Last spring,my neighbor Donna and I,both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious
sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax,Donna pulled out her red metal
chair from her garage, and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket ()It was fun to catch up on the news that
we had missed during the long winter indoors
However, over the next few days,it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which
were not quite comfortable.Donna decided we needed a bench. After dismissing unsuitable options from
local stores, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived.Excitedly, she opened the box and
started putting it together. We proudly high-fived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to
look like one.After a few minutes'assistance from a neighbour,it was complete.What's more,it was the
perfect fit for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.
Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk."What do
you do on that bench?"Quick-thinking Donna called back,"It's our 'Thinking Bench'!We think about
important things happening in our lives."Then, the name gradually evolved-after one neighbor sat alone
deep in thought,he declared it a"Decision-Making Bench";another time, when Donna was caught napping,
she insisted she was“meditating(冥想)”,adding yet another name.
Last fall, with the temperature falling,we came to the end of sitting outdoors. We were faced with one
dilemma-what to do about it in the winter?Well,we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put
it in Donna's garage for the winter.
When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots.
and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm
sunshine, and we neighbors are ready to welcome"The Bench"back into our lives
24.Why did Donna decide to replace the chair and bucket?
A.To avoid unsuitable choices.
B.To get better seating for chats.
C.To attract more neighbors.

Why do some people keep making harmful choices, even when the outcomes are obvious?A new study
found that for a small group, the issue isn't lack of motivation or ability, but rather a subtle but persistent
failure to connect their actions with its consequences.
The paper, published in Nature Communications Psychology, details an online learning game where
participants were asked to click between two planets for rewards or to avoid punishment.Researchers observed
three behavioral types:Sensitives(avoid bad choices).Unawares(adjust strategies after being told their errors)
and Compulsives(still make wrong choices even after learning their mistakes)."Some people don't learn from
experience.Even when motivated to avoid harm, they fail to see their behaviour causes problems,"said Dr
Bressel.
This study followed past research, which only focused on Australian psychology students, but had key
differences:267 participants from 24 countries(including over 50-year-olds),six-month follow-ups,and post-
game surveys on their choices. The same behavioral profiles emerged across cultures and ages.In Australian
studies,35%were Sensitives,41%Unawares,23%Compulsives;in the new study,26%Sensitives,47%
Unawares,27%Compulsives.Dr Bressel linked more Compulsives to older participants,as cognitive
flexibility declines with age.Interestingly, when participants were invited back to play the same game six
months later,most showed the same behavioral prone."That was striking,"said Bressel."These aren't just
random mistakes. They're almost like personality types. This is not to say they're fixed, just that they may
require intervention to break."Researchers confirmed Compulsives'choices weren't habits:participants could
explain their wrong choices. This points to a deeper issue-a failure to integrate new knowledge to minimize
bad outcomes.
Dr Bressel noted real life is more complex than the game, but the pattern of ignoring experience and
information matches compulsory behaviors. The research has important implications for public health
messaging. Many campaigns rely on providing information-about smoking, drinking or financial risks-
with the assumption that people will act on it.But this study suggests that maybe information alone isn't
enough and specific intervention is needed."Standard information campaigns work for most but not for
everyone,"Dr Bressel said.
28.What were participants expected to do in the online learning game?
A.Make choices.
B.Win awards
C.Identify errors.
D.Observe behaviour.
29.What is a striking finding of the new study?
A.Cognition declines with age.
B.Unawares account for the largest
C.Behavioral patterns are consistent.
D.Mistakes influence personality types.

30.What does the author suggest for public health campaigns?
A.Reviewing behavior errors.
B.Developing tailored strategies.
C.Increasing lecture frequency
D.Promoting information campaigns.
31.Which is the best title for the text?
A.Knowing Right,Doing Wrong.
B.Leaming Risks,Behaving Safer.
C.Recognizing Habits,Acting Well

Are you more logical or creative?If you believe you're the former,you might be labeled"left-brained";
if the latter,then"right-brained".It's widely believed that the left brain is for analysis and the right is for
creativity and that our characteristics are determined by which half is dominant.
However, the idea that people are either left-brained or right-brained is a myth.Although we all obviously
have different personalities and talents, modern brain research hasn't found any conclusive evidence of left or
right brain dominance. One serious problem of this view is its one-sided definition of human abilities.Math.
for instance, which requires logical thought,is generally associated with the left brain, but it is also a genuinely
creative activity.So is a gifted mathematician left-brained or right-brained?Likewise,artistic creativity isn't
just uncontrolled emotion. Many of the greatest works of art are products of thorough, precise thought.
Like many modern myths, the left/right brain theory is rooted in a bit of real science. In the 1960s,Nobel
Prize-winning research on epilepsy (patients, who had undergone surgery to separate the two halves of
their brains, made an unexpected discovery:the right half was better at spatial tasks, while the left
excelled at language and problem-solving.Yet the real division of labor in the brain is far more complex than
the claim that"the left brain is for logic and the right is for creativity."
Then, why is the myth so popular? It satisfies our desire to label ourselves as simple"types".This works
much like the Barnum Effect,a famous psychological phenomenon:people easily believe general, positive
personality descriptions-like those from MBTI tests-are true and accurate.Similarly, the left/right brain
theory is popular because it gives us a"scientific"way to talk about our favorite subject-ourselves
32.What does the underlined part"a myth"in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.A false belief.
B.A mysterious idea.
C.An ancient concept.
D.An established theory
33.What can be known about a gifted mathematician?
A.He is artistically creative.
B.He has integrated abilities.
C.He is definitely left-brained.
D.He has uncontrolled emotion.
34.Which best describes the left/right brain theory?
A.It is truly objective.
B.It is entirely groundless.
C.It is scientifically proven
D.It is rather oversimplified
35.Why is the left/right brain theory popular?
A.It focuses on ourselves.
B.It uses the Barnum Effect.
C.It meets people's mental needs
D.It gives an accurate description.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
William Shakespeare may have written that"all the world's a stage",but sadly theaters witness a decline
in school visits due to budget pressures.36
The most obvious benefit is academic.Students watching a live play outperform those seeing the same
play as a film adaptation on knowledge of content and vocabulary.37 When seeing it brought to life,
重庆八中高2027级高三(上)入学测试第5页共8页
they can build a thorough understanding in discussing the staging and interpretations of stage directions.
Live theater also teaches how to develop relationships.People's heart rates synchronize (in a theater
audience. This is a behavior that has been shown to enhance social bonding.38 In fact, the common
heightened emotion of watching a play also teaches students that it's ok to feel and express emotions such as
sadness.
39 Schools really welcome using theater and plays to open up difficult discussions where students
can explore diverse perspectives and accept others with an open mind.As a result, students are more likely to
accept statements such as"I think people can have different opinions about the same thing"
Finally, theater helps open students'eyes up to the range of jobs available within the industry.40
There are many backstage roles, which often don't become obvious until you experience a live perfommance.
Given these significant benefits-academic,emotional,social,and occupationalschools should
guarantee that students never miss out on these transformative experiences.
A.Plays don't just require actors.
B.Live theater makes class discussion intolerable
C.The actual joumey to the theater also boosts social tolerance.
D.A synchronized audience is perfect for building social tolerance.
E.The shared experience of something moving helps people connect
F.Yet,live theater experiences remain vital for students'development
G.For those studying English plays,a text of a play is merely a blueprint.

Growing up in Istanbul,Turkey,I was accustomed to seeing street cats all over the city. But one yellow
tabby with beautiful brown eyes captured my heart. We played our version ofhide-and-seek around the yard-
he would sneak up from behind a tree until he reached me,and I would act startled.I named him Skippy.
Our bond soon traveled beyond the boundaries of our yard.Every moming,he would walk me to school.
Every afternoon,he'd wait at our home entrance, recognize my footsteps regardless of which shoes I was
wearing,and meow his greeting.My mother,worried about germs,established a strict rule-Skippy was to
remain an outdoor cat. However, love knows no rules. Each night,he would secretly slip in through my
window, sleeping warmly at my feet.At sunrise,I'd let him out, only for him to run to me as if we hadn't seen
each other for ages.
This routine continued for seven years. Then came a life-altering decision:I was going to the United
States for college-the hardest choice I'd ever made. Before departure,I hugged Skippy tight, not knowing
how to explain that I wouldn't return from school that day.
Life in the U.S.was busy, but my thoughts often drifted back to Istanbul. In every phone call to my
mother,I asked about Skippy.At first,she hesitated.Finally,months later,she sighed softly and broke the
news,"He kept coming to your window.Eventually,he stopped eating and disappeared.I'm sorry sweetheart,
but he is likely gone."
There was silence on the phone, interrupted by the sound of my sobbing.

Dear Ms.Anderson,
I'm writing to share my choice for our English Learning Corner.I would prefer the "English Book
Crossing Station."
My reasons are twofold.First,it can spark a genuine love for reading among us.Having access to original
English books in our classroom makes it convenient for us to read during breaks and inspires us to explore
new stories and ideas beyond our textbooks.Second, the sharing system after finishing a book,we can
recommend it to classmates, share our thoughts in person, and even start small group discussions. This not
only builds our reading skills but also strengthens our class as a reading community
I hope you can take my suggestion into consideration.
Yours sincerely.

读后续写
Paragraph 1:One year later.I flew back for winter break with a mixture ofexcitement and sadness.I was
excited to be home after so long, yet emptiness swallowed me despite the familiar warmth in my house.Gone
were the expectant brown eyes and the greeting meows at the entrance. The yard where Skippy and I played
hide-and-seek felt hollow.I wandered into my room, fingers tracing the scratches on the window through
which he used to slip in each night, memories flooding back-his warm weight at my feet, the soft purr that
accompanied me to sleep. My mother rested her hand on my arm.The hush was deafening, amplifying the
guilt simmering inside me since I left.Blinking back tears,I whispered an apology to the air, convinced that
my faithful companion was lost forever.
Paragraph 2:Suddenly,aflicker of movement outside the window ofmy room made me freeze.I held
my breath, fearing it was just an illusion from grief But there, emerging from behind the window was a
yellow tabby with those unforgettable beautiful brown eyes-It was Skippy!I threw the window open, leaned
out and called his name, heart racing with disbelief.I touched his thinner,a little dirty fur, warmth still
beneath my fingertips. He froze for a second then let out a faint yet recognizable meow and nuzzled my
petting affectionately.Tears of joy streamed down my face as I caught Mom's quiet smile, her eyes soft with
surprise, wordlessly sharing the sweet moment. Some bonds are too profound to be separated by distance or
time-they simply wait for the one they love to return.
