Speech and other sharp sounds were more likely to slip through, with those sounds often carrying higher-frequency details that this design struggled to cancel. “This idea is similar to noise-cancelling headphones, which usually work best against steady background sounds such as the hum of an engine,” said Lam. The speakers used in the experiments were quite small, so they could not handle very deep low-frequency noise well. Larger speakers might improve performance, but they could also block more sunlight and reduce the view from the window.
