It has only one rule: keep the shuttlecock in the air without using your hands. Players try to kick as many as possible. Nowadays, students have shuttlecock lessons in some schools.
Chinese yo-yo
Chinese yo-yo (kongzhu in Chinese), is an hourglass-shaped toy. It is made of wood or bamboo and played with a string. The string connects two hand sticks. This fun game is popular in north China. Only when three strikes into the hole were achieved did the player win the point.

As a fun and relaxing game, cuju was used in the army to train soldiers. Its rules were similar to football’s. Each team usually had 12 or 16 players. No hands were allowed. Passage 2
Mandarin Connects My Children to Their Heritage
Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to straddling (横跨) two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side lost ground, inch by inch. While I happily accepted the bills in red envelopes that adults gave to children for Lunar New Year, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born, I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin. I felt that they ought to be able to speak the language of their grandparents, the first language their mother encountered.
Parenting books advised narrating your actions while with your baby, so I started digging out long-buried words: “ball,” “eat,” “sleep,” “play.” However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more obvious. One morning, when my daughter asked “What is the word for ‘arm’?” I panicked. Had I already reached the boundaries (边界) of my knowledge?
Luckily, these days the ready availability of Chinese language media—from books to television shows to music—is a much-needed tool to parents like me.
The first time I stepped into the local library in my Bay Area hometown, I was amazed to find a well-stocked (贮藏量多的) Chinese section. The tale of the Monkey King immediately caught my daughter’s imagination.
When I see my son chat with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
My youngest child recited Li Bai’s “________” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool last fall. For generations of Chinese children, it’s the first piece of literature they memorize. It’s trotted out (翻出) for all occasions. My son’s voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder fell on my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson: verses that had been spoken by my father and my grandparents when they were students in China, and by countless boys and girls before that.

Passage 3
Northern Chinese would like to eat canned yellow peaches (黄桃罐头) when they are ill. They were “good medicine” when they were young.
In the 1970s and 1980s, canned yellow peaches were valuable food in the north. For common families, only when visiting relatives and friends, or during the Spring Festival, could they have a can. Children from common families could only taste a can of peaches on birthdays, holidays and when they were sick. When children are sick, they don’t want to eat much. And they don’t want to take medicine because of the bad taste. At this time, parents will open cans of yellow peaches to feed sick children. Over time, the generation have the habit of feeding yellow peaches to their children when they are ill.
Also, the older generation have certain superstitions about the fruit peach. The ancients believed that peaches could mean health and long life. And “peach” has the same pronunciation as “escape” in Chinese. So, even if they know that eating canned yellow peaches does not help treat the children, many parents still feed their children cans during and after their illness, and believe they can escape the pain.
Finally, canned yellow peaches belong to the “comfort food” of a generation more or less. “Comfort food” is a saying that all countries have, which can provide beautiful old memories. Comfort foods can quickly lower a person’s stress. In different countries, the main comfort foods are different: Hungarians eat honey when they are sick. Pakistanis will make a kind of porridge called khichdi. These comfort foods are different in taste, but they were fed by parents and families to their children when they were ill.
1.Northern Chinese children from common families ate cans in the 1970s and 1980s except ________.
A.weekdays B.their birthdays
C.the days of illness D.the Spring Festival
2.What ways are used to develop the last paragraph?
①Giving definitions (下定义)
②Telling stories
③Making comparisons (做比较)
④Giving examples
A.①②③ B.①②④
C.①③④ D.②③④
3.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The Differences Between Some Kinds of Peaches
B.The Steps of Making Delicious Canned Yellow Peaches
C.The Introduction of Some Famous “Comfort Foods”
D.Northern Chinese People’s Love for Canned Yellow Peaches
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D
【导语】本文解释了中国北方人生病时喜欢吃黄桃罐头这一习俗的来历。
【详解】1.细节理解题。根据“Children from common families could only taste a can of peaches on birthdays, holidays and when they were sick.”可知,普通家庭的孩子只有在生日、节假日和生病的时候才能吃到桃子罐头,故不包括选项A“在工作日”。故选A。
2.推理判断题。通读最后一段,根据“ ‘Comfort foods’ is a saying that…”可知,对应“Giving definitions (定义)”;根据“In different countries, the main comfort foods are different”可知,对应“Making comparisons (比较)”;根据“Hungarians eat honey when they are sick. Pakistanis will make a kind of porridge called khichdi.”可知,对应“Giving examples”;由此可推知①③④符合题意。故选C。

Passage 4
So far, China has successfully sent a large number of satellites and spaceships in-to space. Space scientists have been greatly inspired (赋予灵感) by the old stories and ancient famous people when giving them names.
Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going to the moon. Change Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular stories. As you can see, China’s first man-made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang’ e l. More interestingly, the moon rover (巡视器) was named after the Jade Rabbit, who is the partner of Chang’e in the story. These old stories carry people’s best wishes and dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists have made them come true.
Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another story to show how much ancient Chinese people wanted to know about the unknown world. Now, Kua Fu is going with the scientists to “visit” the sun, because we have a space project called Kua Fu Mission.
Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2, 000 years ago. His discovery made space study take a big step at that time. So, China’s first quantum (量子) science satellite was named Mozi, making China the first country in the world to achieve quantum communication between satellites and the ground.
From such simple things as giving names to the satellites, we can see how great our traditional culture is and what influence (影响) it has on our modern science and technology.
1.In China, space scientists get ideas from ________ when naming satellites.
① old stories ②traditional projects ③ancient famous people ④popular inventions
A.①② B.①③ C.②④ D.③④
2.What do we know about Chang’e I according to the text?
A.It protects the Jade Rabbit. B.It moves around the moon.
C.It visits the sun with the scientists. D.It is the world’s first man-made satellite.
3.How does the writer support his opinion in Paragraph 4?
A.By listing numbers. B.By comparing facts. C.By giving an example. D.By reporting a result.
4.Which is the structure of the text? (①= Paragraph 1②= Paragraph 2, … )
A. B. C. D.
5.What is the text mainly about?
A.How to develop our space industry.
B.Why to spread the traditional Chinese culture.
C.Achievements we have made in science and technology.
D.Traditional Chinese culture influencing our space science
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.D
【导语】本文主要讨论了中国在给卫星命名时从古代故事和古代名人中获得灵感,并以此来说明中国传统文化对现代科学技术的影响。
【详解】1.细节理解题。根据“Space scientists have been greatly inspired (赋予灵感) by the old stories and ancient famous people when giving them names.”、“China’s first man-made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang’e 1”和“For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2,000 years ago. His discovery made space study take a big step at that time”可知,科学家们在命名卫星时依据了古老的故事和古代的名人。故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据“China’s first man-made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang’e 1”可知,嫦娥1号是中国首颗绕月飞行的人造卫星。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据“For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist,...So, China’s first quantum (量子) science satellite was named Mozi”可知,作者给了墨子这颗量子科学卫星的例子来支持他的观点。故选C。
4.篇章结构题。从文章结构来看,第一段是总述,第二段到第四段分别讲述不同的例子来进一步说明主题,第五段再次总结,文章是总分总结构。故选A。
5.主旨大意题。根据“From such simple things as giving names to the satellites, we can see how great our traditional culture is and what influence (影响) it has on our modern science and technology.”可知,整篇文章围绕传统文化如何影响现今的航天科学这一主题展开。故选D。

People in ancient China worked long hours each day. To relax, they invented many games. Here are some of them.
Shuttlecock
Shuttlecock (jianzi in Chinese) can go back to over 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty. This traditional Chinese game is very simple.
The players move the hand sticks up and down to let the toy go round. Some good players can even throw it up into the air and then catch it on the string.
Chuiwan
Chuiwan was one of the ball games in ancient China, which was very popular in the Song Dynasty. “Chui” means “________”, and “wan” means “ball”. This sport was similar to golf. On a large field, the players were divided into two groups. Usually there were 2 to 10 people in each group. Everyone had three chances to get the ball into holes with a stick. Only when three strikes into the hole were achieved did the player win the point.
Cuju
First recorded 2,000 years ago, cuju is known as the earliest form of football. The ball was made of leather on the outside and filled with rice bran inside. As a fun and relaxing game, cuju was used in the army to train soldiers. Its rules were similar to football’s. Each team usually had 12 or 16 players. No hands were allowed. Only feet and the head could be used. The ball should be kicked into the opposite goal.

1.We can learn from the first paragraph that the author ________.

② By bringing them to the local library to read Chinese books.
③ By speaking the words of her actions in Mandarin while with them.
④ By making use of Chinese language media, such as books, television shows and music.
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
4.According to the article, when she realized that her children were very interested in Chinese culture, the author ________.
A.felt reconnected to Chinese culture
B.was full of hope for the inheritance (继承) of Chinese culture
C.thought of her own experience of learning Chinese as n child
D.felt that all her efforts to teach them Mandarin had been worth it
5.Which of the following best fits the blank?
A.Mount Heaven’s Gate Viewed from A far B.Sitting Alone in face of Peak Jingting

C.Learning Chinese poems is a great way to deepen your knowledge of the Chinese language.

A.①②③ B.①②④
C.①③④ D.②③④
3.What’s the best title for the passage?

B.The Steps of Making Delicious Canned Yellow Peaches
C.The Introduction of Some Famous “Comfort Foods”
D.Northern Chinese People’s Love for Canned Yellow Peaches
