Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.
It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.
“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”
Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.
Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”
19. Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?
A. To remember the birth of jazz.
B. To protect cultural diversity.
C. To encourage people to study music.
D. To recognize the value of jazz.
20. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Jazz becoming more accessible.
B. The production of jazz growing faster.
C. Jazz being less popular with the young.
D. The jazz audience becoming larger.
21. What can we infer about Moran’s opinion on jazz?
A. It will disappear gradually.
B. It remains black and white.
C. It should keep up with the times.
D. It changes every 50 years.
22. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Exploring the Future of Jazz.
B. The Rise and Fall of Jazz.
C. The Story of a Jazz Musician.
D. Celebrating the Jazz Day.
【答案】19. D 20. C 21. C 22. A

When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year, I don’t usually know how to reply. Of course I, as most people do, want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I’m hoping for something different.
Through the course of my school life, I’ve developed a new understanding of the word “prioritization(优先次序)” little by little. The first thing I wish to get in Senior 1 is the ability to manage my time better. I’ll surely become busier with the coming term, and proper organization is important. From school clubs to academic competitions, everything should be set up in a way that doesn’t influence my health, which leads me to my second goal.
My mother has always told me to put my health first, so in the future, I hope to be both physically and mentally(精神上) healthy. A person can’t study without having the energy to do so. In order to stay energetic, they must put their health first, no matter how busy they are, or how much work they have to complete.
And finally, I hope that I won’t be discouraged by my failures and never give up on my dreams. I hope that I’ll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal is similar to every student’s goal around the world. We should all respect one another’s likes and dislikes, and focus on each other’s strengths, not our weaknesses. Everyone should strive(努力) to take part in all of life’s chances.
Albert Einstein once said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” In my case, it’s the other way around. In order to keep moving, I must keep my balance—the balance between studies and activities, academics and health, likes and dislikes. The new journey is going to be a hard one, but if I set these goals, I believe I will make it through to the end.
23. What does the author hope to do during this school year?
A. Learn how to manage her time well. B. Join as many school clubs as possible.
C. Focus on improving her overall grades. D. Spend more time on outdoor activities.
24. What should students do according to the article?
A. Always put their studies first. B. Don’t be afraid of failing.
C. Only do what they’re good at. D. Make different kinds of friends.
25. What is the author’s purpose of writing this article?
A. To show what she likes about high school life.
B. To show the importance of health to students.
C. To show how to balance our studies and activities.
D. To share her goals for the coming high school year.
【答案】23. A 24. B 25. D

【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“And finally, I hope that I won’t be discouraged by my failure and never give up on my dreams. I hope that I’ll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal can apply to every student around the world.(最后,我希望我不会因为我的失败而气馁,永远不放弃我的梦想。我希望我将有勇气尝试新的活动和俱乐部。我相信我的最终目标可以适用于世界上的每一个学生。) ”可知,作者最后一个希望是自己不再惧怕失败,勇于尝试新事物,并且认为这适用于全世界每个学生。故选B。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year, I don’t usually know how to reply. Of course I, as most people do, want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I’m hoping for something different.(当有人问我来年的目标是什么时,我通常不知道该如何回答。当然,和大多数人一样,我也希望自己的成绩有所提高。然而,今年我希望能有一些不同的东西。)”可知,作者要分享她在新的一年里希望除了学习进步外,有一些不一样,后面全文详细介绍了她接下来的高中生活中的目标:提高自己管理时间的能力;保持身心健康;不怕失败,尝试新的事情。故选D。

【30题详解】
上文“After you’ve tried a new method for a week, take a look at your record.(在你尝试了一个星期的新方法之后,看看你的记录。)”指出我们在尝试新方法后,要自己做好记录同时进行评估,下文“If not, take another look at other methods you could try.(如果没有,再看看其他你可以尝试的方法。)”
