SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGHS
If you had to choose the single most important discovery of the 20th century, you would have a real problem on your hands. In just 100 years, the world has changed completely. Amazing discoveries were made in medicine, communications and transport, not to mention our knowledge of the world and space.
课后巩固 多维提能
Although it is impossible to choose the most important discovery, it is possible to single out a few pioneers of the 20th century. Here are some of them.
One of the 20th century's premier scientists was Albert Einstein. In the summer of 1905, this outspoken young man was rocking his one-year-old baby when he was suddenly inspired. Subsequently, “E=mc2” was born. It showed how a small piece of mass could produce an unbelievable amount of energy.
课后巩固 多维提能
In 1928, another important finding was made by biologist Alexander Fleming. Before he went on holiday, Fleming left a dish of bacteria in his laboratory. When he came back, he noticed something strange. He double-checked and saw a blue mould in the dish around which the bacteria had been destroyed. This blue mould was in fact the natural form of penicillin, which Fleming perceived could be used to kill bacteria. A few years later, penicillin was being mass-produced and helping to save the lives of millions.
课后巩固 多维提能
During World War Ⅱ,when Fleming's discovery was first helping to cure people, the US Navy was looking for ways of improving the accuracy of their missiles. The navy turned to Eckert, an engineer, and Mauchly, a physicist, to deal with the problem and produce a machine to do the job in a joint effort. Although they only finished after the war in 1946, it did not matter. This huge machine was the world's first computer, but it was nothing like our computers today.
课后巩固 多维提能
These pioneers of the 20th century were all dedicated to improving the quality of human life on Earth. Human life on this planet has been transformed into a “global village”, with all the different countries linked in the chain of common interests. There is no doubt about it. Without the breakthroughs of these pioneers in science and technology, whether lucky or planned, the world as we know it today would be a completely different place.

√
1.Why would people have a real dilemma, if they had to choose the single most important discovery of the 20th century?
A.Because different people have different ideas and it's difficult to choose.
B.Because there were no great discoveries in the 20th century.
C.Because there was no common standard to judge.

(2026·石家庄高二月考)Teachers need to fully
understand how AI actually works so that they can
make wise decisions on when and how to use it. I
recently met with a kindergarten teacher who was very worried. She asked me, “Do I really have to use AI with my kids? I don't even know what it is.” She was under such pressure, and that's not healthy.
课后巩固 多维提能
It's an incredibly difficult and unfair situation for teachers to be placed in. That's why AI literacy (人工智能素养), along with supporting teachers with the integration of AI literacy in their classrooms, is a main priority for me. It's very important to slow down and make sure teachers feel comfortable and confident before integrating AI into schools.
课后巩固 多维提能
It's important to think about using AI in ways suitable for different ages and address privacy concerns. While there are still gaps, I remain optimistic. AI can make life easier and help us be more productive and creative if used as a helpful partner.
How do these innovations shape the future of education? Are you fearful or hopeful? I'm hopeful that this could be a turning point where teaching and learning are greatly changed, as education has changed little since it began.
课后巩固 多维提能
AI is here to stay, so we have to decide to make it positive in the ways we want. If we don't do anything, it could have negative effects. This feels like a big change, but people were also worried when computers and smartphones were first introduced to schools. We have adapted to those and will adapt to life with AI too.
课后巩固 多维提能
One of the fundamental goals of education is to prepare our students to contribute meaningfully to society. With things changing as rapidly as they are, we need to equip students with the abilities they will need to navigate (导航) and grow in a constantly developing world. We should emphasize learning how to learn and how to adapt.

(2026·武汉高二期中) Most of us rarely question the accuracy (准确性) of the navigation system dot that shows our location on a map.Yet when we are visiting a new city and using our phone to navigate (导航), it can seem as if we are jumping from one spot to another, even though we are walking steadily along the same sidewalk.
课后巩固 多维提能
“Cities are hard for satellite navigation,” explained Ardeshir Mohamadi.Mohamadi, a doctoral fellow at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology(NTNU), is researching how to make affordable navigation system receivers (like those found in smartphones and fitness watches) much more accurate without depending on expensive external correction services.
课后巩固 多维提能
High accuracy is especially important for vehicles that drive themselves—autonomous or self-driving cars.Mohamadi and his team at NTNU have developed a new system that allows autonomous vehicles to navigate safely through busy city environments.
课后巩固 多维提能
“In cities, glass and concrete (混凝土) make satellite signals reflect back and forth.Tall buildings block the view, and what works perfectly on an open motorway is not so good when you enter a built-up area,” said Mohamadi. When navigation system signals reflect off buildings, they take longer to reach the receiver. This delay (延迟) throws off the calculation of distance to the satellites, which makes the reported position inaccurate.Such urban environments are known as “urban canyons”.It is similar to being at the bottom of a deep valley, where signals reach you only after multiple reflections from the walls.
课后巩固 多维提能
“For autonomous vehicles, this makes the difference between confident, safe behavior and hesitant, unreliable driving. That is why we developed SmartNav, a type of positioning technology designed for ‘urban canyons’,” explained Mohamadi.
课后巩固 多维提能
Not only are the satellite signals disrupted (受干扰) down between the tall buildings, but the signals that are correct do not have enough accuracy. In order to solve this problem, the researchers have combined several different technologies to correct the signal. The result is a computer program that can be integrated(合并) into the navigation system of autonomous vehicles.
