In the Nepali village of Sauraha, tourists eagerly photograph a wild Indian rhinoceros(犀牛)grazing near the street. As the animal wanders into the village, locals warn visitors to keep their distance. When it approaches a cyclist, the crowd gasps. Fortunately, a hotel manager safely guides the rhino away using a bright flashlight, ending the close encounter without harm.
However, such incidents highlight a growing challenge: human-wildlife conflict. As Nepal’s conservation efforts succeed, wildlife populations are increasing. For example, the number of rhinos has grown from about 100 in the 1970s to nearly 700 today. While this is a great achievement, it also means more frequent encounters between animals and people, leading to fear and loss of livelihoods.
Doma Paudel, Nepal’s first female trail guide, understands this struggle deeply. Growing up near a national park, she often watched animals from a watchtower to protect her family’s crops. Tragically, her mother was killed by a rhino in 2004 while gathering firewood. In traditional Nepali society, women frequently enter forests for wood and food, making them more likely to be attacked by wild animals. In 2024 alone, eight of the eleven people killed by large animals were victims of rhino attacks.
To address this, Paudel founded the Wildlife Victim Fund and organized workshops for young environmentalists. They develop strategies to teach communities, especially women and children, how to coexist safely with large wild animals. Farmers like Balkrishna Bhattarai have noticed rhinos entering their fields more often. Recently, a rhino killed his 22-year-old son who tried to chase it away from their crops. In another case, Juna Bote lost her husband to a tiger while he was fishing with friends. Now, she must raise five children alone and fears entering the forest, yet she has no choice but to gather firewood to survive.
Despite these hardships, Paudel remains hopeful. She believes that with proper education and community effort, people and wildlife can share the same space. “If we love nature, nature will love us back,” she says, emphasizing that coexistence is essential for both human safety and wildlife conservation.

Most metals change when they are exposed to air. Iron turns into rust (铁锈), and copper develops a green surface over time. Gold, however, seems different. It can remain bright and nearly unchanged for thousands of years. A recent study has revealed a reason why gold is so resistant to damage.
Scientists found that the surface atoms of gold can change their positions, forming a special structure that makes the surface less likely to react with oxygen. This change prevents oxidation, the process that causes many metals to lose their original appearance. Without this natural protection, gold would start to react with oxygen within seconds after being exposed to air.
To understand this process, researchers studied how easily gold surfaces could break oxygen molecules apart. Oxygen in the air usually exists as pairs of oxygen atoms. For oxidation to happen, these pairs must first be separated, and then the oxygen atoms can combine with the metal and form a new layer on its surface.
The researchers focused on two common arrangements of gold atoms. When a new gold surface appears, such as after the metal is cut, the atoms can move and form a different pattern. One pattern is square-shaped, while the other is closer to a hexagonal(六边形的)shape. Using computer calculations, the scientists found that the square pattern allows gold to react with oxygen more easily. The hexagonal pattern, however, made this process much harder because the atoms would need to move back into their original positions first.
The study also showed that even if gold does react with oxygen under special conditions, it would only create a very thin layer. The discovery helps scientists better understand how the surfaces of metals work and may improve the design of materials used to speed up chemical reactions.
According to the researchers, the difference caused by such small changes in atomic positions was surprising. After the atoms rearrange themselves, gold’s reaction with oxygen can become hundreds of millions of times slower. This explains why gold can keep its beauty while many other metals gradually change.
8. What helps prevent gold from oxidizing?
A. A thick layer of oxygen. B. Its bright and shiny color.
C. The separation of oxygen pairs. D. Its surface atoms’ rearrangement.
9. What is special about the hexagonal pattern according to the text?
A. It slows down oxidation. B. It allows gold to react easily.
C. It forms a thick surface layer. D. It separates oxygen pairs quickly.
10. What is a possible application of this study?
A. Finding more gold in nature. B. Changing the color of metals.
C. Stopping iron from rusting forever. D. Designing better chemical materials.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Metals Rust in the Air B. Why Gold Stays Shiny for So Long
C. How to Protect Metals from Oxygen D. How Metals React When Exposed to Air
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. B

D
Today’s teachers face a tough situation with generative AI. New tools are appearing rapidly, from personalized tutors for students to lesson planners and graders for teachers. Schools are traditionally slow to adapt to change, which makes such rapid-fire developments especially destabilizing.
This AI wave hits when teachers are already struggling. They lack time and resources while facing high expectations for both academic results and students’ emotional growth. Many are exhausted and leaving the profession. This matters because teacher quality is the top factor in student success, especially for disadvantaged kids. How teachers use AI could decide whether it narrows or widens existing fairness gaps in education.
Research on public school teachers shows mixed feelings about AI. Interviews with 22 teachers in a diverse U. S. school district reveal both hope and worry. Many appreciate AI as a “thought partner.” Creating lesson plans with AI saves time and reduces stress. One teacher noted it improved work-life balance and provided support when feeling isolated.
However, not all teachers feel ready. A major problem is the lack of training and planning time. Learning a new tool takes effort, and many schools don’t offer enough professional support. Studies show that schools with fewer resources are less able to help teachers use new tech effectively. As a result, well-funded schools can better support their staff, which often makes educational inequalities worse.
Teachers also emphasized that AI cannot replace the human connection in education. A machine can provide information, but many students still need teachers’ guidance, encouragement, and communication to truly learn. A good teacher does more than share knowledge; he or she builds relationships with students.
All in all, teachers are crucial in determining how and whether AI, like all new technologies, is used to support their teaching and student learning. That’s why we believe the practices established during this current period of rapid AI development and adoption will profoundly influence whether this technology creates a fairer education system or makes existing differences even greater.
12. What does the underlined word “destabilizing” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Causing disorder and loss of balance.
B. Making teaching more challenging now.
C. Giving teachers extra work and pressure.
D. Speeding up the process of school change.
13. What matters most to students’ success according to the text?
A. Students’ effort. B. Teacher quality. C. School resources. D. Advanced AI tools.
14. What is the author’s main concern regarding the AI wave in education?
A. It will eventually replace human teachers.
B. It might weaken the teacher-student relationship.
C. It reduces students’ emotional growth.
D. It may widen existing educational inequalities.
15. What determines whether AI narrows the fairness gap?
A. The financial support schools can offer.
B. The speed of AI technology development.
C. How teachers integrate AI into their work.
D. The academic pressure students are facing.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When our family finally returned home after a two-week vacation, we immediately noticed something unusual. Leaves and broken branches covered the yard, and several flower pots had been knocked over. It was clear that a powerful hurricane had swept through the neighborhood while we were away.
Then my younger sister, Lily, suddenly remembered the rabbits.
Before leaving, we had carefully prepared everything for them. Their food box was filled with enough rabbit food, fresh hay was placed in their small wooden house, and clean water was ready in a large container. Dad had checked the roof and fence carefully, believing they would stay safe. We had also asked our neighbor Mrs. Green to look after them if necessary.
Lily and I hurried to the corner of the garden where we had built a small wooden house for them before the vacation. We had spent several weekends working on it together. We painted it white and made it comfortable, believing it would be the perfect home for Bobby and Fluffy.
However, when we reached the garden, we froze in disbelief. The lovely little house had completely collapsed. What remained was only a pile of broken boards and scattered pieces of wood.
“Where are Bobby and Fluffy?” Lily whispered anxiously, eyes filled with tears.
We searched everywhere, calling their names again and again. We looked behind bushes, under trees, and even inside the damaged bushes, but there was no sign of them.
Just as we were about to lose hope, Mrs. Green walked over with a smile.
“I’ve been waiting for you to come back,” she said.
Seeing our worried faces, she explained, “The hurricane was much stronger than expected. When I noticed the rabbit house beginning to fall apart, I knew I had to act immediately.”
She paused for a moment before continuing, “I hope you don’t mind, but I took Bobby and Fluffy to my garage before the wind became too dangerous.”
Hearing that, Lily and I both let out a long sigh of relief. Mrs. Green smiled, turned around, and said, “Come with me.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Following Mrs. Green, we hurried toward her garage.

The next morning, we started building a new house for the rabbits.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Following Mrs. Green, we hurried toward her garage. As soon as the door opened, we saw Bobby and Fluffy sitting peacefully in a warm corner, enjoying fresh food. They looked healthy and safe. My sister rushed over and gently picked one up with a big smile on her face. We thanked Mrs. Green again and again for helping us. She simply smiled and said that anyone would have done the same. Looking at the rabbits, we felt not only relieved but also deeply touched by her kindness.
The next morning, we started building a new house for the rabbits. Instead of simply repairing the old house, we decided to build a stronger one. Soon our neighbors joined us. Some brought wood, while others offered tools and useful advice. Even the children helped paint the walls. A few days later, a beautiful new rabbit house stood in the garden. It was stronger, safer and more comfortable than before. Looking at the rabbits playing happily inside, I realized that kindness and teamwork can help people overcome any storm and create something even better.

4. Why did the hotel manager use a flashlight?
A. To take photos of the rhino.
B. To scare the rhino back to forest.
C. To safely direct the animal away.
D. To warn tourists to keep distance.
5. Why are women often at greater risk of wildlife attacks in Nepal?
A. They often enter forests. B. They are weaker than men.
C. They lack basic survival skills. D. They grow up near national parks.
6. What can be inferred about Nepal’s conservation?
A. It brings both success and new challenges.
B. It focuses mainly on protecting wild animals.
C. It has led to a drop of local human population.
D. They have fully solved human-wildlife conflict.
7. What is Paudel’s attitude toward human-wildlife coexistence?
A. Critical and worried. B. Hopeful and positive.
C. Objective and neutral. D. Doubtful and pessimistic.
C

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
