Mr. Brown liked rules. The children in his class thought he
was a little too strict. One Monday he said, “If everyone passes
the test, you will make the rules for one whole week.” The
students studied harder than ever and all of them passed. They
made four rules: no homework, phones allowed, teachers bring
snacks, and no lessons—only games.
Monday felt like a party. But by Tuesday, the classroom was
messy and noisy. By Wednesday, arguments broke out over which

On Friday, they begged (恳求) Mr. Brown, “Please, can we
have the old rules back?”
Mr. Brown smiled, “Now you see. ▲ ” The old rules
returned.#3

With her mom's help, she made crafts after school. Though
she felt sad when no one bought them at first, she never gave up.
Soon her crafts became popular. She earned money and planted
many trees to beautify the neighborhood.
She also taught friends to make green crafts and organized
sales for environmental projects. This year, she shared her story at
a community event. She believes small efforts can greatly protect
our environment.#1.3

中考演练
Jack's favorite activity is the “Show and Tell” every Friday.
This week, the topic was “Class Pet”, with a strict rule: Pets
must be small, quiet, and will not make trouble. The best show
would win a big box of chocolates, Jack's favorite in the world.
Jack wanted to be totally different and win the big prize. He
thought hard, and a “clever” idea came to his mind: What pet is
smaller, quieter, and safer than an egg? He asked his grandma for
a round egg. He wrapped (包) it in soft cotton, put it in his

inner schoolbag pocket to keep it warm, and carried it to school
carefully.
The big day finally came. All his classmates brought pets:
lovely hamsters (仓鼠) that ran happily in little boxes, colorful
goldfish swimming in clear glass bottles, and cute little birds that
sang soft and sweet songs. Each show won warm cheers and
applause (掌声) from the whole class, which made Jack more
nervous and worried about his unusual secret plan.

When it was Jack's turn, he held up the egg proudly. “This is
my pet,” he said loudly and bravely in front of the class. The
whole class laughed, and his teacher smiled and shook her head.
Just at that moment, a small crack appeared in the egg, and then
it got bigger and bigger. Minutes later, a soft chick with wet fluff
(绒毛) broke out! It tried to stand on its thin little legs but lost
its balance.
The whole class laughed even louder. The teacher couldn't
help laughing, too. Jack didn't win the chocolate, but he got a

special prize: “▲”. The little chick, after its fluff dried, became
a popular class pet. Jack learned deeply that the best fun never
comes from a perfect plan.#5
