B In Aleksandra’s studio in Haikou, the capital of Hainan, an oil painting of St. Basil’s Cathedral hangs beside a portrait capturing the grace of a woman from the Li ethnic group, symbolizing two distinct aspects of the artist’s life. Raised in a family of artists, the 24-year-old Russian woman developed a profound love for painting from an early age. Six years ago, she relocated to Hainan and set up her studio there. Her fascination with Chinese culture was bolstered when she was 10 years old. “I picked up the language through the internet, books and TV. I simply adore Chinese culture.” In 2018, driven by her passion, Aleksandra journeyed to Hainan to study, where she was captured by the island’s peaceful natural beauty and unhurried pace of life. “It’s an incredibly beautiful place, and the people are kind, charming and authentically simple,” she reflects. “Life unfolds at a leisurely pace, allowing them to harmonize with nature.” Living in Hainan enables her to immerse herself in nature and humanity, two beloved themes in her artwork. The local people and culture have become essential to her life as she and her husband, whom she met on the island, have ventured through its landscapes together. “We ventured into the heart of Hainan. It was during these journeys that I first encountered the Li people,” she recalls. The Li brocade (织锦) has left a lasting impact on her. This traditional textile of the Li ethnic group in Hainan is regarded as a “living fossil” of the textile industry, boasting a history of over 3,000 years. “When you witness a woman weaving this brocade, she is narrating a tale passed down through generations, such as that of Dalishen, the God of Strength, watching over us. It not only inspires me but also empowers me to create,” she says. She strives to capture the complicated patterns of the brocade in her paintings, weaving local culture into her creations — a process that has brought her profound satisfaction. 4. What inspired Aleksandra to set up her studio in Haikou? A. Her passion for painting. B. The low cost of living. C. Her desire for further study. D. The local scenery and lifestyle. 5. What does the underlined word “bolstered” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Fueled. B. Recovered. C. Blocked. D. Weakened. 6. What is a feature of Aleksandra’s works? A. They tell fairy stories. B. They reflect Li ethnic culture. C. They center on weaving techniques. D. They stress the history of the Li people. 7. What is the purpose of the text? A. To attract people to Haikou. B. To highlight China’s cultural diversity. C. To advertise an artist’s works. D. To introduce a foreign artist in China. C As the school year began, millions of students in 17 states, from New York to Kentucky, were newly prohibited from taking phones into the classroom. This brought the total to 35 states with such rules, though researchers had noted that scientific evidence for the benefits was thin. However, a new working paper by Dr. Alp Sungu of the University of Pennsylvania offers convincing evidence from a large-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) — the gold standard in social science. The study involved 16,955 students taking 2,000 courses in India, randomly assigned to phone-submission or phone-access classrooms. The phone-free students performed better academically. The increase was greatest among first-year students who were low performers and studying subjects outside of science and maths. The average improvement was on the order of 0.086 standard deviations (标准差). This is small, but the effects of most educational interventions are small. For comparison, it is similar to “replacing an average teacher with a very good one” for a term, says Dr. Sungu. “That could make the difference between passing and failing, and potentially reduce dropout rates and increase graduation rates over time,” says Dr. Beland, an economist at Carleton University. “For low-achieving students, even slight differences can really matter,” he says. The study by Dr. Sungu and his team also found that bans created an environment that facilitated learning. Random classroom spot-checks found less student chatter and interrupting behaviour. Bans are easy to conduct, requiring no training and little investment. Perhaps more importantly, many students can see the benefits. After experiencing a ban for a term, students in the Indian study were 20% more likely to support prohibitions, with the largest increase in approval for the most restrictive policy option: phone-free schools. Even if banning phones becomes a universal, evidence-based policy, though, there are still tablets and laptops, equally distracting. Some studies of computer use in college classrooms in America found exam scores declined. This suggests that phone bans may fail, as in Swedish schools, because students simply switch to laptops. American schools should take notice. 8. What makes Dr. Sungu’s research findings convincing? A. The research method. B. The data analysis. C. The research duration. D. The theoretical foundation. 9. What does Dr. Beland think of phone bans? A. They rely much on teachers to succeed. B. They help reduce classroom misbehavior. C. They can bring about significant influence. D. They are mainly intended for phone addicts. 10. What happened to the Indian students after the phone ban? A. Top students made greater progress. B. They preferred less strict policies. C. Weak students supported the ban most. D. Their support for the ban increased. 11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Stricter phone bans are needed in US schools. B. Other electronic devices also deserve attention. C. Effects of the policy vary from country to country. D. The policy’s benefits may result from other factors. D In the next few months, millions will apply for postgraduate study. Most plan to get a master’s degree, hoping it will help them stand out in a crowded job market. People often think they need a master’s degree to get or keep a job, mainly because they feel insecure, yet research shows a master’s usually raises pay much less than a college degree, and some programs leave graduates worse off. Despite the limited benefits for graduates, universities still have reasons to admit more postgraduates. In Britain, undergraduate fees are controlled by the government and have barely risen for ten years. Enrolling more postgraduates, who can be charged higher fees, is one way to make more money. In America, as fewer young people attend college, universities hope more students will return for master’s degrees. Since 2000, the cost of studying for a master’s in America has tripled. Many students still pay high fees because they believe higher degrees will help them earn more. In fact, people with a college degree make about 70% more than high-school graduates, while those with a master’s earn about 18% more. The subject chosen matters most. In America, master’s degrees in computer science and engineering bring the biggest pay rise. In some subjects, people even earn less. In Britain, men with a master’s in politics make about 10% less in their mid-30s than those who only studied it at college; for history, the drop is about 20%, and for English, nearly 30%. Women are more likely than men to gain from a master’s degree. A British study finds such degrees raise women’s earnings in 14 of 31 subjects, but for men, only in six. This is surprising because men usually earn more, and the gap grows with education. Still, women with higher degrees often earn more than those without, as they tend to work longer hours, especially after becoming parents. 12. What motivates many people to pursue a master’s degree? A. They want to gain an edge in the job market. B. They expect to find easier jobs after graduation. C. They hope to earn more than college graduates. D. They wish to prepare for further academic study. 13. Why do many universities want more postgraduate students? A. To earn more from higher tuition fees. B. To cope with the rising undergraduate fees. C. To attract returning students and adult learners. D. To provide more opportunities in technical fields. 14. What is the writer’s attitude toward people’s pursuit of master’s degrees? A. Appreciative. B. Unconcerned. C. Objective. D. Disapproving. 15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. How a Master’s Degree Increases a Graduate’s Pay? B. Why Universities Enroll More Postgraduate Students? C. The Decline in Students Pursuing a Master’s Degree. D. The Value of a Master’s Degree and Its Impact Factors. Problem-solving skills are increasingly valuable in the workplace and could help you achieve more in your personal life too. While playing, Anna said to the kids, “I am going to plant something in the garden. Who would like to help me?” “What are you going to plant, Grandma?” asked Julie. “I like pleasant, bright-colored roses.” “But I like lively, big, yellow sunflowers!” said Fred. “Well, I’m going to plant some vegetables so that we can have fresh vegetables to eat when they are ready,” said Anna. “How long does that take?” asked Erik. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially tomatoes. “It will take several months before anything is ready to eat,” answered Anna. The kids were surprised. “Several months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?” asked Julie. “Why not just go to the store and buy them?” “Patience, my sweeties! Don’t you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself?” replied Anna. “And if all of you come to help, it won’t be too much work.” “I’ll help you, Grandma,” offered Erik. He put down the basketball and went to look at the gardening tools Anna had laid out. “What should we do first?” Fred and Julie came over to have a look, too. Firstly, Anna taught Erik how to use a travel (小铲子) to dig rows of small holes for the seeds. Next, she showed Julie how to pour the seeds into each hole carefully. And then it was Fred’s job to cover up the holes with soil little by little. Finally, Julie wrote the vegetable names on sticks that Erik pushed into the ground. “This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we have planted,” said Anna. After planting everything, the kids took turns in filling up the watering pot so that Anna could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow. “From now on, we just water them a little each day, and with some time and sunshine, we’ll have some delicious things to eat in the summer,” said Anna. Every time the kids came to visit, they would rush into the garden as fast as possible. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eventually, Anna said, “It was about time for the first harvest.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 宝鸡中学2024级高三第一学期诊断性考试试题 英语 本试卷共五大题,77小题。 1. 4. D 5. A 6. B 7. 故选A。 根据最后一段“She strives to capture the complicated patterns of the brocade in her paintings, weaving local culture into her creations—a process that has brought her profound satisfaction.(她努力在画作中捕捉黎族织锦的复杂图案,将当地文化融入她的创作中——这一过程给她带来了极大的满足感。)” 根据第一段“In Aleksandra’s studio in Haikou, the capital of Hainan, an oil painting of St. Basil’s Cathedral hangs beside a portrait capturing the grace of a woman from the Li ethnic group, symbolizing two distinct aspects of the artist’s life.(在海南省会海口的Aleksandra工作室里,一幅圣巴索大教堂的油画挂在一幅描绘黎族女性优雅的肖像旁边,这象征着这位艺术家生活的两个不同方面。)” D。 C As the school year began, millions of students in 17 states, from New York to Kentucky, were newly prohibited from taking phones into the classroom. A 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第二段“However, a new working paper by Dr. Alp Sungu of the University of Pennsylvania offers convincing evidence from a large-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) — the gold standard in social science.(然而,宾夕法尼亚大学的Alp Sungu博士所撰写的一份新工作论文提供了来自大规模随机对照试验(这是社会科学领域的最高标准)的有力证据)”可知,Sungu博士的研究成果因为其研究方法令人信服。故选A。 根据第三段““That could make the difference between passing and failing, and potentially reduce dropout rates and increase graduation rates over time,” says Dr. Beland, an economist at Carleton University. “For low-achieving students, even slight differences can really matter,” he says.(卡尔顿大学的经济学家Beland博士表示:“这可能会决定学生能否通过考试,而且从长远来看,还可能降低辍学率并提高毕业率。” 根据倒数第二段“After experiencing a ban for a term, students in the Indian study were 20% more likely to support prohibitions, with the largest increase in approval for the most restrictive policy option: phone-free schools.(在经历了为期一段时间的禁令后,印度研究中的学生支持禁令的比例提高了20%。 根据最后一段“Even if banning phones becomes a universal, evidence-based policy, though, there are still tablets and laptops, equally distracting. American schools should take notice.(即便禁止使用手机成为一项普遍且基于证据的政策,但仍有平板电脑和笔记本电脑存在,同样会分散学生的注意力。 B。 D In the next few months, millions will apply for postgraduate study. 12. A 13. A 14. C 15. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eventually, Anna said, “It was about time for the first harvest.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Every time the kids came to visit, they would dash into the garden as fast as possible. Not surprisingly, they were going to see how the garden was growing. After watering the vegetables, they would remove the weeds that popped up around the plants and apply organic fertilizer under Nana’s instruction if necessary. As time went by, the plants were growing taller and stronger. When they noticed the vegetables flowering and producing fruits, their eyes were sparkling like diamonds. Never had they looked forward to summer like this before. But they clearly knew that it’s worthwhile to wait for the inviting results. Eventually, Anna said, “It was about time for the first harvest.” Hearing that, the children all jumped into the air and cheers filled the whole garden. Nana gave them each baskets and, together they gathered some of the cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes, which we’re turned into delicacies. “Who wants to help eat this fresh salad?” Nana asked. “Me!” everyone responded loudly. Tasting the salad, they thought nothing could be more delicious, because it was they who grew these vegetables. They all learned that many hands make light work and patience really pays off. 词汇激活 行为类 ①查看:see/examine ②去除:remove/wipe out ③注意到:notice/take notice of 情绪类 ①值得:worthwhile/worthy ②清楚:clearly/ fully aware of 【点睛】[高分句型1] After watering the vegetables, they would remove the weeds that popped up around the plants and apply organic fertilizer under Nana’s instruction if necessary.
