A
Public speaking is a common challenge for teenagers. Even excellent students may feel uneasy when they need to speak to a group of listeners. Some think good speakers are born with special talents. That is not the truth. Public‑speaking skills can be learned and improved through practice.
Before you give a speech, enough preparation matters a lot. You should think over your materials and organize your ideas clearly. Besides written content, your body language also counts. Keeping your head high and looking at different listeners can show your confidence. Slow down your speed and do not rush. You do not need to be perfect. It is okay to make small mistakes during your speech.
Many young speakers expect themselves to win high praise every time. If they don’t get good feedback, they will feel discouraged. Remember: every speech is a chance for practice, not just a competition. Progress happens little by little.
16.What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.Only clever students can do well in speeches. B.Public‑speaking skills can be trained by practice.
C.Born talents decide all your speaking results. D.Teenagers should avoid public speaking.
17.Which of the following is good advice for public speaking?
A.Speak as fast as you can to finish quickly. B.Keep your head down all the time.
C.Prepare your speech materials ahead of time. D.Make sure you never make any mistakes.
18.What is the writer’s opinion on speech feedback?
A.You must get high praise every speech. B.Bad feedback means you are completely useless.
C.Every speech serves as a chance to practice. D.Speeches should be seen as serious competitions only.
根据第一段最后一句“Public‑speaking skills can be learned and improved through practice.”
17.根据第二段第一句“Before you give a speech, enough preparation matters a lot.” 选项A违背了“Slow down your speed”;选项B违背了“Keeping your head high”;选项D违背了“It is okay to make small mistakes”。
18.根据第三段最后一句“Remember: every speech is a chance for practice, not just a competition.”

In recent years, a special “eco-friendly bus” has appeared on the streets of some Chinese cities. This bus doesn’t carry people—it carries waste! It is called the “Garbage Sorting Bus”, and its job is to help communities sort their household waste correctly.
The bus travels through different neighborhoods on a fixed schedule. When it arrives, volunteers get on board to teach residents how to separate dry waste, wet waste, recyclables, and harmful waste. There are interactive games on the bus to make learning fun. For example, children can throw model garbage into the right bins and win small prizes.
The idea was first tested in Shanghai and proved to be very successful. Many residents said they found it much easier to understand the rules of garbage sorting after joining the activities on the bus. Some even started to teach their friends and family.
Now, more cities are planning to introduce similar buses. Environmental experts believe that this creative way of education can greatly improve people’s awareness of protecting the environment. As one expert put it, “If we want to build a green future, we must start with small daily habits—like sorting our garbage.”

Is There Such a Thing as “Bad” Music?
We all have our favourite songs, and we all have songs we cannot stand. Friends often argue about whether a piece of music is good or bad. But is there really an objective way to judge the quality of music? Or is it all just a matter of personal taste?
For hundreds of years, people believed that there was a standard for “good” music. In the European tradition, “serious” or “classical” music was clearly divided from “popular” songs. People were taught that symphonies and operas were superior in quality, while folk tunes and street songs were considered of lower value. This way of thinking lasted well into the 20th century.
Today, however, most music critics reject the old, strict division. They argue that quality can be found in any style. A well-made pop song can be as powerful as a classical symphony, and a traditional folk song like “Jasmine Flower” can carry as much emotion as an expensive opera performance. Good music, they say, is simply music that communicates successfully with its audience, no matter what form it takes.
At the same time, we cannot say that all music has equal quality. A song that copies the melody of another without creativity, or a performance in which the singer sings out of tune, can reasonably be called “bad”. Good music usually has something original, whether it is the combination of sounds, the meaning of the words, or the feeling behind the performance. It rewards repeated listens and still feels fresh years later.
Perhaps the answer is that taste and quality are two separate things. You might not like jazz personally, but you can still recognize that a well-performed jazz piece is well made. And even if you love a certain pop song, you might notice that its words are shallow and its tune has been copied many times before. Music, like food, has both personal preference and craft behind it. The best pieces are those that are both enjoyable to you and skillfully made by the artists.
23.According to Paragraph 2, people in Europe used to think that ________.
A.symphonies were of higher quality than street songs
B.classical music and folk music were equally valuable
C.everyone should learn an instrument in childhood
D.popular music showed greater originality
24.What do most modern critics believe according to the passage?
A.Strict divisions between styles help people judge quality better.
B.Only classical and opera can express true emotion.
C.Pop songs can never be as powerful as symphonies.
D.Good music can be found inside any style if it communicates well.
25.Which of the following would the writer most probably call “bad” music?
A.A folk song passed down for hundreds of years.
B.A live jazz performance with many improvisations.
C.A pop song that borrows the same melody from five old hits.
D.A classical piece that most young people find boring.
26.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Personal taste and quality are different, and we can separate them.
B.The best way to judge music is to ask what experts think.
C.People who do not like jazz usually cannot understand quality music.
D.Food and music are completely different in how we judge them.
【答案】23.A 24.D 25.C 26.A
根据第二段“In the European tradition, ‘serious’ or ‘classical’ music was clearly divided from ‘popular’ songs. People were taught that symphonies and operas were superior in quality, while folk tunes and street songs were considered of lower value.”
24.根据第三段“Good music, they say, is simply music that communicates successfully with its audience, no matter what form it takes.”
25.根据第四段“A song that copies the melody of another without creativity, or a performance in which the singer sings out of tune, can reasonably be called ‘bad’.”
26.根据最后一段“Perhaps the answer is that taste and quality are two separate things.”

Deep in the Amazon rainforest is a great natural wonder—the Boiling River (沸腾河).Local people call it Shanay﹣timpishka. It means "hot from the sun".For hundreds of years, people around the world have been interested in this unusual river.
The river is about 9 kilometres long. Most of its water is between 45°C and 100°C.The nearest volcano (火山) is 700 kilometres away, but the water stays hot all year.Steam (蒸汽) rises all the time,so the rainforest looks amazing and strange.
The river is an important place for local people. They use its hot water to cook, clean and keep healthy. But it is very dangerous.Small animals will die soon if they fall into the hot water.
People once thought the river was only a story. In 2011,scientist Andrés Ruzo discovered it was real. The heat (热量) does not come from volcanoes.Rainwater goes down deep into the ground. It gets hot underground and comes back up through small holes. This makes the Boiling River.
Now scientists study plants and animals here. They learn how living things live in high heat. This helps us understand life in hot places and may lead to new medicines. The river also shows scientists about the whole world getting warmer in rainforests.By studying how nature lives through heat,we can better protect our Earth. That is why the Boiling River is not just a wonder—it is a living classroom for all of us.
27 How does the writer introduce the Boiling River in Paragraph 2?
A.By telling a story.
B.By asking a question.
C.By listing numbers.
D.By giving an example.
28 Which of the following can show why the river boils?
A. B. C. D.
29 Why do scientists study the Boiling River now?
A.To make sure the river is real.
B.To help local people use the hot water.
C.To find out why the water is hot.
D.To study local living things and protect the Earth.
30 What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To call for help to protect the Boiling River.
B.To invite people to travel to the Boiling River.
C.To tell a famous old story about the Boiling River.
D.To introduce the Boiling River and its importance.
The river is about 9 kilometres long.Most of its water is between 45°C and 100°C.The nearest volcano is 700 kilometres away"(这条河长约9公里。
Rainwater goes down deep into the ground. It gets hot underground and comes back up through small holes. This makes the Boiling River."(雨水深入地下。 故选A。
Now scientists study plants and animals here. They learn how living things live in high heat...By studying how nature lives through heat,we can better protect our Earth."(现在科学家在这里研究植物和动物。

Dear Wang Ming,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your pocket money. Here is some advice for you.
First, why don’t you simply make a budget? Write down your income and plan your spending. When you have a clear plan, you will know where your money goes. Second, you should save money where you won’t spend it easily. For example, you can put your spare money into a moneybox or a bank account. The earlier you start saving, the more money you will have in the future. Third, one of the best ways to control spending is to set a goal. Think about something you really want, like a new laptop or a pair of shoes. When you want to buy something unnecessary, remind yourself of that goal.

A.Carrying passengers to work. B.Helping people sort household waste.
C.Selling recyclable products. D.Teaching children how to drive.

B.To complain about the difficulty of garbage sorting.
C.To advertise a new type of bus.
D.To teach people how to drive a bus.

D
