The 13 I got from those afternoons mattered just as much. I still think about that library sometimes, and the day a storm came through but left the books mostly 14 . That year, I learned more than 15 from textbooks.

Passage 1
At the start of Senior 3, our school required every student to join a community service project. I chose a small library near my home. I expected boring work, dusting shelves each week. What I found there 1 me.
The library was run by a retired teacher, Mr. Luo, and most visitors were children from nearby families. On my first afternoon, a boy held up his homework and asked for help. I 2 at the question — it looked simple, but explaining it was harder than I thought. When we finally worked through it, his face 3 up.
Week after week, I returned. 4 , I had begun to look forward to those hours. The children remembered my name. One girl said she wanted to become a teacher 5 she could help others the way I had. Her words made my eyes 6 , and I looked away.
There were difficult days. Once a storm flooded the library, and we spent an afternoon 7 books from the wet floor. Mr. Luo handed me a towel and said, “At least the books are safe.” We laughed as we 8 the water off.
By December, I learned that helping others is not about 9 time or keeping score. It is about being there when someone needs you. The children did not need me to be 10 . They just needed me to show up. And showing up was a kind of 11 that worked both ways.
Senior 3 is often called the year of studying for yourself. But my afternoons at the library showed me it can also be a year of 12 for others. The grades I studied for at night mattered. The 13 I got from those afternoons mattered just as much. I still think about that library sometimes, and the day a storm came through but left the books mostly 14 . That year, I learned more than 15 from textbooks.

Later, inspired by a popular influencer couple, we 4 our own travel blog, writing about the Virgin Islands, centering around beautiful beaches. But 5 would come into view in every beautiful shot of the beach. It was hard to 6 the plastic pollution issue, especially on such pure and remote beaches. We also 9 ourselves to live a plastic-free life. We adjusted our diets, seldom ordering take-aways and avoiding plastic packaging. We carried reusable bags and tableware when travelling. On our daily dog 10 , we picked up rubbish and 11 those photos online. We connected with like-minded people and worked with eco-conscious brands. Eventually, the 12 led us to organize a country-wide beach clean-up campaign in Grenada.

Passage 3
Three years ago, I quit my job and started hiking. The reason is a usual story — stress, a difficult boss — though I barely remember the 1 now. I suppose I’m 3 for the outdoors. I love going solo — no one to please, no one to 4 . Just mountains, rivers, and minimal desires. Over three years, I’ve covered forty to fifty trails, most taking four to five days, some a full week.
After all that time, I’ve become 5 with the mountains. The scenery no longer stirs me. I finish a route and feel little, and I even question whether I still love hiking. Sometimes, as I walk, I wonder: shouldn’t life, like a hike, have a clear 6 ? Otherwise, you lose the way, farther and farther into 7 .
I tried finding partners at first, but we always 8 ways. Strangers on the trail offer little to talk about, and more importantly, hiking carries 9 . Going with someone means shared liability — if something happens, it’s a burden on both. Alone, I take full 10 for myself and owe no one else.
Every year, I meet someone who asks the same question: What have you 11 from solo hiking?
I’ve asked myself that countless times. The best 12 I can think of is a video game — repeating dungeons, clearing levels over and over. Yet when I count the rewards, my hands feel 13 . I see other travelers online who speak of courage, beautiful views, or delicious food. I genuinely envy them — they know what they’re 14 . For me, at the root, it was probably just escape.
But I can’t keep drifting forever. Maybe after the next mountain, I’ll finally have a(n) 15 .

At this crossroads, the student I intended to 4 walked into my office. He didn’t hide his mistake but 5 his anxiety. He claimed mastering these generative AI tools was 6 for his future career, yet he had no idea how or even whether he was allowed to use them. The more we talked, the more I saw my own doubts 7 in him.
