W: In what way is your school different from other schools?
M: Our school is for all children. A few of the children are physically disabled, and some of the others have learning difficulties. We have fast learners and slow learners.
W: And is yours the only school like this?
M: That’s correct. Up till now, disabled children and those with learning difficulties were sent to special schools. They grew up in a different world.
W: What made you decide to start this new school?
M: We realized that disabled children had no knowledge of children in ordinary schools. The opposite was also true. We thought it was important that all children should grow up together.
W: Do the slower learners hold up the faster learners?
M: No. For some classes, slower and faster learners are separated. In other classes they work together.
W: How does that work?
M: Well. The faster learners help the slower learners. That way they become very skilled as teachers. When it’s time for the faster learners to do a task or do their homework, they do it more quickly and better, too.

A
Composition of E-Waste
Nowadays, e-waste is one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams. Waste electronics contain harmful substances like lead and mercury, posing serious environmental and health risks.
However, e-waste also represents a valuable “urban mine”. It holds an estimated 31 million tonnes of metals, 17 million tonnes of plastics, and 14 million tonnes of glass. One tonne of circuit boards can contain up to 800 times more gold than a tonne of gold-bearing rocks. Despite this, less than 1% of rare earth elements are recycled.
Recycled e-waste is a valuable resource for sustainable manufacturing (制造业). Its metals, e.g. gold and copper, are reused in electronics, vehicles, and renewable energy systems. Recovered plastics find new life in durable products, while glass is processed into building materials. This circular (循环的) approach cuts energy use, reduces mining demand, and transforms waste into industrial resources, supporting both the economy and the environment.
The e-waste management market is projected to more than double by 2027. While 81 countries have adopted Extended Producer Responsibility laws, collection rates still fall behind policy goals.
To improve recycling, governments should strengthen EPR laws, and invest in facilities. Institutions can promote research and public awareness. Individuals should properly drop off e-waste at collection points, fix items rather than throw them away, and support brands with strong environmental commitments.
21. What percentage do screens and cables account for in all e-waste compositions?
A. 12%. B. 14%. C. 17%. D. 60%.
22. What is a key advantage of e-waste compared to natural mines?
A. It contains a greater variety of rare elements.
B. It provides more recoverable non-metals.
C. It can be richer in precious metals.
D. It works better as building materials.
23. What is suggested for individuals to help recycle e-waste?
A. Invest in formal recycling facilities.
B. Launch public awareness campaigns.
C. Set clear personal take-back plans.
D. Choose repair over replacement.
B 22. C 23. D

Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge(TFSJIC) for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shanya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype was difficult and the hardest part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed,” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage in all young people,” said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM(science, technology, engineering and maths) fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
24. What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system?
A. Her experience of a destructive fire.
B. Her desire to win the science award.
C. Her interest in computer programming.
D. Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
25. What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention?
A. It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct.
B. It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C. It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D. It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
26. Which of the following can best describe Shanya’s inventing work?
A. Thrilling. B. Smooth. C. Supported. D. Rough.
27. What’s the best title for this article?
A. Shanya Gill inspires the discriminated
B. Fire detection system is upgraded
C. TFSJIC ends with glory and promise
D. Middle schooler stands out in TFSJIC
A 25. B 26. D 27. D

C
Summer comes, and mosquitoes constantly buzz and bite, leaving red marks and ruining our sleep.
To fight them, DEET (避蚊胺) is assumed to be the gold standard for preventing mosquito bites. Most researchers agree that a key part of its effectiveness is unpleasantness — the bugs just hate to be around it. However, some mosquitoes seem capable of overcoming their revulsion, leading to the theory that the insects might be getting used to the chemical.
Claudio Lazzari at the University of Tours set out to investigate, by running a version of the experiments made famous by Ivan Pavlov in the late 1800s where dogs were conditioned to associate sounds with food. In those experiments, Pavlov routinely rang a signal bell and then immediately fed the dogs. Eventually, when he made the sounds but didn’t provide food, he found the animals still salivated (流口水), as they would before a meal.
In his experiments, Dr Lazzari presented hungry mosquitoes with warm sheep’s blood while being exposed to a gentle breeze of ordinary air or of air blown past a piece of paper soaked in DEET. After many similar repeated experiments, the researchers then bravely presented their own hands to the insects. One hand was covered in DEET while the other was left untreated. To their frustration they watched as 60% of the mosquitoes that had been presented with blood while being exposed to DEET bit the hand coated in DEET. In contrast, all mosquitoes trained with ordinary air avoided it entirely.
Dr Lazzari’s conditioning in the laboratory was important for the mosquitoes in developing their fondness for DEET. But the chances are good that a similar scene is taking place in the real world, where the effects of DEET typically weaken over time, especially when people are sweating or not applying enough of the stuff in the first place.
In such circumstances, hungry mosquitoes are most likely to be able to tolerate the faint smell of DEET, bite a lightly protected person, begin connecting the smell with food and become more dangerous to those they encounter later in their lives.
28. What does the underlined word “revulsion” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Dislike. B. Fondness. C. Desire. D. Curiosity.
29. Why was Pavlov’s experiment mentioned?
A. To prove DEET’s effect. B. To explain conditioning.
C. To honor early biologists. D. To analyze animal behavior.
30. What can we learn about the research from paragraph 4?
A. Sheep’s blood drove mosquitoes away. B. All mosquitoes weren’t thirsty for blood.
C. Ordinary air fueled mosquitoes’ appetite. D. Most mosquitoes were conditioned to DEET.
31. Why does DEET sometimes fail to keep mosquitoes away?
A. Sweat clears DEET completely. B. Mosquitoes associate it with food.
C. Its smell grows stronger over time. D. Human blood weakens the chemical.
A 29. B 30. D 31. B
根据第二段“Most researchers agree that a key part of its effectiveness is unpleasantness — the bugs just hate to be around it. However, some mosquitoes seem capable of overcoming their revulsion, leading to the theory that the insects might be getting used to the chemical.(大多数研究人员都认为,其有效的关键在于它的令人不愉快——虫子只是讨厌待在它周围。然而,一些蚊子似乎能够克服它们的revulsion,这导致了昆虫可能正在逐渐习惯这种化学物质)”可知,蚊子原本讨厌避蚊胺,后来克服的是这种厌恶感,故revulsion意为“厌恶,反感”,与Dislike意思最接近。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Claudio Lazzari at the University of Tours set out to investigate, by running a version of the experiments made famous by Ivan Pavlov in the late 1800s where dogs were conditioned to associate sounds with food.
根据第四段“To their frustration they watched as 60% of the mosquitoes that had been presented with blood while being exposed to DEET bit the hand coated in DEET. In contrast, all mosquitoes trained with ordinary air avoided it entirely. (令他们沮丧的是,他们看到,在接触避蚊胺的同时被提供血液的蚊子中有60%叮咬了涂有避蚊胺的手。相比之下,所有用普通空气训练的蚊子都完全避开了它)”可知,经过反复将避蚊胺气味与血液(食物)配对后,大部分蚊子被训练得不再排斥避蚊胺,即大多数蚊子对避蚊胺形成了条件反射。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In such circumstances, hungry mosquitoes are most likely to be able to tolerate the faint smell of DEET, bite a lightly protected person, begin connecting the smell with food and become more dangerous to those they encounter later in their lives. (在这种情况下,饥饿的蚊子很可能能够忍受避蚊胺微弱的气味,叮咬防护薄弱的人,开始将这种气味与食物联系起来,并对它们以后遇到的其他人变得更加危险)”可知,避蚊胺失效的原因是蚊子将它的气味与食物建立了联系,从而克服了厌恶。

From live speech translation in video calls to auto-dubbing on TikTok, real-time translation powered by artificial intelligence(AI) is now embedded in everyday life. All this raises a vital question. If machines can do this faster and more accurately than humans, is investing years in learning another language still worth it?
Our recent study examined cognitive performance in 94 adults aged 18 to 83, using both visuospatial and auditory tasks across working memory, attention and inhibition. Put simply, we looked at how people process and respond to information they see or mentally map out in space(visuospatial) and information they hear(auditory). Examples include remembering sounds, focusing on visual patterns, or ignoring distractions.
Our study measured multilingualism as a spectrum, not a category. This allowed us to capture diverse language backgrounds and experiences. Multilingual participants spoke a range of languages with varying levels of proficiency and daily use, reflecting the linguistic diversity common within multicultural communities.
Across most tasks, multilinguals and monolinguals performed similarly. However, one pattern was striking. Individuals with richer, more diverse multilingual experience showed markedly better performance in visuospatial working memory. These effects were most pronounced in older people.
This suggests that multilingual experience doesn’t broadly enhance cognition, like some headlines claim. Instead, it may help preserve specific functions over time. Separate population-level research has also linked multilingualism to later onset of Alzheimer’s disease and better overall ageing outcomes, though the mechanisms continue to be debated.
Overall, however, it appears that sustained use of multiple languages represents a form of mental activity with effects that accumulate across a lifetime.
AI translation excels at speed and accessibility. For many practical purposes, it works remarkably well. AI will continue to change how we engage with language learning. It can personalize instruction, minimize barriers and provide feedback at scale. But it can’t replace the cognitive work that comes from learning a language. This work builds and preserves the mental sharpness that sustains us across a lifetime. And this difference still matters.
32. Why does the author mention “live speech translation” and “auto-dubbing” in paragraph 1?
A. To choose one as the topic.
B. To invite further reflection.
C. To recommend translation apps.
D. To praise technological advances.
33. What do we know about the recent study?
A. Its method is totally traditional.
B. Its process is very time-consuming.
C. Its subjects are distributed across ages.
D. Its results match most previous claims.
34. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. AI translation excels in a wide range of aspects.
B. AI will not shake the value of language learning.
C. AI era greatly changes how people use a language.
D. AI has a long way to go before doing cognitive work.
35. Where is the article most probably taken from?
A. A science magazine.
B. A local news update.
C. A technological brochure.
D. An English-learning guide.
B 33. C 34. B 35. A

How to Protect Yourself from Creative Burnout
I like January because it gives me a chance to reflect — not only on the past year, but also on my long-term goals and the progress I have made. However, my recent experience has shown me how easily creative burnout can happen. ____36____
First of all, being in control of your own life is not as easy as it sounds. When someone else sets your goals, you simply follow them. But once you have to decide everything on your own, things become more complicated. ____37____ No one else can give you a clear answer.
In fact, the real difficulty is not carrying out a plan, but worrying whether you are doing the right thing. Time is limited, and you want to use it wisely. ____38____ As a result, you may feel tired even before finishing your work.
____39____ You cannot always be sure that your choice is the best one. So instead of overthinking, choose a goal and start working on it. Once you make a decision, stick to it for some time instead of changing it too often.
Another useful method is to make a simple daily plan. ____40____ You only need to list two or three important tasks and focus on them.
Finally, remember to take time to relax. When you work all the time, your mind cannot think clearly. After a short break, you may return with a better understanding of what is truly important.
A. Taking breaks allows your mind to recover.
B. That is when you begin to question your choices.
C. This helps you stay focused on what truly matters.
D. So it is necessary to learn how to avoid it properly.

根据上文“I like January because it gives me a chance to reflect — not only on the past year, but also on my long-term goals and the progress I have made. However, my recent experience has shown me how easily creative burnout can happen.(我喜欢一月,因为它让我有机会反思——不仅回顾过去一年,也思考我的长期目标以及自己取得的进展。然而,最近的经历让我意识到,创意性耗竭其实很容易发生)”可知,第一段开篇提到创造性倦怠很容易发生,后文开始介绍避免方法,D项(因此学会正确避免它很有必要)符合因果引出逻辑。
【37题详解】
根据上文“First of all, being in control of your own life is not as easy as it sounds. When someone else sets your goals, you simply follow them. But once you have to decide everything on your own, things become more complicated.(首先,掌控自己的人生并不像听起来那么容易。当别人为你设定目标时,你只需顺从;但一旦必须自己做出所有决定,事情就会变得复杂起来)”以及后文“No one else can give you a clear answer.(没有人能给你一个明确的答案)”可知,第二段前文提到自己做决定时事情会变复杂,后文提到没人能给你清晰答案,B项(这就是你开始质疑自己选择的时候)承上启下。
【38题详解】
根据上文“In fact, the real difficulty is not carrying out a plan, but worrying whether you are doing the right thing. Time is limited, and you want to use it wisely.(事实上,真正的困难并不在于执行计划,而在于担心是否在做正确的事。时间有限,你希望明智地利用它)”以及后文“As a result, you may feel tired even before finishing your work.(因此,你可能会在完成工作之前就感到疲惫)”可知,前文提到你会担心自己做的选择不对、时间有限,后文提到没完成工作就会感到疲惫,F项(你会一直怀疑自己的选择)点明了疲惫的原因。
【39题详解】
根据后文“You cannot always be sure that your choice is the best one. So instead of. overthinking, choose a goal and start working on it. Once you make a decision, stick to it for some time instead of changing it too often.(你不能总是确信自己的选择是最好的。因此,与其过度纠结,不如设定一个目标并开始行动。一旦做出决定,就坚持一段时间,不要频繁更改)”可知,后文提到你无法总能确定自己的选择是最好的,E项(不可能每次都做出完美的决定)引出下文观点。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Another useful method is to make a simple daily plan.(另一种实用的方法是制定一个简单的每日计划)”以及后文“You only need to list two or three important tasks and focus on them.(你只需列出两到三项重要任务,并专注于它们)”可知,前文提到做简单的每日计划,后文提到只需要列两三个重要任务并专注它们,C项(这能帮你专注真正重要的事情)衔接方法和作用。

which(指代先行词tubu)与root之间是被动关系,固定搭配be rooted in意为“植根于”,此处使用过去分词形式rooted。
时间状语so far是现在完成时标志,主语designs与exhibit之间是被动关系,主语为复数,结构为“have been+过去分词”,所以谓语动词为have been exhibited。
本句为it is...that...

It was a rainy, damp December day, the cold drizzle pattering against my car window as I headed to the store to pick up another week’s worth of food. The gray sky hung low, and the air was filled with the chill of winter, making the whole day feel gloomy. I had put off shopping for Christmas presents until later in the month, fearing the chaotic crowds of holiday shoppers — they always made the store feel tight and overwhelming. As I drove, I kept the CD player on, turning up the soft music to drown out the radio news, which always seemed to be filled with stories of division and conflict, leaving me feeling helpless and discouraged.
Still, I gave my young son a dollar, telling him to put it in the charity worker’s red container by the store door — a small act of kindness to ease the world’s divisions. We went in, and the warm air inside hit us, a welcome relief from the cold rain outside. We quickly filled our cart with groceries — fresh vegetables, bread, and some treats for the upcoming holiday. Then we walked towards the self-checkout machines. I hated using them; I much preferred chatting with the friendly cashiers, who always had a smile and a kind word. But the line at the regular registers was five deep, and I just didn’t have the time to wait.
As I pulled my cart up to a self-checkout machine, I heard the man next to me complaining quietly, his face lined with frustration. He only had a few items — a loaf of bread, a carton of milk, and a jar of jam — but every time he put his wrinkled, well-worn twenty-dollar bill into the machine, it was rejected. He sighed heavily, running a hand through his gray hair, clearly trying his hardest not to curse. I could tell he was growing more and more upset, his hands shaking slightly as he tried again and again to feed the bill into the machine.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I quickly grabbed a newer twenty out of my purse.

The old man waved goodbye, leaving us there with that torn twenty in hand.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I quickly grabbed a newer twenty out of my purse. It was crisp and clean, having just come from the bank that morning. I tapped the old man gently on the shoulder and handed him the bill with a warm smile. “Excuse me,” I said softly. “Try this one.” He looked up, his tired eyes meeting mine with a mixture of surprise and hesitation. Then he took the bill and fed it into the machine carefully. This time, the green light flashed, and a soft whir announced its acceptance. He let out a long, quiet breath. “Thank you, ma’am,” he murmured repeatedly before pressing his wrinkled twenty-dollar note into my hand.
The old man waved goodbye, leaving us there with that torn twenty in hand. My son tugged my sleeve. “Mama, can we still put that in the kettle?” he asked. I smiled and nodded. As we walked out into the cold drizzle, he dropped the old twenty into the kettle as he usually did, hoping it could bring a little joy to someone in need. That torn, rejected bill had found its place — just like a small kindness on a gloomy December day. As we drove home, we heard a quote from Mother Teresa on the radio: “Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.”

The driver of the car probably didn't see that a traffic light had changed from orange to red and ran into the side of the Lorry. That's correct. Listen to the next question. Dear coffee, thank you very much for inviting my family to your house for dinner. We really enjoyed our visit with you and your wonderful family. Please say hi to glen and Christopher for us. Our two weeks in canada were wonderful. At the end of our visit, we took a train ride across canada. Back to vancouver, the scenery was beautiful. On the train, I said next to an interesting woman from india, we might write to each other. We've been back in china for almost two weeks now. IT has been very cold since our arrival in beijing. I've been teaching a new course in english conversation for almost a week. I am preparing my lesson plans right now. Last week, David invited us to dinner, but we couldn't go. So he is coming to our house for dinner next saturday night. We're looking forward to hearing all about his new work. I hope that you and your family are doing well. We'd like you to visit us in china. We won't forget your kindness to us. Please send my regards to your family. Yours, tom.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
