Recently, a woman noticed an unfamiliar woodpecker (啄木鸟). Curious, she fished out her phone and soon got the answer on her phone app. Scientists usually regard curiosity as motivation for discovering new information and learning, noting people tend to seek answers quickly. Previous research showed that when given a choice, people generally opted for the fastest path to resolution. But this picture of curiosity is incomplete. In a study published, the researchers explored whether there are multiple forms of curiosity. More than 2,000 people aged 19 to 76 years were asked to watch a series of short videos, each starting with a blank screen. A line would then appear, gradually taking shape. While the participants watched each video, they were asked to assess their level of inquiring mind about the final form of the drawing, on a scale of 1 to 100. Their responses enabled the researchers to evaluate how curiosity shifted with the unfolding content. Participants were also offered two options: follow the slow progress of the drawing or skip straight to the ending to see the complete image at once. The research found that although natural curiosity can indeed drive an urgent desire for answers, it can also generate more patience, setting people up for moments of discovery. Participants with higher levels of curiosity about the final shape tended to follow its gradual development instead of skipping to the answer. The study underlines the complexity of curiosity, opening new ways for further research. “Considering curiosity as going beyond the need for quick answers also highlights the power of what happens when we engage with uncertainty: pondering (深思) and anticipating answers can improve learning and memory,” said Rooth Moran, leader of the study. “Learning new things can be tough, but taking advantage of curiosity can help us enjoy the process of learning and delight in overcoming challenges as we work out a mystery.” 1.What do scientists generally believe about curiosity? A.It makes people entirely impatient. B.It quickens people’s pursuit of answers. C.It slows people’s pace of making discoveries. D.It forces people to make an immediate decision. 2.How was participants’ curiosity measured in the study? A.By scoring their inner desire. B.By recording their watching times. C.By comparing their watching speeds. D.By observing their instant responses. 3.What is the major finding of the research? A.Less curiosity, more patience. B.Less curiosity, fewer discoveries. C.Curiosity strong, process favored. D.Curiosity strong, result prioritized. 4.What are Rooth Moran’s remarks about? A.The value of curiosity in learning. B.The hidden reasons behind curiosity. C.The way to make the most of curiosity. D.The difficulty in overcoming curiosity. 根据第二段“Scientists usually regard curiosity as motivation for discovering new information and learning, noting people tend to seek answers quickly.(科学家通常把好奇心视作发掘新信息与开展学习的动力,指出人们倾向于快速寻找答案。)” 根据第三段“While the participants watched each video, they were asked to assess their level of inquiring mind about the final form of the drawing, on a scale of 1 to 100.(参与者观看每一段视频时,研究人员要求他们按照1到100分的分值,评估自己对于图案最终形态的好奇程度。)” 根据第四段“Participants with higher levels of curiosity about the final shape tended to follow its gradual development instead of skipping to the answer.(对最终图案好奇心更强的参与者,往往选择观察图案逐步成型,而不是直接跳到结果。)” 根据最后一段““Considering curiosity as going beyond the need for quick answers also highlights the power of what happens when we engage with uncertainty: pondering (深思) and anticipating answers can improve learning and memory,” said Rooth Moran, leader of the study. “Learning new things can be tough, but taking advantage of curiosity can help us enjoy the process of learning and delight in overcoming challenges as we work out a mystery.”(该研究负责人Rooth Moran表示:“把好奇心视作超越快速获取答案需求的事物,这一点同样凸显了我们面对未知时所产生事物的作用:深思和预判答案可以提升学习效果与记忆力。学习新事物或许很难,但利用好奇心可以帮助我们享受学习的过程,并且在解开谜团的过程中,因克服挑战而感到愉悦。”)”可知,Rooth Moran的话阐述好奇心在学习当中具备的价值。 七、七选五 (25-26高二下·江西宜春·期末)The majority of people make an assumption that the human brain learns all by itself. But the truth is that to some extent, we can train ourselves to be better learners. 1 These kinds of learning behaviours are called “active learning”. Here are a bunch of guidelines to become active learners. Follow the outer voice We all have two voices. Our inner voice expresses our personal opinions, while the outer voice handles others’ opinions. Although our inner voice can be useful, it can also block us from learning. If we pay too much attention to it, we risk missing important information while learning. Instead, active learners are open-minded and focus on what the speaker/writer is saying, not on what their brain is saying. 2 Debate with the inner voice If we find it a struggle to control our inner voice, we can disagree with it as most active learners do. When our inner voice tells us a speaker/writer is wrong, think about why the speaker/writer may be right. 3 If not, at least we have “listened to” another viewpoint. Ask questions One of the easiest ways to promote active learning is to ask questions. When we obtain information from someone, from books or the Internet, ask a series of questions about the topic. 4 In short, we should never stop being curious. Seek the truth Active learners make an attempt to question the world around them and get to the truth deep within each idea. Even when an idea sounds insane, there may be an aspect of it rooted in truth. No matter how crazy it seems, we will increase our chance of learning something. 5 Many people let learning opportunities slip because they ignore what is said because of who the speaker/writer is. But active learners don’t judge people on the basis of first impressions. Instead, they separate the message from the messenger. A.In this manner, they are in a better position to make decisions. B.Concentrate your attention on the message itself. C.Be flexible in our opinions and we might end up agreeing with the speaker/writer after all. D.For example, we can stay active in the learning process and reflect on what we have learnt. E.I suggest doing a number of things to actively take part in our learning. F.Form opinions based on first impressions of messengers. G.The answers will lead us to further learning and help us gain a deeper understanding of the topic. 1.根据上文“But the truth is that to some extent, we can train ourselves to be better learners.(但事实是,在某种程度上,我们可以通过自我训练,成为更擅长学习的人。)”和下文“These kinds of learning behaviours are called “active learning”.(这类学习行为被称作“主动学习”)”可知,空处需要举例说明什么是主动学习行为,承接下文“these kinds of learning behaviours”。 2.上文“Instead, active learners are open-minded and focus on what the speaker/writer is saying, not on what their brain is saying.(相反,主动学习者思想开明,专注于说话人/作者所表达的内容,而非自己脑海里的杂念。)” 3.根据上文“When our inner voice tells us a speaker/writer is wrong, think about why the speaker/writer may be right.(当我们内心的声音告诉我们某个说话人/作者是错的时,不妨思考一下为什么对方可能是正确的。)”和下文“If not, at least we have “listened to” another viewpoint.(如果做不到这一点,至少我们已经“倾听”了另一种观点。)” 4.上文“One of the easiest ways to promote active learning is to ask questions.( 促进主动学习最简单的方法之一就是提问‌。)” 5.根据下文“Many people let learning opportunities slip because they ignore what is said because of who the speaker/writer is. But active learners don’t judge people on the basis of first impressions. Instead, they separate the message from the messenger.(很多人会白白错失学习机会:仅凭说话人或作者的身份,就忽视其传达的内容。但主动学习者不会仅凭第一印象评判他人。相反,他们能区分信息本身与传递信息的人。)”可知,本段主要讲述了很多人因说话人身份忽视内容;主动学习者不凭第一印象评判人,区分信息本身和传递信息的人。空处为本段小标题,概括段落核心:关注信息内容,而非传递者。B 选项“将注意力集中在信息本身。”符合语境。 (2023·新课标Ⅱ卷·高考真题)Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles. Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new. Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools. Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says. She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.” 1.What do we know about Abby Jaramillo? A.She used to be a health worker. B.She grew up in a low-income family. C.She owns a fast food restaurant. D.She is an initiator of Urban Sprouts. 2.What was a problem facing Jaramillo at the start of the program? A.The kids’ parents distrusted her. B.Students had little time for her classes. C.Some kids disliked garden work. D.There was no space for school gardens. 3.Which of the following best describes the impact of the program? A.Far-reaching. B.Predictable. C.Short-lived. D.Unidentifiable. 4.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Rescuing School Gardens B.Experiencing Country Life C.Growing Vegetable Lovers D.Changing Local Landscape 【答案】1.D 2.C 3.A 4.C 【导语】本文是记叙文。 根据第一段的“And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools.(起初是这样的,艾比·哈拉米洛说,她和另一位老师在四所低收入学校启动了“Urban Sprouts”学校花园项目。)” “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.(她说。“他们来找我们,认为蔬菜很可怕,泥土很可怕,昆虫也很可怕。”虽然有些人一开始害怕昆虫,对泥土感到厌烦,但大多数人都渴望尝试新的东西。)”可知,项目之初,一些学生不喜欢园艺工作。故选C。 3.推理判断题。根据最后一段“She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.”(她补充说,该计划的好处不仅仅是营养。有些学生对园艺非常感兴趣,他们带回家种子开始自己的菜园。此外,在花园里工作似乎对Jaramillo的特殊教育学生有镇静作用,他们中的许多人都有情绪控制问题。“他们走了出去,”她说,“他们觉得成功。”)”可知,这个项目不仅给学生提供了有营养的食物,而且许多学生回家开创了自己的菜园,对有情绪控制问题的学生也起到了镇静作用,从而推知,该项目的影响是深远的。故选A。 4. 根据第一段的“And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.(起初是这样的,艾比·哈拉米洛说,她和另一位老师在四所低收入学校启动了“Urban Sprouts”学校花园项目。该项目旨在帮助学生培养科学技能、环保意识和健康的生活方式。)”和最后一段的“Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens.(一些学生对园艺非常感兴趣,于是他们把种子带回家,开始种自己的菜园)”以及下文内容可知,文章主要讲述了Abby Jaramillo等老师在低收入学校发起的培养学生科学能力,环保意识以及健康生活方式的Urban Sprouts花园项目,让学生种植蔬菜,对学生影响深远。 Ranking My College Life Essentials ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Ranking My College Life Essentials When it comes to the key elements of college life, I rank study first, sleep second and socialize third for solid reasons. Undoubtedly, study tops the list because college serves as a vital platform where we build up professional knowledge and polish comprehensive abilities for our future. Meanwhile, enough sleep guarantees our physical health and keeps us mentally sharp. It lays a solid foundation for efficient study. (2023·新课标Ⅱ卷·高考真题)Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids.
