But Wang Zhenyi thought differently. She believed in facts and observations. In order to explain those“strange” events, she did some experiments. In one, she used a table as Earth, a lamp as the sun and a mirror as the moon. She moved them around to show what actually happens during a lunar eclipse: When the earth is passing directly between the sun and the moon, the sunlight cannot reach the moon and the moon“disappears”.

Zhao Li, 51, is known as“the Chinese Fabre”. He is famous for writing the“Chinese version(版本) of Souvenirs Entomologiques(《昆虫记》)” and setting up Asia's largest insect museum in Sichuan.
Zhao's story with insects dates back to his childhood. In his early years, Zhao started making butterfly specimens(标本) with the help of his parents. In high school, his butterfly specimens were enough for his first specimen exhibition.

During his trips, Zhao almost died. In 1992, he came across a mudslide in MountGongga, Sichuan Province. Luckily, a tree got in the way of a big rock coming toward him and saved him. However, the dangers didn't stop him from looking for butterflies. To find the nationally protected Teinopalpus aureus(金斑喙凤蝶), Zhao camped for seven days on the highest peak in southern Hainan. He became the first person in the world to successfully take a detailed photo of this butterfly species, which helps people see clearly how beautiful the butterflies are!

经典故事 During the Eastern Jin Dynasty(317~420), there was a child named Che Yin. He was smart and loved to read. He grew up in a poor family and couldn't afford(买得起) lamp oil to study at night.
One night, he saw fireflies(萤火虫) outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung the bag up as a lamp. It was said that he spent all of his summer nights reading like this.
Another child named Sun Kang who lived during the same period also loved reading. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil and couldn't study at night. When he suddenly woke up at midnight, he saw the snow reflecting the moonlight outside his house. His first thought was“Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” He took out his books and read, even though he was freezing cold.
Both of these kids later became successful government officials. People were touched by their hard-working spirit. Their stories inspired the Chinese idiom nangying yingxue(囊萤映雪), or“to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the reflected light of snow”.
In the past, people had a harder time studying than we do now. They had to copy books by hand because books were rare back then. For poor families, paper and writing brushes were too expensive to afford. Students even had to travel over mountains and rivers in order to find a good teacher. However, these conditions did not stop young minds from pursuing(追求) knowledge.
