Artificial Intelligence: A REAL THREAT?
In the words of Professor Stephen Hawking, artificial intelligence will be “either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity”.Technology of Tomorrow Forum wants to hear your thoughts on AI.Is it our greatest human achievement so far?Or is it the biggest threat to our existence?

Thanks to AI, I've got my own super-smart personal assistant built into my phone. She always has an immediate answer for any question I put to her, and even uses my answers to learn more about my preferences. It used to feel like 50 per cent of my time was spent researching new restaurants. In contrast, my PA only needs a few seconds to find the right place. Every recommendation she gives me is great since she can predict if I will like a particular restaurant.

And speaking of hanging out, I'm hoping that self-driving cars are available soon. I've been taking driving lessons for over a year, and still haven't got my licence. Self-driving cars can learn to drive in the same way that we do, and can make judgements based on information. And as they won't be susceptible to human error, they'll certainly be a lot safer. The only thing is that there might be a few machine-learning problems when the first cars hit the market, so perhaps I'd better learn to drive first. Still, I do think that developments in AI will on the whole make doing day-to-day things a lot easier.

Pink_haze
Machine learning is something we have come to accept as a part of our modern world. I believe most of the value of AI lies in its capacity to analyse and interpret vast amounts of data, which means it can even solve problems that are too challenging for human experts.
课后巩固 多维提能
But while super-intelligent AI could be the biggest leap forward in human history, if it goes wrong or falls into the wrong hands, it could also be the most dangerous. However, AI is not going to go away. We have no choice but to embrace it and regulate it. One thing I think we all agree on, though, is that saying “My AI did it!” won't be any excuse for illegal or immoral behaviour!

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2026·邯郸期中)Chinese researchers have developed
a 3D hand-shaped microrobot measuring about 40
micrometers, smaller than the diameter of a human hair,
to achieve precise movements such as the grasping, delivering, and releasing of particles or cells, according to a research article published in the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing.
课后巩固 多维提能
Microrobots play an essential role in early medical checks and accurate treatment, given increasing demands for better control over tools in bio-medicine and micromanipulation. Microrobots can do this well, so they help doctors find patients' health problems earlier and provide treatments that fit each patient.
课后巩固 多维提能
However, the research says most microrobots have a problem, in which they are currently made of a single material system, with their production process focused on a driving module as the main structure. This makes it hard for one microrobot to combine various functions, which are necessary for completing complex jobs.
课后巩固 多维提能
To fix this, researchers from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) created this hand-shaped microrobot. As CAS explained, when using the robot, researchers first put it in a liquid. When the surrounding pH value changes, the microrobot's “palm” unfolds or folds like flower petals—just like your hand pulls back automatically when touching hot water. Guided by a magnetic field, this microrobot can avoid obstacles and target particles or cells. When the liquid turns acidic (酸性的), its “palm” shuts to hold the target tightly. Then the robot turns and adjusts its direction to take the target to the right place. When the liquid becomes alkaline (碱性的), the “palm” opens again to release the particles or cells.
课后巩固 多维提能
Researchers say this robot may soon be used to control cells, carry drugs for accurate treatment, and even help protect the environment.

(2026·龙岩高二期中)How do you beat the summer heat? If you're like most people, you turn the air conditioning on when it's the hottest time of the day.But what if you could use nonpeak (非高峰时间的) electrical hours and store the cold to use the next day? This idea has become a reality for a New York City high-rise that's being cooled by ice.
课后巩固 多维提能
Eleven Madison, a skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan, is using cool, frozen ice overnight to cool the building, reported CBS News.Four stories below ground, an ice battery system freezes water during the night, when electrical use is low, and uses this ice to cool the building during the day.“There's about 500,000 pounds of ice created every night,” said Holly Paeper, president of Trane Technologies, a company that did the installation (装置).
课后巩固 多维提能
Air conditioning uses nearly 20% of energy use in homes and businesses globally. However, on extremely hot days, that number can jump to 70%.Installations like the one in Eleven Madison help to lower that.According to Paeper, the company has installed the technology in about 4,000 sites worldwide.
课后巩固 多维提能
The system in the basement of Eleven Madison uses 100 tanks that are each the size of a parking spot.Because there's a lot of energy consumed in freezing water, a more effective way had to be found.“We take water, and add some other elements in it,” explained Dr.Patrick Shamberger, an associate professor at Texas A&M University.“So we can take control of that temperature basically anywhere we want it, in the zero to 20℃ range.”
课后巩固 多维提能
While ice batteries aren't being used to cool food or to power electrical devices, they're being used to cool buildings. For now, combining ice batteries with other types of energy storage from renewables can help the power grid (电网) to keep up in hot weather as well as lower the cost of electricity. It's a win-win for all.
