The Memory Palace: An Ancient Technique
Before the invention of writing, people relied heavily on memory to pass down knowledge. Ancient Greek and Roman orators were famous for their ability to deliver long speeches without notes. Their secret was a technique called the “method of loci,” also known as the “memory palace.”
The technique is simple in concept. You imagine a familiar place—your house, for example. You then associate each piece of information you want to remember with a specific location in that place. To recall the information, you mentally walk through the space and “see” the information in each location. The technique works because our spatial memory is remarkably strong. We can easily remember the layout of a place we have visited, even years later.
Modern research supports the effectiveness of this ancient method. Studies have shown that using the memory palace can significantly improve recall, especially for lists and sequences. It engages multiple regions of the brain, including those responsible for spatial awareness and visual imagery, making the memory more robust.
Anyone can learn to use a memory palace. Start with a simple route—the path from your front door to your bedroom, for example. Then, practice placing vivid mental images of what you need to remember along that route. The more vivid and unusual the images, the easier they will be to recall.
23.Who originally used the memory palace technique?
A.Modern scientists. B.Ancient Greek and Roman orators. C.Chinese scholars.
24.Why is the memory palace technique effective?
A.It uses visual images and spatial memory. B.It requires no practice.
C.It is based on modern technology.
25.What does modern research show about the technique?
A.It is outdated and ineffective. B.It significantly improves recall.
C.It only works for historical facts.
26.What advice does the writer give for starting a memory palace?
A.Use a familiar route and vivid images. B.Start with a large, complex building.
C.Avoid using visual imagery.

One day, after dropping his books on the floor for the third time, he thought, “There must be a better way.” Instead of just complaining, Jackson decided to 32 an invention to solve this problem.
He spent weeks researching online and 33 different materials. Finally, he designed a special “rolling bookshelf” that students can pull like a small suitcase. The shelf is made of lightweight carbon fiber (碳纤维), so it is strong but not 34 .
When Jackson presented his 35 at the school science fair, many teachers were impressed. They suggested he apply for a patent (专利). Jackson’s story tells us that innovation (创新) doesn’t always require a lab. It starts with 36 attention to the little inconveniences around us. If we keep thinking and trying, we can turn our 37 into real products. Now, Jackson is working with a local factory to produce his bookshelves. He hopes his invention can help students 38 back pain caused by heavy bags.

Scientists think that there has been life on the earth for hundreds of millions of years. However, we haven't found life on any other planet yet.
The earth is a planet and it 41 around the sun.Seven other planets also go around the sun.None of 42 has an environment like that of the earth, so scientists do not think they will find life on them. The sun and its planets are 43 the solar system, and our solar system is a small part of a much 44 group of stars and planets, called the Galaxy or the Milky Way.There are 45 of stars in the Galaxy, and our sun is only one of them.
Scientists have also 46 many other galaxies in the universe. They are very far away and their light has to travel for many years to 47 us.So how large is the universe? It is 48 to imagine.
Scientists have sent 49 to the planet Mars to take photos. However, no spacecraft has travelled far enough to get to other stars in our Galaxy.
Scientists have always asked the questions: with so many stars in the universe, are we 50 , or is there life out there in space? Have there been visitors to the earth from other planets? We do not know the answers yet.
六、任务型阅读 (共5小题;每题2分,共10分) 阅读短文,并按要求完成文后各小题。
In the future, people may travel to Mars by water-powered spaceship! Today’s spaceships are fine for getting things into space, but they are not so good at travelling long distances. These spaceships burn chemical fuels (燃料), and they are very expensive. Scientists say that a water-powered spaceship could make the trip to Mars much cheaper. Scientists think such a space ship could be developed soon.
The key to the water-powered spaceship is the engine. Regular engines push spaceships by burning fuel. The water engine will use steam (水蒸气), created by solar panels (太阳能) that heat water to a high temperature. Of course, the spaceship will have to carry a lot of water for the long trip to Mars. Today’s space ships could not carry that much water. But scientists think that a spaceship blown up like a balloon will be able to do it.
One US company has already developed a spaceship like this. These spaceships are made of a strong material. Two of them have already been sent up into space, using rockets and then later filled with air. “Balloon” space-ships could carry enough water for a long trip. With the “Balloon” spaceships, enough water could be carried to power the engines and grow food during the trip. And the people on the spaceship might even get to take a hot bath!
Scientists say the biggest advantage of such a spaceship would be the cost. The “Balloon” spaceship uses water to push it through space and costs about one thirtieth of a normal spaceship. If these scientists are correct, we may soon be on our way to Mars in the special spaceship.
51.What is the disadvantage of today’s regular spaceships for long-distance travel?
52. How will the water engine push the spaceship?
53. Why do scientists suggest using a spaceship blown up like a balloon?
54. What are the spaceships in US company made of?
55.翻译划线的句子

Life on the Moon is hard because there is no air or fresh food. I have a creative idea to solve the food problem.
I want to invent a "Smart Garden Box". It can use special water and lights to help vegetables grow quickly without soil. Also, it can make fresh air for us.
With this smart box, we can eat healthy food and breathe easily on the Moon. It will make our life there convenient and happy. I hope my idea will come true one day.
