Artemisinin has saved hundreds of thousands of lives, and has led to improved health for millions of people. Over 200 million people around the world get malaria each year, and about 600,000 die from it. Artemisinin has become a vital part of the treatment for malaria, and is thought to save 100,000 lives a year in Africa alone. While-reading Paragraph 1 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine 诺贝尔生理学或医学奖 be awarded to sb 被授予某人 co‑winner n. 至关重要的 die from 死于(外因、疾病) be thought to do… 仅仅,只(放在名词后) Conclusion Tu Youyou, a committed and patient scientist, was born in Ningbo, China, on 30 December 1930, and graduated from Peking University Medical School in 1955. After she graduated, she worked at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing. In 1967, the Chinese government formed a team of scientists with the objective of discovering a new treatment for malaria, and Tu Youyou was among the first researchers chosen. In the beginning, Tu Youyou went to Hainan, where malaria was more common, to study malaria patients. While-reading Paragraph 2 In 1969, she became the head of the project in Beijing, and decided to review ancient Chinese medical texts to find traditional botanical treatments for the disease. Her team examined over 2, 000 old medical texts, and evaluated 280, 000 plants for their medical properties. From their research, they discovered and tested 380 distinct ancient Chinese medical treatments that showed promise in the fight against malaria. Paragraph 2 While-reading Conclusion where 引导非限制性定语从句:went to Hainan, where malaria was more common that 引导定语从句:380 distinct treatments that showed promise in… graduate from 毕业于 with the objective of doing 以…… 为目标 in the beginning 起初 become the head of the project 成为项目负责人 review ancient Chinese medical texts 查阅古代中医文献 evaluate 评估(280,000 plants 28 万种植物) show promise in… 方面有希望 in the fight against malaria 抗击疟疾 One medical text from the fourth century suggested using the extract from sweet wormwood to treat a fever. Tu’s team tested a collection of dried wormwood leaves but found no effect. They then tried boiling fresh wormwood, and using the liquid obtained from this to treat malaria, but this did not work either. Their project got stuck. While-reading Paragraph 3 However, Tu Youyou would not acknowledge defeat. She analysed the medical texts again, and by chance, she found one sentence suggesting a different way to treat the wormwood. She concluded that boiling the sweet wormwood apparently destroyed its medical properties. While-reading Paragraph 3 Conclusion suggest doing sth:suggested using the extract from sweet wormwood(建议做某事;注意不是 suggest sb to do) 现在分词作状语:Using a lower temperature to draw out the extract, she found…(方式状语) medical text 医学文献(the fourth century 四世纪) dried wormwood leaves 干青蒿叶 get stuck 陷入困境 acknowledge defeat 承认失败(would not 不肯) by chance 偶然,碰巧 draw out the extract 提取出提取物 medical properties 药用特性 Using a lower temperature to draw out the extract, she found a substance that worked. After failing more than 190 times, the team finally succeeded in 1971. Tu Youyou and her team members even insisted on testing the medicine on themselves to make sure that it was safe. Later, the medicine was tested on malaria patients, most of whom recovered. This medicine, which was called artemisinin, soon became a standard treatment for malaria. Paragraph 4 While-reading Conclusion After doing 作状语:After failing more than 190 times, the team succeeded(介词 + 动名词) most of whom 引导非限制性定语从句:malaria patients, most of whom recovered(介词 + 关系代词) which 引导非限制性定语从句:This medicine, which was called artemisinin,… eventually /finally 最终 insist on doing sth 坚持做某事 test… on themselves 在自己身上测试 make sure that… According to Tu Youyou, the discovery of artemisinin was a team effort. Upon hearing that she had been awarded the Nobel Prize, she said, “The honour is not just mine. There is a team behind me, and all the people of my country. This success proves the great value of traditional Chinese medicine. It is indeed an honour for China’s scientific research and Chinese medicine to be spread around the world.” Paragraph 5 While-reading Conclusion upon/on doing 一…… 就……:Upon hearing that she had been awarded…(=As soon as she heard) it 作形式主语:It is indeed an honour for China's scientific research… to be spread around the world(it 指代后面的不定式) a team effort 团队努力的结果 prove the great value of… 的巨大价值 scientific research 科学研究 be spread around the world 传播到世界各地 According to 根据 Post-reading Discussion Discuss in groups of four. What qualities made Tu Youyou successful? (patient? committed? persistent?) Why does Tu Youyou say "The honour is not just mine"? What can we learn from her team's spirit of self-testing? Is traditional Chinese medicine valuable today? Give your reasons. Thanks for listening Lavf58.46.101 $
