2024 was the hottest year that had ever been recorded. Yet for most people alive today, it may turn out to be one of the cooler years they will experience in their lifetime. This situation results from a common mental pattern called shiftingbaseline effect. This psychological pattern makes people get used to the environment around them. Gradually, they lower their judgment standards for the environment and fail to notice slow environmental damage. It stops the public from realizing how serious climate problems really are. For example, young people often consider presentday weather and environmental conditions normal. However, older people, who remember the past, can easily see that the environment has become much worse. Gavin Schmidt, a scientist who studies climate change, points out that global temperatures have risen sharply over the past two years. “2023 and 2024 are unusual,” he says. Part of the temperature rise comes from El Niño, a natural ocean event in the tropical Pacific. It can bring a series of changes to weather across the world. Besides natural forces, human activities also push temperatures higher. Humans keep sending large amounts of greenhouse gases into the air. As temperatures go up, scientists warn that wildfires and other climatecaused disasters will happen more often. This mental pattern influences nearly all kinds of environmental problems. Recent studies show that most people hardly notice small, continuous climate changes, especially young people. Most research so far has been carried out in poor countries and mainly studied local farmers. Scientists believe people in rich countries may suffer more from this mental pattern. They are seldom directly influenced by climate harm, so they cannot feel environmental changes in real life. Many citizens already know the climate is in danger, but knowledge does not lead to action. Adam Aron, a university professor, says scientific facts alone cannot push ordinary people to make changes. Instead, social customs play a more important part. If many people in the community choose green ways of living, their neighbors are likely to follow. Social acceptance of certain behaviors can greatly influence public choices. 1.What is the main influence of the shiftingbaseline effect? A. It makes people fail to see slow environmental worsening. B. It helps people adapt to different natural conditions quickly. C. It pushes governments to carry out strict environmental rules. D. It makes young people more worried about global warming. 2.Why does the writer mention El Niño in Paragraph 3? A. To prove natural events are the only cause of global warming. B. To show both natural and human factors drive temperature rise. C. To explain why greenhouse gas pollution is getting less serious. D. To warn people that climate disasters can be completely avoided. 3.What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A. Poorcountry citizens suffer less from climate damage. B. Richcountry people feel climate harm in daily life. C. Young people are less sensitive to slow climate changes. D. Farmers have solved most local environmental problems. 4.What is Adam Aron’s suggestion for encouraging environmental action? A. Publish more scientific reports on climate change. B. Make full use of social customs to influence public behavior. C. Ask the government to pass more strict laws. D. Offer more climate lessons mainly for teenagers. Human beings easily get used to the world around them, which may create hidden trouble for environmental protection. 1 It refers to a mental pattern: people accept worse environmental conditions as normal and ignore gradual harm. Scientists have found 2024 set a new record for high global temperature. 2 On one hand, natural events such as El Niño contribute to the heat. On the other hand, human activities produce plenty of greenhouse gases. As a result, climaterelated disasters will take place more frequently. 3 Young people are more likely to overlook small climate shifts. Most related studies were done in poor countries and centered on farmers. People in wealthy nations, who rarely experience climate harm directly, are more affected by this mental pattern. Knowing about climate risk does not mean people will take practical action. 4 Simply spreading scientific information cannot produce satisfying results. Professor Adam Aron offers a new thought. 5 When plenty of people around choose green lifestyles, others will follow them. Shared social customs can serve as a powerful driving force for environmental protection. A. That is what the shiftingbaseline effect is about. B. Several causes work together to push global temperatures higher. C. Social customs can play an important role in shaping public choices. D. The shiftingbaseline effect affects people’s judgment of climate change. E. Poor countries have got rid of most of their climaterelated troubles. F. Many citizens are aware of climate danger but refuse to behave in ecofriendly ways. G. Governments should spend lots of money building large research centers. 1.What will the shiftingbaseline effect cause people to do? (No more than 13 words) 2.According to Adam Aron, what can push people into environmental action? (No more than 17 words) Li Hua attended a school lecture on climate change. From the speech, he learned about the shiftingbaseline effect. He came to understand that people would slowly get used to worse weather conditions and hardly realize hidden environmental damage. Many people around him knew the earth was facing climate danger, yet few changed their daily habits. The speaker explained that scientific knowledge alone could not push people to act. Social customs and group influence mattered a great deal. If more people in the community formed green living habits, others would probably copy them. Inspired by the lecture, Li Hua wanted to make a difference in his neighborhood. He planned to encourage neighbors to live in ecofriendly ways, but he doubted whether his idea would work. Paragraph 1:The next weekend, Li Hua put up notices in his neighborhood to call for green lifestyles. Paragraph 2:Several months later, obvious changes appeared in the neighborhood. A 选项 only 绝对化错误;C、D 无文本依据。 2.Making good use of accepted social customs. Paragraph 1:The next weekend, Li Hua put up notices in his neighborhood to call for green lifestyles. In the notices, he advised neighbours to save electricity and cut unnecessary waste. At first, most people just walked past without paying much attention. Fortunately, several families decided to give his suggestions a try. They turned off unused electric equipment and chose lowcarbon ways to go out. Seeing their efforts, Li Hua gained much confidence. Paragraph 2:Several months later, obvious changes appeared in the neighborhood. More and more residents followed those active families and developed ecofriendly habits. Living a green life gradually became a popular custom here. Looking at the great changes around him, Li Hua fully understood the speaker’s words. Simply knowing climate problems was far from enough. Social customs could effectively wake people up to hidden environmental harm. 现象 重点短语 1. turn out to be 结果是;证明是 2. result from 由…… 引起 3. get used to 习惯于 4. fail to do sth. 未能做某事 5. a series of 一系列 6. large amounts of 大量的(后接不可数名词) 7. carry out 开展,实施 8. so far 到目前为止 9. suffer from 遭受(伤害、苦难) 10. lead to 导致,造成 11. play a more important part 12. be likely to do sth.
