But using them isn’t always as easy as you’d want — and that’s putting it mildly! Do the manufacturers do it on purpose? Sometimes it can seem like the manufacturers deliberately make them complicated — and how you do things is often hidden away. It might be easy once you know, but until you’ve been shown the easy way, it can drive you mad. It can be like talking a different language. That’s why we’ve published these three books: iPhones One Step at a Time, Android Smartphones One Step at a Time and Doro Smartphones One Step at a Time. Plain English… and that’s not all They explain how to use the phone, in plain simple language with pictures of the screen showing you exactly where to tap or slide your fingers. What one reader had to say: “Thanks for a fantastic smart phone book. I think this book should be sold with every smart phone.” Don’t buy now, do this instead The books aren’t available in the shops or on Amazon. Instead, send off now to get a completely free information pack. It’ll explain what the books cover, who they’re suitable for and so on — showing you just how it could help you. Just give us a ring on 01229 777606 and speak to Emma, Jade, Alicia, Karen or Steph — you can call weekdays 8 am-5:30 pm or Saturdays 9 am-3 pm. Or send your name and postal address to HI0922@helpfulbooks.co.uk to get your full information pack — we’ll put it in the post to you straight away (and we’ll keep your details private — we won’t share them). 1. What probably drives smartphone users mad? A. The phones are hard to operate. B. The phones can just make calls. C. The users are ignored by producers. D. The users fail to talk a different language. 2. What do we know about the three books? A. They guarantee readers’ personal privacy. B. They are in simple language with screenshots. C. They can be bought either in shops or on Amazon. D. They are sold together with every new smartphone. 3. What is the text? A. A poster. B. A profile. C. An advertisement. D. An autobiography. B Often called “man’s best friend,” dogs are famous for their willingness to please people, while cats are generally thought to be more stand-offish. A new study reveals the truth in these reputations — dogs are more interested in helping humans than cats are. The study involved 38 untrained pet dogs, 22 pet cats, and 19 human toddlers (幼儿). In the experiment, a human caregiver would start looking for an object, such as a toy, that had been hidden in a location where the test subject could easily see it. The caregiver said things like, “Oh no, I can’t find it!” but never directly asked the subject for help. All the dogs, cats, and toddlers paid attention to their caregiver or looked at the hidden object during the search. Researchers watched them to see if they would make an effort to help the person find it. Among both the dogs and the children, more than 75% showed an interest in helping the person find the object. Many gestured toward the object’s location or went to find it for their companion, even though they received no reward for doing so. Cats, on the other hand, were unlikely to help the human. When researchers hid a cat toy or treat, however, many of the cats approached the object or indicated its location. This suggests that cats choose to get involved in the situation only when they can personally benefit from helping someone. Researchers believe that this difference in behavior comes from the ways dogs and cats evolved (changed slowly over time). Dogs’ ancient ancestors lived in cooperative packs. Canines (犬类) have also spent thousands of years living and working alongside humans as domesticated companions, so they are naturally willing to help us. Meanwhile, cats’ ancestors were solitary (独居的) creatures. Experts say cats are not being “mean” when they don’t help out. They’re just being independent. Another attentive animal: A goat. Goats can follow human directions to find food, a new study has found. When a human sat near an empty bucket but spoke excitedly toward a different bucket filled with food, goats were more likely to go to the bucket that had the food. They seemed to be able to follow the direction of the person’s voice. Experts think this skill is linked to domestication, the process by which wild plants or animals become adapted to living with people. Goats have been domesticated for about 10,000 years. Dogs have also shown the ability to follow the direction of a human voice. But chimpanzees, which were never domesticated, have not. 4. What does the new study find? A. Why dogs are man’s best friends. B. Where cats are different from dogs. C. What dogs and cats are interested in. D. How dogs and cats get the reputations. 5. Why do cats offer help in certain situations? A. To gain personal interests. B. To satisfy human masters. C. To show their sharp eyesight. D. To display their friendliness. 6. What contributes to dogs’ natural willingness to assist humans? A. Natural interest in cooperation. B. Regular rewards from human owners. C. Independence from human companions. D. Ancestral lifestyle and long domestication. 7. Why are chimpanzees mentioned in the last paragraph? A. To show their lack of sensitive hearing. B. To prove domestication shapes the skill. C. To show they are less intelligent than goats. D. To compare survival skills between different species. C A life-changing treatment has been used to restore the sight of a six-year-old girl called Saffie who lives in Hertfordshire, England. Saffie has a rare condition called Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA). Her mum said the family was originally told that Saffie would be blind by the age of 30, but the treatment has made a huge difference. People are born with LCA. It’s caused by faulty genes, which are short sections of DNA, chemicals that contain the instructions for how a person will develop and grow. LCA stops the eye from making an important protein that is needed for normal vision. Proteins are natural chemicals that help the body to function. Babies and children with LCA have poorer vision in normal daylight and no vision when it’s darker. Saffie was diagnosed (诊断) with LCA when she was five years old. Her parents had noticed that she was struggling to see in low-light conditions. After the diagnosis, she was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, so that she could have an eye gene therapy (治疗) called Luxturna. The award-winning therapy works by injecting (注射) a working version of the damaged gene into the eye. This allows the eye to produce the protein needed to work properly, and slows down how the disease progresses. In April 2025, Saffie had the gene therapy injection in one of her eyes. She then had it in the other eye in September 2025. Her mum said, “The treatment has been life-changing, and it has restored her sight in the dark”. Saffie and her family have been able to enjoy evening activities that they couldn’t before, like going to restaurants and trick-or-treating at Halloween. It has also made things easier for Saffie during the daytime. She can see things that are at the edge of her vision better. This means she can spot hazards (danger) around her, and it has also helped to improve her school work. Saffie’s mum said, “We know it might not last forever, but we feel fortunate every day that she has been given this chance.” Scientists from Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London also published a study showing that Luxturna can improve sight and strengthen connections between the eyes and the brain. From 2020 to 2023, the scientists followed the progress of 15 children who received the treatment, with promising results. Rob Henderson, an eye doctor at Great Ormond Street Hospital, said, “For many of the families we work with, even small improvements in their child’s ability to see the world around them make a great difference.” 8. What are people with LCA like? A. They are born to be blind. B. They lack vision-essential protein. C. Their vision will develop as they grow older. D. Their DNA sequences are shorter than normal ones. 9. What do we know about Luxturna? A. It has stable therapeutic effects on patients’ lives. B. It can fully cure LCA and prevent potential hazards. C. It has gained widespread application worldwide since 2020. D. It delays disease progression and enhances eye-brain connections. 10. What is Rob Henderson’s attitude towards Luxturna? A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Unconcerned. 11. What is the best title of the text? A. A Treatment to Restore Sight B. Genes Responsible for LCA C. A Therapy for a Brain Disease D. Symptoms Associated with LCA D Brazilian artist and activist Mundano recently used some unusual substances to paint a picture on a building in Sao Paulo. The paint included materials, such as ash and mud, collected from natural disasters. The mural (壁画) is very large — over 30 meters high and 48 meters wide. The artist used ash from wildfires and mud from floods. His painting shows the gray remains of trees on brown land so dry it cracks. The picture represents the deforestation and severe drought in the Amazon rainforest. The mural also shows Indigenous activist Alessandra Korap wearing a circle of flowers around her head. She holds a sign that says: “Stop the destruction. Keep your promise.” The artist says those messages are directed to Cargill, a massive soybean producer based in the United States. Soy farming is one of the biggest causes of deforestation in the Amazon. Cargill says on its website that it will eliminate deforestation from its supply chain in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay by 2025. Mundano is seeking to hold the company accountable. “We are tired of being a country, a continent where we and the natural resources we have here are exploited (开发) … We have to regenerate our planet instead of destroying it,” the artist said in an interview. Drought has caused a critical situation nationwide. Weather predictions show that this will continue in much of the country through at least the rest of October. On October 22, the depth of the Amazon’s Negro River measured 12.46 meters, representing a small increase from 10 days earlier. At that time, the river was at its lowest point since measurements started 122 years ago. And this last reported measure is still about 6 meters below normal for the same date in earlier years. Rivers in Brazil’s Amazon always rise and fall with its rainy and dry seasons. But the dry season this year has been much worse than usual. Mundano, who calls himself an “artivist” (a combination of artist and activist), used mud from that flood to create the new mural. The activist group Movement of People Affected by Dams collected the materials. Mundano also used ashes from Brazil’s fires in the Atlantic Forest, the Pantanal, and the Cerrado. He also used earth found in waste containers in Sao Paulo and clay collected from the Sawre Muybu Indigenous land in the Amazon, where Alessandra Korap is from. “From floods to droughts, everything is connected! Human activities such as cutting down rainforests are largely responsible for these terrible natural disasters. Therefore, we should take action to stop harming our environment right now.” Mundano said recently in an Instagram post. 12. Why did Mundano create the mural in Sao Paulo? A. To display the beauty of nature. B. To create a large-scale painting. C. To highlight the issue of climate disasters. D. To collect the remains from extreme-weather events. 13. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Track. B. Speed. C. Stop. D. Investigate. 14. Why does the writer give the example of Negro River? A. To show the serious drought this year. B. To introduce a famous river in Brazil. C. To illustrate the changes of river levels. D. To explain the reasons of climate change. 15. What does Mundano tell us to do in the last paragraph? A. Watch out for fires. B. Stop damaging rainforests. C. Exploit natural resources. D. Recycle unusual substances. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s OK to be angry Everyone feels angry sometimes. It’s part of being human. However, anger is a powerful emotion that is often difficult to deal with. Sometimes it can be good, because anger pushes you to change something you’re not happy about. ____16____ Is it OK to feel angry sometimes? “Anger is a normal emotion and it’s absolutely ok to have these feelings sometimes,” says Dr. Priya Nathwani, a psychiatrist (an expert in how people think, feel and behave) who supports children with their mental health. It’s common for teenagers to feel angry. ____17____ Besides, the part of the brain that helps to manage emotions doesn’t fully develop until you’re in your mid-20s. ____18____ Being angry doesn’t mean you’re a bad-tempered person. Things like feeling stressed or people being unkind. Things like feeling misunderstood or being embarrassed can cause feelings of anger too. How to deal with anger? My articles were filled with simple sentences and all kinds of grammar mistakes, so I often got low marks in every English exam. Every time the teacher handed out exam papers, I would quickly cover my paper, afraid that my classmates would see my terrible scores. Watching them get high marks without much effort, I felt deeply upset and helpless. Little by little, I even made up my mind to give up English writing completely. Luckily, my English teacher soon noticed my bad mood. Instead of blaming me for my poor performance, she stayed after class and talked with me patiently. She told me that valuable progress never comes in a short time, and sticking to daily practice is the most useful way to get through all kinds of difficulties. Her warm words brought me a little hope again. Encouraged by what she said, I decided to make a real change. I bought a thick notebook to write down beautiful sentences and useful expressions from Reader’s Digest every day. After finishing my schoolwork, I rewrote my compositions again and again. Each afternoon after class, I went to her office and handed my revised articles to her to correct all my mistakes. I reviewed these marked points every night to avoid making the same errors next time. However, two months of steady hard work did not bring me better results. Staring at the disappointing paper covered with red lines, I lost all my confidence once more. I could not help wondering if all my time and effort meant nothing at all. 注意: 1. 续写词数应在150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1 One afternoon, I wandered into my teacher’s office with tears welling up in my eyes. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 Months later, the city-wide English examination arrived. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2027届高三调研性监测 英语 满分:150分 考试时间:120分钟 注意事项: 1. 1. 【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. Goats have been domesticated for about 10, 000 years. Dogs have also shown the ability to follow the direction of a human voice. But chimpanzees, which were never domesticated, have not.(一项新研究发现,山羊能够听从人类的指令寻找食物。 C A life-changing treatment has been used to restore the sight of a six-year-old girl called Saffie who lives in Hertfordshire, England. Symptoms Associated with LCA 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. 【答案】12. C 13. C 14. A 15. Sometimes it can be a sign of something else. “Often anger is a reaction to feeling hurt, threatened or frustrated,” says Nathwani. “It can be an intense feeling that we notice in our bodies and it might include tense muscles, feeling hot or a fast heartbeat.” ____19____ It’s not always obvious triggers (诱因) that can make you feel anger. Things like feeling stressed or people being unkind. Things like feeling misunderstood or being embarrassed can cause feelings of anger too. How to deal with anger? Although it’s OK to feel angry sometimes, it’s not healthy when anger takes over and makes you react in a negative way, Nathwani says. “____20____ Next time you feel angry, try to slow down your breathing, take some time out and explain to someone why you are feeling that way.” Although it can feel hard, talking about your emotions to someone you trust can help you to realise why you’re feeling the way you do and help to resolve the issue that’s causing negative feelings. A. What does anger mean? B. What’s your reaction to anger? C. There are ways to handle anger without it taking over. D. Sometimes you might not even know why you’re feeling this way. E. When anger comes over you, others can easily tell what has annoyed you. F. It can be unhelpful to hurt others with words or actions when we are angry. G. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Paragraph 1 One afternoon, I wandered into my teacher’s office with tears welling up in my eyes. I told her honestly that I planned to give up English writing, because my daily practice failed to bring satisfying scores and left me discouraged. My teacher comforted me patiently and pointed out my silent progress in grammar and expression that I had ignored. Encouraged by her warm words, I adjusted my study methods. I sorted out all my writing mistakes, memorized useful sentences, and revised my old compositions over and over again. I kept practicing steadily, hoping to make real progress step by step. Paragraph 2 Months later, the city-wide English examination arrived. Sitting in the exam room, I felt a mix of nervousness and expectation. When facing the writing task, I felt worried at first, fearing I might make stupid mistakes. However, all the skills and expressions I had practiced hard came to my mind naturally. I organized my ideas logically, finished the composition smoothly and checked every sentence carefully. After the exam, I felt unusually peaceful and confident. When the results came out, I was delighted to find my writing score improved greatly. I learned that constant perseverance is the key to progress, and no sincere effort will ever go to waste. 词汇激活 行为类 ①放弃:give up/quit/abandon ②忽视:ignore/neglect/disregard 情绪类 ①沮丧的:discouraged/frustrated/downhearted ②担心的:worried/concerned/afraid 【点睛】[高分句型1] I told her honestly that I planned to give up English writing, because my daily practice failed to bring satisfying scores and left me discouraged.
