Mark Twain’s words strike a deep chord (心弦) with writers, “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” This quote shows the tiring process of rewriting a novel. The first draft feels like an exciting first date — full of promise and relaxation. You finish with a broad smile, imagining readers applauding your brilliance.
But that honeymoon period lasts only about 48 hours. Soon, the sinking feeling sets in as you revisit your draft, realizing the hard part has just begun. Rewriting is where real writers emerge. It’s time to dig deep, pulling out the tools and techniques you’ve gathered over the years. You revisit your favorite authors, hoping they’ll offer guidance for navigating the rocky road of revision.
Rewriting demands you comb through each sentence, ensuring it contains the exact right word. Every character must earn its place in the story, and each chapter should contribute meaningfully to the narrative. Even your beloved pieces of dialogue may need to be cut.
I learned this while working on my novel. The rewriting process haunted (萦绕) me, and I often questioned if the effort was worth it. One night, nearing 2 a.m. after an exhausting session, I thought about abandoning my work. That’s when I came across the film In Time, which highlighted my deepest fear: the time invested in my novel. At that moment, I struck a deal with myself. I decided to cease the self-criticism and recapture the joy that fueled my writing. I committed to evaluating my work page by page, asking, “Do I love it?” If not, I replaced it.
Here’s my advice: reawaken your passion and examine your work one page at a time. Writing is a journey, and the rewriting period bridges inspiration and a satisfying finished product. Remember, the “right word” is the key to excellence.
24. What do Mark Twain’s words imply?
A. Revising is a rocky road. B. Readers’ feeling matters.
C. Quoting precisely is a must. D. The first draft rarely falls short.
25. What does the author think of rewriting?
A. Time-wasting. B. Labor-saving. C. Heartbreaking. D. Painstaking.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Which word should be highlighted. B. Why the writing process is questioned.
C. What the film In Time talks about. D. How the passion for rewriting is fueled.
27. What does the author’s advice show?
A. The role of inspiration in writing.
B. The importance of proper wording.
C. The reason for making rewriting unique.
D. The journey to creating an excellent product.
【答案】24. A 25. D 26. D 27. B

Nearly 30% of U. S. children have a diagnosed allergy (过敏), suffering from symptoms such as hives, sneezing, or even life-threatening anaphylaxis. Large studies have confirmed that introducing potential food allergens within the first year of life significantly minimizes the danger of developing allergies later.
A decade ago, doctors recommended delaying common food allergens until after the first few years. This view changed in 2015 when the LEAP study provided strong evidence that introducing peanuts to infants (婴儿) around four months old can lower peanut allergy risk by up to 80%. Follow-up studies on eggs, cow’s milk, and multiple common allergens showed similar benefits. Today, experts strongly recommend early introduction. Priya Katari, a pediatric allergist, suggests introducing all common allergens — egg, milk, soy, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, and sesame — at four to six months of age, when the child can sit upright and swallow safely without choking.
This recommendation applies to most children, including those with a family history of allergies. However, there are two exceptions: children with severe eczema should be tested for allergies before food introduction, and children with a known egg allergy should be tested especially before trying peanut butter. Otherwise, serious reactions after first exposure are rare in infants under one year, though possible. Parents can start with a tiny amount, such as a quarter-teaspoon of thinned peanut butter, monitor for ten minutes, and then offer a full serving of two teaspoons.
Once introduced, the allergen must remain in the child’s diet regularly. Peanut currently has specific guidelines: two teaspoons three times a week. Experts agree that just a taste may not build tolerance; taking them at a regular basis is essential. Parents need not worry about exact amounts but should ensure a varied diet including fruits, vegetables, and protein. As Martha Hartz from Mayo Clinic advises, “Whenever you introduce solid food, go ahead and introduce whatever your family eats.”
28. What can be inferred about the LEAP study?
A. It suggested delaying all allergens. B. It focused mainly on eggs and milk.
C. It overturned previous medical advice. D. It was the first study on food allergies.
29. Which group needs allergy tests before food introduction?
A. Children with family allergy history. B. Children already exposed to peanuts.
C. Children who can sit upright and swallow. D. Children with severe eczema or egg allergy.
30. What do experts suggest about maintaining tolerance?
A. Regular exposure is vital. B. Exact amounts matter most.
C. A single taste is enough for life. D. Peanut butter should be avoided.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Infants should avoid peanuts until age three.
B. Early introduction reduces the risks of allergies.
C. Delaying allergens until after the first year is advised.
D. Allergy tests are required for children before solid foods.
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. A 31. B

D
The ability to detect a nearby presence without seeing or touching it may sound fantastical — but it’s a real ability that some creatures have. A family of African fish known as Mormyrids are weakly electric, and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modelled on the ability of these fish.
“We developed a new strategy for 3D motion positioning by electronic skin, bio-inspired by ‘electric fish’,” says Dr. Xinge Yu, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. The team described their e-skin sensor in a paper published on November 14 in Nature.
The artificial sensor is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter (发射器), which will generate an electric field once activated, and another layer acts as a receiver to detect both the direction and the distance to an object. A separate controller creates the driving signal to activate the transmitter. When an object comes within range, the electric field around the sensor is disrupted (扰乱), which in turn can be detected by the receiver. This data is then processed by a microcontroller unit, which computes the position of the target object and sends that information to a smartphone or other devices.
A special biogel (生物凝胶) is used in the sensor, which has the ability to transmit and receive electric signals from a pattern of microchannels on the surface. The end result is a sensor that is thin, soft and flexible, making it cosy to adapt to irregular surfaces, such as the human body. In contrast to the traditional sensor system that needs a large number of sensors to achieve spatial positioning, the new system can locate an object precisely in 3D space using just a few sensors. This significantly reduces the power consumption of data collection, transmission, and processing.
The researchers hope that this sensor could one day open up a new range of wearable technologies, including sensors for human-machine interaction and thin, flexible e-skin.
32. The first paragraph aims to show __________.
A. the special ability of African fish

Defensive Walking and Cycling: Key Tips for Safety
You’ve heard of defensive driving, or driving practices to help you stay safe on the road. But what about defensive walking and cycling? They are equally crucial for pedestrian (行人) and cyclist safety. It means paying attention to your surroundings and having a constant awareness of the environment. ____36____ With thousands of pedestrians and cyclists killed annually in traffic crashes, being alert to hidden danger of traffic is a key part of preventing accidents. Here are the essential do’s and don’ts.
Do’s:
Look left, right and behind you.
Oftentimes the greatest dangers if you’re a pedestrian trying to cross the crossroads are actually coming from behind you. ____37____ A driver turning into the crossroads might not see you in the crosswalk because they’re focused on oncoming traffic.
____38____
Most pedestrian deaths occur after dark. Always use sidewalks or walking paths. Cyclists should use white front lights and red rear lights at night. Even with the right of way, try to make eye contact with drivers or look for signs that they see you, like slowing down.
Don’ts:
Don’t be distracted while biking or walking, especially while crossing the road.
____39____ You need to hear the sounds of traffic and see what’s happening around you to stay safe and cross the road smoothly.
Don’t put yourself in danger just because you have the right of way.
While drivers are responsible for driving safely, road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Decades of data show that expecting people to always act the right way on the road does not work. ____40____
A. Make yourself visible and predictable.
B. Be aware of the danger of hanging out at night.
C. In this way, you can anticipate potential danger.
D. Avoid listening to music or looking at your phone.
E. So always look in all directions and turn around before walking forward.
F. Taking ownership of your safety helps create a safe system that protects everyone.
G. Your own safety is actually determined by the rights to choose whatever directions you can.

【答案】Ranking My Career Choice Essentials
When choosing a future career, I rank the three key factors in this order: interest and passion, salary and self-development, and social recognition and expectations.
Firstly, passion is the core driving force. It keeps us motivated to overcome difficulties and stick to our career long-term. Secondly, salary and self-development matter greatly. While a salary that is decent can guarantee our life quality, constant self-improvement is what sustains long-term career growth. Lastly, I put social recognition last. As far as I can remember, I’ve always been a night owl. Even in middle school I would stay up very late. I would feel completely at ease doing my homework in bed, with light music on. I found comfort in keeping myself awake when everyone else had gone to bed, and I loved the silence of the night. My parents urged me to get out of this so-called unhealthy habit, but their repeated requests fell on deaf ears.
Fast forward to my first year of college. I still loved the night and would stay up until unruly hours for no apparent reason, chatting online and watching videos. When I finally started to study, I would race through the assigned work, often well past midnight. My roommates would tell me to go to bed and get up early the following morning to do it instead. Get up early to do my homework? No way! I would never do that.
Then, one day last term, I did exactly that. Bent over my laptop while sitting on the bed in the corner of my room, I suddenly felt a pounding headache, and had to lie down. Unable to keep my eyes open, I decided I had no choice but to finish my homework the next morning. I woke up at 6am. Hardly had I written half a page when I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
At the school clinic, a doctor, with a serious expression on his face, handed me a medical report. “You’re 20, but your heart is 40!” he said. A cold wave went through me. I realized that years of living as a late-night person had turned my heart into an overworked engine.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Struck by the doctor’s warning, I knew I had to make a change. That very night, I initiated my battle against my deep-rooted habits. I forcibly switched off my laptop and phone at 10 p.m., placing them completely out of reach. However, my rebellious biological clock refused to cooperate. I tossed and turned in the darkness, the silence of the room amplifying my anxiety. The urge to grab my phone and drown in videos was overwhelmingly tempting. Just as my willpower was about to crumble, the doctor's stern voice and that terrifying sharp pain in my chest echoed in my mind, anchoring me back to reality. I squeezed my eyes shut, practicing deep breathing until exhaustion finally claimed me.
Slowly but surely, my efforts to adjust to the new routine paid off. The mornings, which used to be my greatest enemy, gradually transformed into a welcoming friend. Instead of racing through assignments with a foggy brain at midnight, I found myself tackling them with a clear and focused mind in the golden sunlight. Not only did the heavy burden on my chest vanish, but an unprecedented sense of vitality also flowed through my veins. When I proudly showed my parents my improved medical report during the holiday, their relieved smiles were my best reward. I finally realized that true comfort isn't found in the unruly hours of the night, but in the vibrant rhythm of a disciplined life.

B. the inspiration for a new invention
C. the big challenge of locating objects
D. the reason for developing a sensor
33. What is the correct order of the system’s working procedures?
a. The transmitter creates an electric field.
b. A unit computes the position of the target.
c. The controller sends the activating signal.
d. The receiver detects the change of electric signals.
e. The electric field is disrupted by an approaching object.
A. c-a-e-d-b. B. c-a-d-e-b.
