Text 1
“I wish I had straight hair”; “I'd like to be taller”; “I look
forward to getting thinner”. At times, we all want to look a bit
more like someone else.
4
However, the pictures we see on TV and social media can
give us improper ideas about how our bodies “should” look. The
truth is that everybody is different—and that's a good thing.
Accepting and feeling good about our bodies is really important for
our self-confidence.

High-speed rail now connects big cities with medium and
small towns, driving tourism and local industries. For example,
after the Hangzhou-Changsha high-speed rail opened in 2014,
Jiangxi Province—located (位于) between the two cities—saw a
huge increase of 248 million tourists in ten years. Moreover, China
has shared its technology and experience with over 40 countries,
cooperating on projects. From importing (引进) technology to

of the country's progress, and faster maglev (磁悬浮) trains are
being studied for even better development in the future.

Text 3
Most middle school students sleep less than eight hours every
night because of heavy schoolwork. They usually finish homework
late and go to bed after eleven o'clock. Doctors have found that
short sleeping time may make students feel tired in daytime. Tired
students often cannot listen carefully in class and take notes slowly.
Sleep experts believe enough sleep can improve students' study
efficiency (效率) a lot. If students sleep well every night, they

will surely get better grades in all kinds of exams. Schools and
parents need to work together to make students develop good
sleeping habits.

中考演练
In nature, staying safe is as important as finding food.
Different animals have clever ways to protect themselves
from danger. Some use colours, while others use tricks
(花招)—and all these skills help them survive in the wild.

Many animals use camouflage to protect
themselves. For example, leaf insects look exactly like
dry leaves—their bodies have matching lines and they
move slowly like leaves in the wind, making it hard for birds to
find them. Arctic hares change colour with the seasons: white in
winter and brown in summer, so predators (捕食者) can hardly
see them.

Other animals use tricks to scare enemies. When in danger, a
pufferfish fills its body with water or air to become round and
spiky (尖的). Most predators don't want to bite a spiky ball!
Skunks (臭鼬) spray a stinky liquid (恶臭的液体) from their
bodies. The bad smell is so strong that it makes other animals run
away quickly.#5

Some animals work together to stay safe. Meerkats (灰沼狸)
live in groups: while most look for food, one stands on its back
legs to watch for danger. If it sees an enemy, it makes a loud
call— and all the meerkats run into their underground holes. Bees
also protect each other: when a bee hurts an enemy, it sends a
smell, and other bees come to keep danger away.
From hiding to scaring to working together, animals have
amazing ways to keep themselves safe. These skills are not just
clever—they are necessary for animals' survival in the wild.#7
