Art Speaks Where Words Fail

Art is everywhere — in museums, on walls, and even on our phones. But why do we create it? In May 2026, the China Academy of Art held its graduation exhibition in Hangzhou. Titled “The Present is the Future,” it attracted over 300,000 visitors in just three weeks.

The exhibition featured works from young artists — oil paintings, ink wash, photography, and digital art. One piece that drew much attention was an interactive installation where visitors could draw with light. Another was a series of paintings that explored the relationship between humans and nature.page number 0

What makes art so powerful? Perhaps because it expresses what words cannot. When we feel joy, sadness, or confusion, art gives us a way to share those feelings. The artists at the exhibition were not just showing their skills — they were sharing their thoughts about the world.

As one visitor said, “I don’t always understand the art, but I always feel something.” This is the magic of art — it speaks directly to the heart.

Questions:

1. When and where was the “The Present is the Future” exhibition held?

2. How many people visited the exhibition?

3. What types of artworks were featured?

4. What did one of the interactive installations allow visitors to do?

5. What did the visitor mean by saying “I don‘t always understand the art, but I always feel something”?

The Artist Who Makes Us Think

Xu Bing is one of China’s most famous contemporary artists. He is known for his thought-provoking works that challenge how we see language and culture. In June 2026, his retrospective exhibition “Book from the Sky / Book from the Ground” opened in Beijing.

His most famous work, Book from the Sky, is a set of books filled with made-up Chinese characters. They look like real Chinese, but no one can read them. Xu spent three years creating these characters. Why? He wanted people to experience what it feels like to be unable to read — page number 1

even in their own language.

In contrast, Book from the Ground uses only symbols and emojis. Anyone in the world — regardless of language — can understand it. Xu said, “Language divides us, but images connect us.”

Xu Bing’s work reminds us that art is not just about beauty. It is about asking questions. What is language? How do we communicate? And what do we lose — or gain — in translation? These are questions that have become even more important in our globalized world.

Questions:

1. What is Xu Bing known for?

2. What is Book from the Sky about?

3. Why did Xu Bing create made-up characters?

4. What is special about Book from the Ground?

5. What did Xu Bing mean by saying “Language divides us, but images connect us”?

When Murals Come to Life

The Dunhuang Mogao Caves are home to some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. Painted over 1,000 years ago, the murals tell stories of Buddhism, trade, and daily life along the Silk Road. However, the pigments are fading, and the walls are cracking.

In July 2026, a special exhibition called “Millennium Murals — Digital Rebirth” opened in Shanghai. It was co-organized by the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Dunhuang Research page number 2
