in the sunlight or under the lights. This continues even in winter.
Chinese people generally don’t eat or drink this way, except at markets. Markets always bring people joy. China is vast, and each place has its own special market. There are no wonderful kitchens in the markets. Usually just a couple of tables and chairs are enough to allow people to have a simple meal in an open-air setting.
The Shahe Market opens every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Here, you will still see people using cash. Fruit and vegetables are piled into small mountains on trucks. Besides, when you see something delicious, you just buy and eat it, getting your hands and mouth oily, because with so many people in the market, no one will even notice. At the Shahe Market, I first experienced the beauty of the northern winter morning sun, round and bright, hanging in the sky. It was the sun of Beijing at around 7 o’clock in the morning. However, people from all over the country create a unique winter atmosphere in Beijing, bringing together a blend of different regional customs.
The open-air market is like the city of Beijing itself. It is so vast that it seems to be able to accommodate everything, and yet because of its size, it also seems to provide a sense of invisibility (无形), allowing you to feel warm and free, where every person who arrives can find something for themselves.

B.the writer likes eating and drinking outdoors

57.In Paragraph 2, the words “this way” mean “_________”.

58.Why can people only have a simple meal in the market?

b. No wonderful kitchens.
c. There are just a few tables and chairs.
d. It is in the open air.
A.abc B.acd C.bcd D.abd
59.The third paragraph is mainly about ________.
A.the writer’s experience in the Shahe Market
B.what you can eat in the Shahe Market
C.the date when the Shahe Market opens
D.the unique atmosphere in the Shahe Market
60.What is the writer’s idea about the market?
