For a very long time, Chinese science and technology held a leading position in the world. A good example was the four great inventions of ancient China: paper-making, the compass, gunpowder and printing.
Before paper was invented, people wrote on heavy bamboo and expensive silk. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, paper-making technology was improved by Cai Lun. He made paper from cheaper materials, such as fishing nets and ropes. As a result, it became easier to make books.
Before the compass was used for sailing, sailors around the world had to depend on stars to find the right direction. In the Northern Song Dynasty, the compass was invented. It was made by putting a magnetic needle on “luopan”, a wooden disk.
