Nowadays, many junior schools open international programmes. These programmes bring students chances to know foreign cultures. Students look forward to talking with foreign teenagers from different countries.

Plenty of students say these programmes are helpful. They can search for information in textbooks or on the Internet to finish their tasks. Pat McGee noticed her daughter hadn’t returned to the dentist’s waiting room just before her surgery (手术) was supposed to start. She walked to the bathroom and found Jessica McDaniels, 22, crying there. McGee took her daughter into her arms. “We’re going to say goodbye to the old Jessica,” she said, “and hi to the new Jessica.”
McDaniels, from St. Louis, US, had been wishing for this day since high school, when the bullying (霸凌) about her teeth started. While it was finally happening, she was nervous.
It was a social media post two months ago that got her there. Someone posted a photo of McDaniels with a comment about her overbite (龅牙)—a serious problem that affects the teeth. The post was shared many times, with many people making unkind remarks about her appearance.
The bullies didn’t know the road McDaniels had travelled. She had nine surgeries on her ears from 2 to 12 years old. She was almost deaf in her right ear. Her adult teeth didn’t start coming in until she was 11 or 12, and doctors couldn’t work out why they were pushed outward. It got worse as she got older. McDaniels had been trying for years to get her teeth fixed, but it always cost too much.
When her story got out, dentists wanted to help her. One of them, Maryann Udy, called McDaniels and offered her a new smile for free. McDaniels wasn’t sure at first, so she called her mother. She told McDaniels that Udy was her angel. “You need to do it,” she told her daughter.
The surgery was long and difficult. It took weeks for the swelling (肿块) to go down, and several more months before McDaniels’ new smile was ready. Later that year, she looked at her old photos online and smiled. “I loved her,” she said. “She’s grateful to be in less pain and to be on the path to a new smile. Sometimes, though, it feels like something is missing from who she was.” Still, she loves taking selfies and admiring her new appearance. “I looked good before,” she said. “I look even better now.”
59.What does the underlined “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Fixing her teeth. B.A social media post.
C.A comment about her overbite.
60.What happened after McDaniels’ picture was posted on social media?
A.Bullies tried to say sorry to her.
B.She got help from a dentist for free.
C.Some friends offered to pay for her surgery.
61.We can infer from the last paragraph that McDaniels ________.
A.wasn’t satisfied with her new appearance
B.didn’t want to post her photos on social media again
C.became more confident about herself after the surgery
62.What’s the best title of this article?
A.The Terrible School Bully B.An Understanding Mum C.A Beautiful New Smile

第四段中提到:“McDaniels had been trying for years to get her teeth fixed, but it always cost too much.”(麦克丹尼尔斯多年来一直试图修复她的牙齿,但这总是花费太高。)根据语境,“it”指代的是前文提到的“get her teeth fixed”这一行为,即修复牙齿。
60.第五段明确指出:“When her story got out, dentists wanted to help her. One of them, Maryann Udy, called McDaniels and offered her a new smile for free.”,说明在照片和故事传播后,她得到了一位牙医的免费帮助。
I look even better now”,并且喜欢自拍和欣赏自己的新外貌。

This summer, I visited the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. It is one of the most amazing natural wonders in the world. Our guide told us that it was formed by volcanic activity (火山活动) about 60 million years ago.
First, we walked along the coastal path. The view was breathtaking. The ocean was deep blue, and the sky was clear. Then, we saw the Giant’s Causeway itself—thousands of hexagonal (六边形的) stone columns (石柱) standing in the sea. They looked like giant stairs leading to the ocean. Some columns were as tall as 12 meters!
Next, we visited the visitor center. We watched a short film about how the causeway was formed. We also learned about the legend (传说) of Finn McCool, a giant who built the causeway to walk to Scotland. According to the legend, Finn had a fight with a Scottish giant and then destroyed the causeway so the Scottish giant couldn’t follow him back.
In the end, the guide told us that the Giant’s Causeway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is not only a natural wonder but also an important part of Irish culture and history. As I stood there, feeling the sea breeze on my face, I realized how small we are compared to nature. It was an unforgettable experience that made me appreciate the beauty of our planet even more.

You’re walking down the street, thinking about your own business when a stranger passes by. He doesn’t say anything at all, but he gives you a smile. In a moment and almost unwillingly, you will do the same thing. You just can’t help doing so. For some unknown reason, when we see someone smile, we just can’t stop ourselves doing the same thing.
In honour of World Smile Day, it’s time for us to find the answer to this question—Is smiling contagious
Well, a study in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences gives the answer“yes”. As part of the study, social psychologists (心理学家) look into why we often copy (模仿) people’s facial expressions when we talk to them.
Interestingly, one of the conclusions (结论) is that we “try on” the emotions (感情) of others when we are talking with them. For example, when a friend tells us some good news happily,we may unconsciously (无意识地) show the same emotion through our smile. In doing so,we are feeling and understanding his or her joy.
So the reason we smile back when someone smiles at us is that we want to feel the same way as that person. However, not everyone can do this.During the research, the psychologists find people with some diseases can’t copy others’ facial expressions. They know someone is smiling but they cannot smile back.
66.What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?
A.The reason for smiling back. B.An opinion on smiling back.
C.The result of smiling back. D.An example of smiling back.
67.Why do we smile back when we see someone else smile?
A.Because we want to talk with the person. B.Because we want to feel the person’s joy.
C.Because we want the person to understand us. D.Because we want to show we are clever.
68.What problems do people with some diseases have?
A.They can’t feel happy when others smile at them. B.They smile too much and can’t stop.
C.They can’t copy others’ smiles. D.They never smile and they are unhappy.
69.Which could be the best title for this passage?
A.Why is smiling contagious? B.What’s World Smile Day?
C.Why should we smile? D.Do you know how to smile?
【答案】66.D 67.B 68.C 69.A
67.原文第五段“So the reason we smile back when someone smiles at us is that we want to feel the same way as that person.”以及第三段“In doing so,we are feeling and understanding his or her joy.”,说明别人对我们微笑时,我们回笑是因为感受到对方的喜悦,因此选B。
68.原文第五段“the psychologists find people with some diseases can’t copy others’ facial expressions.”,可知患有某些疾病的人无法模仿别人的微笑表情,因此选C。

In a big forest, there was a little rabbit named Ruby. She was very shy and often played alone. When other animals invited her to play volleyball, she always refused because she feared she wasn’t good enough.
One day, a big storm came. The river near the forest rose and it had a flood there. A small bird’s nest with three baby birds was in danger. The mother bird cried for help.
Ruby heard the cries. She was scared, but she knew she had to be brave. She couldn’t save them alone. She rushed to find other animals. She asked the tall giraffe, the strong bear, and the clever monkeys for help.
At first, the animals had different ideas and argued. Ruby felt nervous, but she gently suggested, “Let us work together. The giraffe can be our ‘bridge,’ the bear can carry the nest, and the monkeys can help from the trees.” Everyone agreed.
Finally, they succeeded! They saved the baby birds safely. Ruby felt proud and happy. She learned that true strength came from teamwork and friendship.

A.The reason for smiling back. B.An opinion on smiling back.

C.Why should we smile? D.Do you know how to smile?
