Section B What can festivals bring us?
( 3a~3c)
Unit 1 Let’s celebrate!
At the end of the class, we are able to:
1. read Jason’s letter and find out key information about the Carnival (name, time, place, activities, participants, and purpose).
2. use the 5W1H questions to organize information and write a letter to introduce our favourite festival, following Jason’s letter as a model.
3. compare the Carnival with a Chinese festival and create our own letter to share Chinese festival culture with a foreign friend.
Learning Objectives
Jason, a Brazilian exchange student, is celebrating the Carnival with his people in his hometown.
He wants to share his joy with his Chinese classmate Binbin, so he sits down at the desk and begins to write a letter to Binbin.
3a Read the letter and find out where Jason is.
Dear Binbin,
How are you? I miss China, but I am happy to be back home in Brazil. It is February, so I am enjoying the Carnival in my hometown, Rio de Janeiro. This is my favourite festival. It is also one of the biggest carnivals in the world. During this time, we have hundreds of street parties all over the city.
The most important celebrations take place in the streets along the beach. You can see parades everywhere for days. A very traditional dance is the samba. Many dance schools in Rio prepare their own shows for the Carnival. We have a special place for these shows. It is like a huge stadium where the school groups can perform. Here you will hear people playing beautiful music and see them dancing in fantastic costumes.
This festival is so important for Brazil. It brings everyone together to celebrate the colourful culture and way of life.
I hope that you’ll come and experience this with me one day.
Best wishes,
Jason

This festival falls on the first day of the first lunar month and usually lasts for fifteen days. On New Year’s Eve, all my family members gather at my grandparents’ home to have a big reunion dinner. We enjoy delicious food, set off fireworks, and give red envelopes to the younger children. What I love most is sticking couplets on the doors, which are believed to bring good luck.
