B In the scientific world, where the focus is on data and results, it’s easy to overlook the human aspect, which I think is crucial for a fruitful research environment. In my laboratory at the University of Lausanne, we turn to a simple technique to enhance our group’s connectedness: the flashlight method (手电筒法). This straightforward method of passing a virtual flashlight around the room during our weekly lab meetings has brought about a huge shift in how we all interact. Here’s how it works for us: I turn on the flashlight by randomly calling someone’s name, and after sharing their thoughts for about 30 to 60 seconds, they name the next person at random until everyone has had their turn. It’s called a flashlight because the idea is to shine the spotlight on each person in a group. The team member with the flashlight shares something from the past week, or the one to come — this could be a breakthrough in their project, a professional achievement, or even something from their personal life. Initially, my lab members and I were unsure how the flashlight method would turn out. Would it be too informal? Would it take time away from our scientific discussions? But, to our delight, the results have been wonderful. The flashlight has opened up our meetings and the random nature of it has kept everyone engaged. The increased participation has led to a more comprehensive understanding of each other’s research and challenges as we all work towards our team’s goal — to understand the complexities of cancer. When someone talks about a tough experiment or shares their excitement about a surprising result, it sets off discussions and uncovers fresh views. I’ve found that, sometimes, the simplest method can bring about the most effective changes. The flashlight method might seem like a small addition to the meeting agenda but, for us, it has been transformative. It’s about more than just sharing updates; it’s about creating a space where everyone feels valued and connected. And in the fast-paced, often high-pressure scientific research environment, this sense of belonging and understanding can make all the difference. 4. What aspect does the author consider important in a scientific study? A. The group dynamics. B. The scientific breakthrough. C. The fair working environment. D. The availability of modern techniques. 5. What can we know about the flashlight method? A. It replaces traditional meeting agendas. B. It is centered on individual contributions. C. It encourages people to share ideas at random. D. It allows people to work in a virtual environment. 6. What may the author and his team be working on? A. Computer science. B. Medical research. C. Psychological tests. D. Business management. 7. What may the author think of the flashlight method? A. It is environment-specific. B. It is a temporary success. C. It is far from practical. D. It deserves promotion. C Nearly everyone has fun on a carousel (旋转木马)— including, possibly, fruit flies. Scientists observed some flies riding on a spinning platform voluntarily and repeatedly, suggesting the animals may find the movement appealing for some reason, according to a recent study. Sergio Pellis, a behavioral scientist, notes that it would add to the small but growing pile of evidence for play in invertebrates (无脊椎动物). Co-author Wolf Huetteroth remembers one day accidentally seeing a lone duck floating down a fast-moving river. It flew back upriver and floated back down — over and over again. “I never stopped wondering what motivated the duck to perform such curious behavior,” he says. Later, when Huetteroth attended a conference where researchers were discussing whether insects can act with intention, he considered testing whether flies would do something similar to the rapids-running duck. He and his colleague Tilman Triphan then decided to build a carousel of sorts. They offered male laboratory fruit flies the chance to jump onto a spinning section of the floor in a stress-free environment. He didn’t think the flies would actually go for it. “My expectations were extremely low,” he says. It turned out that some of the flies ignored the setup, but a small group of them acted as if they’d just discovered Disneyland. Triphan and Huetteroth reported that the small group of the flies spent 5% or more of their time on the turning wheel. When the researchers put two disks that spun every 5 minutes by turns, some flies spent their time bouncing back and forth between whichever carousel was spinning. Fruit flies are excellent spatial learners, Huetteroth notes, so if they didn’t like to spin, they could have simply avoided the disks. Were the flies riding the carousels playing? “It’s certainly possible,” Pellis says. Still, Huetteroth was hesitant to claim that; after all, the flies didn’t reveal what stimulated them to spin. However, to Pellis, even invertebrates, like the flies, could be experiencing something similar to what we feel when we ride a carousel. “The next steps in solving this riddle may come from studying the flies’ brain activity involved in the carousel behavior,” Huetteroth adds. 8. What motivated Wolf Huetteroth to study fruit flies? A. A previous study on the behavior of ducks. B. A duck’s repetitive and intentional behavior. C. Encouragement from researchers at a conference. D. Personal experiences with insects in everyday life. 9. What did the researchers find amazing during their experiment? A. The flies showed a great sense of spatial awareness. B. Some flies reacted negatively to the spinning platform. C. The platform was much more successful than expected. D. Some flies were enthusiastic about the spinning platform. 10. What is Huetteroth likely to further investigate? A. The motivation behind the flies’ carousel behavior. B. The impact of flies’ carousel behavior on their brain. C. The social interactions among flies on the carousel. D. The environmental factors affecting the flies’ enjoyment. 11. Which can be the best title for the text? A. Invertebrates might have a good command of spatial skills B. Fruit flies can engage in a series of repetitive actions C. Fruit flies may enjoy taking carousels for a spin D. Invertebrates are much smarter than expected D A team of computer scientists has created a more flexible type of machine language learning model. The AI language engines in use are mostly powered by artificial neural (神经的) networks. AI researchers can create a language model by training the networks. Through training, the information flow between neurons (神经元) improves as the networks adapt to the training data. However, if you want to create a model for two languages, you have to erase the building blocks of words — tokens (标记) — stored in the first layer of the neural networks, called the embedding layer. After erasing the tokens of the first language, you could retrain the model with the second language. The retraining was quite demanding, so researchers suggested a new technique called the periodic-forgetting approach: They periodically reset the first layer during the initial round of training. By doing this, the entire model became used to resetting and through selectively forgetting some of its knowledge, it could better learn new languages. The researchers took a commonly used language model called RoBERTa, trained it using their periodic-forgetting technique, and compared it to the same model’s performance when it was trained with the standard approach. The forgetting model did slightly worse. Then they retrained the models on other languages, using much smaller datasets of only 5 million tokens, rather than the 70 billion they used during the first training. The accuracy of the standard model decreased to 53.3 on average, but the forgetting model dropped only to 62.7. The team concluded that periodic forgetting and relearning during training sessions enable language models to achieve a deeper level of understanding of languages, beyond just knowing the meanings of individual words. The approach is akin to how our own brains work. “Human memory in general is not very good at accurately storing large amounts of detailed information, but humans tend to remember the main point of our experiences,” said Benjamin Levy, a neuroscientist. Yihong Chen, the lead author of the paper, looks forward to a world where more AI flowers appear. “I’m thinking of a situation where the world doesn’t need one big language model. We have so many,” she said. “If there’s a factory making language models, you need this kind of technique. It has one base model that can quickly adapt to new domains.” 12. How does the new technique improve the language model for two languages? A. By resetting the embedding layer regularly. B. By improving the efficiency of data input. C. By expanding the tokens from another language. D. By updating the information flow between neurons. 13. Why did the researchers use RoBERTa in their research? A. To facilitate the operation of their model. B. To test the performance of their new technique. C. To extend the general application of language models. D. To find out the drawbacks of the commonly used model. 14. What does the underlined phrase “is akin to” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Be beneficial for. B. Be reliable to. C. Be similar to. D. Be contrary to. 15. What does Yihong Chen expect of the new technique? A. It’ll change the way AI systems work. B. It’ll transform the computational capabilities of AI. C. It’ll help make language models be mass-produced. D. It’ll bring about more language models for various needs. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 During low-intensity and moderate-intensity exercise (such as walking and cycling), we tend to breathe in through our noses and out through our mouths. Most of us would assume breathing through the mouth is the best technique to use during intense exercise (such as running), as it allows more oxygen to reach our muscles. ____16____ Studies have shown that when exercising at different intensities, less oxygen is used when breathing through the nose compared to breathing through the mouth. ____17____ Think of oxygen like fuel for cars. The more miles per gallon of fuel a car covers, the better its “fuel economy” is. Likewise, the less oxygen used per footstep, the less energy a person uses. This means you can run further without becoming tired quickly. Researchers also suggest that breathing through your nose increases the production of nitric oxide (一氧化氮), which benefits the body in several ways. It enhances oxygen delivery to the lungs and muscles by lowering blood pressure and facilitating better blood flow. ____18____ While these all sound incredibly encouraging, there is some negativity to be aware of. ____19____ If you introduce it without training first, it could lead to “air hunger” — a process whereby a small amount of carbon dioxide is retained (保留) at the end of each breath. This can cause discomfort and overbreathing. As with anything, practice makes perfect. ____20____ Try and relax into the process. Ensure your tongue is at the top of your mouth, as this relaxes the jaw and face muscles making it easier to draw a deep breath through your nose. You can also alternate between breathing through your nose and your mouth until you get more used to breathing only through your nose. A. But evidence shows the contrary. B. This may not be suitable for other types of exercise. C. It may also provide protection against airborne viruses. D. When learning to breathe through the nose, don’t force air in. E. Be sure to breathe through your nose while running next time. F. Breathing only through the nose during exercise is a learned process. G. This could be a real advantage in line with the economy of movement. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Downtown Albany was as busy as usual that stormy January day last year, with no place to park on the street. The board sat before me, including some high-school teachers with whom I was not familiar, except for one, Mr. Timmons. He had been my English teacher for two years. Mr. Timmons had a warm smile and genuinely cared for his students. From the first day of my high school year, I knew I’d enjoy his class. It didn’t take him long to discover my love of literature. He was impressed that I chose to read the Iliad in my free time. As I progressed and we discussed what I was learning from Shakespeare, Mr. Timmons realized my appreciation of different literary works and began suggesting other books he thought I would like. Life took an unexpected turn when my father lost his job, placing large pressure on our family’s finances. Shortly after, my grandfather’s passing away plunged (使陷入) us into great sorrow and hardship. My father turned to alcohol to cope, leaving me to shoulder the responsibility of caring for my family. With no time for reading, I even considered leaving school to find work and assist my mother in supporting the family. When I attended Mr. Timmons’ class, I told him about my circumstances and plans. In a soft voice, Mr. Timmons responded, “I’m sorry for what you are going through. I’m here to support you. I will provide you with material assistance so you can help your family and continue your studies. Remember, never give up on your dreams.” His words warmed my heart. “I won’t,” I promised. Guided by his care and encouragement, I continued my love for literature and committed myself to studying. Mr. Timmons became both my mentor (导师) and my friend, offering great support when I ran into difficulties. He listened attentively and nurtured my passion for writing. With his help, my grades steadily improved, and I emerged as an exceptional student. Soon it was graduation time. 【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. Invertebrates are much smarter than expected 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. G. Paragraph 1: As graduation approached, the school announced a competition to select the student speaker. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Despite my adequate preparation, I was ultimately not chosen as the speaker. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Paragraph 1: As graduation approached, the school announced a competition to select the student speaker. After several revisions, I felt confident that I had captured the essence of what I wanted to convey. I eagerly anticipated the day of the competition. Paragraph 2: Despite my adequate preparation, I was ultimately not chosen as the speaker. Mr. Timmons, true to his supportive nature, pulled me aside after the results were announced. His genuine smile and familiar warmth filled me with a sense of pride. “Your words had already touched many hearts, including mine,” he said softly. “Remember, success isn’t always about winning contests. It’s about the impact you make along the way.” Inspired by his words, I decided to continue using my voice, whether through writing or speaking, to inspire and impact others. 词类激活 行为类 ①放弃:give up/quit ②记住:remember/keep in mind 情绪类 ①自信的:confident/assured ②热切地:eagerly/keenly 【点睛】【高分句型1】Therefore, I signed up for it and poured my heart into crafting a speech that not only reflected my personal journey but also expressed my gratitude to Mr. Timmons.(运用了that引导定语从句以及“not only...but also...”连接并列结构) 【高分句型2】Inspired by his words, I decided to continue using my voice, whether through writing or speaking, to inspire and impact others.(运用了过去分词短语作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
