Tom: The summer holiday is coming! I am so excited.
Jerry: Me too! I want to travel to the beach, but my parents want me to stay home and study.
Tom: That’s a pity. I think you should talk to them because good relaxation is also important for study.

4c Read the passage. Count and write the number of each type of sentence. What other stories about the Mid- Autumn Festival do you know?
Chinese people celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. It is a time to reunite with family members. On that night, people admire the full moon and eat mooncakes. Mooncakes are traditional Chinese snacks in the shape of a full moon. They are symbols of reunion and show people’s best wishes for the family and friends they love and miss.
There are many traditional stories about this festival. One is about Chang’e flying to the moon. In this story, a hero called Houyi received magic medicine as a gift. Anyone who took this medicine could live forever. Houyi planned to share it with his beautiful wife, whose name was Chang’e. However, a bad man tried to steal it, so Chang’e took all the medicine to protect it. Suddenly, she became very light, and she flew up to the moon! It is said that Chang’e has lived on the moon since then. How she wished to be reunited with her family again!

Simple Sentence
Contains just one complete idea (an independent clause). It always has a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought on its own.
Compound Sentence
Joins two or more complete ideas using a comma and a coordinating conjunction (remember FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So).
Complex Sentence
Combines one complete idea with one or more dependent (incomplete) clauses, linked by subordinating conjunctions like when, because, if, or although.
Remember: Using a variety of these sentence structures makes your writing flow better, keeps readers engaged, and adds power and sophistication to your expression!
Summary
1.7.2013
Let's wrap up what we've learned today. We have three main sentence types: simple, compound, and complex. A simple sentence is one idea. A compound sentence joins two ideas with FANBOYS. A complex sentence has a main idea and a dependent idea. The key takeaway is to use a mix of these sentences to make your English more engaging and expressive.
