Twenty years ago, I made my living driving a taxi through the night streets of the city. One early morning at 2:30, I arrived at a dimly lit apartment building to pick up a passenger. Most drivers would just honk and wait, but I knocked — experience had taught me that late-night fares often needed extra help.
An elderly woman in her 80s answered, dressed like she’d stepped out of an old film. Her apartment was bare, its furniture covered. As we slowly made our way to the cab, she leaned heavily on my arm, thanking me repeatedly for my patience. “It’s nothing,” I said. “I just treat passengers how I’d want my mother treated.”
Once settled in the backseat, she requested a detour (绕行) through downtown. I hesitated — until she whispered, “I’m on my way to a hospice (临终安养院). I’m in no hurry.” In that moment, I turned off the meter.
For the next two hours, we traveled through the sleeping city as she guided me to landmarks of her life: The office building where she’d worked, the apartment where she and her late husband began their life, a warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she’d twirled in her youth. At each location, she’d grow quiet, staring at shadows where her memories lived.
As dawn painted the horizon pink, she sighed, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.” We arrived at the hospice. As I helped her into a wheelchair, she tried to pay. “You owe me nothing,” I said. On impulse, I bent down and embraced her. She held on tighter than I expected. “You’ve given an old woman one last moment of joy,” she whispered.
Then I drove away, haunted by her words. That quiet night taught me that life’s most meaningful moments often come disguised as small acts of kindness.
14. Why did the driver knock on the passenger’s door?
A. Night fares often needed special assistance.
B. Dim lighting made honking ineffective there.
C. Apartment rules required no honking at night.
D. Elderly passengers preferred personal contact.
15. How did the woman react at her life landmarks?
A. She compared old and new city views.
B. She silently revisited past memories.
C. She requested photos of each location.
D. She described youthful adventures vividly.
16. What does the woman’s tight hug imply?
A. Anxiety about entering hospice alone.
B. Physical weakness required support to stand.
C. Emotional gratitude for the journey given.
D. Regret about being unable to pay the fare.
17. Which saying conveys the driver’s lesson?
A. Time heals all wounds.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. He who helps others helps himself.
D. Small kindnesses have great impacts.

In modern daily life, people fill almost every spare moment with endless short videos and quick online news. Such easy access to fast entertainment has quietly changed people’s reading habits, leaving traditional literary works far less favored than they once were.
Many ordinary people have formed a fixed belief that novels and poems serve little practical purpose, unable to solve real-life troubles or bring immediate benefits, so they choose to stay away from serious reading completely. However, this view is one-sided. Literature is actually an irreplaceable treasure that benefits people greatly in the long run.
When one spends time staying with literary works, they are no longer limited to their own life experience. Between the lines, they can quietly experience the joy and sorrow of characters living in different surroundings and times.
This light emotional experience gradually shapes one’s inner sensitivity, allowing individuals to view life events from more than one angle instead of sticking to their own narrow understanding alone. Such inner growth can hardly be gained from those fast-paced online contents designed only for instant amusement.
People are easily influenced by popular online views which are usually simple and one-sided, leaving little space for personal thought. Literary creation behaves quite differently. It seldom provides definite answers to complex life problems, nor does it force readers to accept fixed opinions. Instead, it presents complicated life situations and inner conflicts, pushing readers to sort out hidden relations, observe human nature, and form their own judgments independently.
Some old literary works have survived hundreds of years and still attract modern readers. Behind their lasting attraction lie the shared human feelings and life puzzles that never change with time. Modern readers may find their own confusion and expectation reflected in those classic lines, feeling closely connected with strangers from distant generations.
It is improper to regard literature as nothing more than a way to kill time. Its value lies in polishing people’s inner world, shaping their way of thinking, and helping them keep a clear mind in the chaos of the noisy flow of modern information.
18. What is the author’s major concern?
A. Fast entertainment is changing people’s spare time.
B. People ignore the long-term value of literary reading.
C. Online opinions limit people’s independent thinking.
D. Modern readers lose interest in short online entertainment.
19. How does literary reading promote people’s inner growth?
A. By improving people’s inner feelings and views of life.
B. By helping readers form independent judgments quickly.
C. By freeing people from various real-life limitations.
D. By offering different new ways to solve personal troubles.
20. Why can classic literary works attract modern readers?
A. They exactly record real historical events.
B. They provide fixed views on human nature.
C. They completely set people free from modern noise.
D. They carry everlasting human feelings and puzzles.
21. What is the author’s attitude towards people’s wrong idea against literature?
A. Fully understanding.
B. Strongly disapproving.
C. Completely confused.
D. Slightly doubtful.

Have you ever obeyed the suggestions of a digital writing assistant to replace a word or restructure a sentence? Before the appearance of digital tools, you’d probably have turned to a dictionary for the same assistance.
Dictionaries enable us to write not with fail-safe convenience but with originality and a point of view. While AI assistants produce phrases and statements so writers don’t have to think them up, dictionaries provide us with the knowledge to use language ourselves in expressive and potentially infinite (无穷的) ways. They place choice and authority literally in human hands, forcing us to discover how we want to explain ourselves and our ideas to the world.
The abundance of digital writing assistants gives greater urgency to debates about what a dictionary should be. In 1946, George Orwell described good writing as “picking out words for the sake of their meaning,” a practice that dictionaries facilitate while digital writing programs stifle. Writers consulting a dictionary make a choice, while writers guided by an app have their choices made for them. The digital-native approach delivers hands-off, derivative (衍生的) communication. The other requires leafing through pages without knowing exactly where you’ll end up. Without dictionaries to provide us with a guide to English’s potential, writing that way is nearly impossible.
Our ability to express ourselves is critical — it helps us define who we are. Dictionaries aid us in achieving this: They categorize our unique ways of thinking through language. I’m a Canadian; my feeling of pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like “eaves trough” or “serviette”, which are well-documented in dictionaries but rarely used by AI chatbots, for the most part.
As digital writing extends deeper into our lives and minds, we need dictionaries more than ever. Abandoning dictionaries and embracing mechanized writing would weaken our capacity for collective identity quite as much as the ability to express ourselves.
22. What might be a distinct feature of dictionaries according to the author?
A. They promise fail-safe phrases.
B. They possess academic authority.
C. They facilitate creative writing.
D. They provide ready-made expressions.
23. What does the underlined word “stifle” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Favor. B. Revise.
C. Observe. D. Discourage.
24. Why does the author mention “eaves trough” and “serviette” in paragraph 4?
A. To show how AI aids us in expressing.
B. To indicate the weakness of dictionaries.
C. To celebrate the diversity of Canadian English.
D. To illustrate how language use affects identity.
25. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Keep Your Dictionary?
B. How to Deal with Digital Writing?
C. Who Uses Writing Assistants?
D. What to Expect from Dictionaries?

Sports Help Build a Healthier and Longer Life
Building new skills and challenging your brain are generally good for healthy aging. ____26____ When you decide to get moving, keep these tips for a long life in mind.
Make it social. For decades, social interaction has been tied to better health and a longer life. Find ways to be active with other people, like joining a run club, signing up for a group fitness class or trying a new sport through your local recreation center or park’s department. ____27____
Keep challenging yourself. Sports are mentally challenging too because they’re dynamic and goal-driven. But you can bring that mindset to any form of exercise. First, add some senses of freshness: a new route, a different gym routine or an unusual playing environment. Second, set clear, short-term goals that push you forward. ____28____
____29____ Common exercises like running and cycling are great ways to stay active, said Steven Moore, a metabolic epidemiologist at the National Cancer Institute. But pair them with upper-body work, including resistance training, so that you’re getting a full-body workout and building muscle.
Aim for consistency. The benefits of exercise only stick if you keep doing it as you get older, said Dr. I-Min Lee, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. While tennis is sometimes called a “lifetime sport,” you don’t need to stick with one activity forever. ____30____ Ultimately, any and all physical activity improves long life. “Find something that works for you,” Dr. Lee said. “The bottom line is to move more.”
A. Exercise your whole body.
B. Try some stronger exercise.
C. So it’s worth finding a sport you enjoy.
D. This social element also helps with motivation and sense of responsibility.
E. It’s proved that brain training like reading or chess slows down aging effectively.
F. For example, you may gradually increase your walking time or add up the weight you lift.
G. Mixing things up keeps exercise fresh and easier to sustain, especially as your body changes.

In a small country school, there lived two close friends named Ray and Toby. Ray came from a wealthy family, while Toby’s family struggled to make ends meet. Despite their differences, the two were inseparable and shared a deep bond of friendship. They spent countless hours together, whether it was playing games after school, helping each other with homework, or simply sharing stories under the shade of the old banyan tree.
On a sunny afternoon, Ray brought his precious stamp collection to school, eager to show Toby his latest treasure — a rare (稀有的) stamp gifted by his uncle. Toby, who had never seen such beautiful stamps before, stroked the stamps gently, his eyes wide with wonder. “Such an amazing collection! This rare stamp is incredible, Ray!” He exclaimed with admiration. After school, Ray packed the stamps back into his schoolbag and returned home, his heart light with the joy of sharing his passion with his best friend.
However, the next morning, Ray’s joy turned to panic when he discovered that the rare stamp was missing. He tore through his room, searching every corner and every book, but the stamp was nowhere to be found. His heart sank as a troubling thought crowded his mind — Toby was the only one who had got up close and personal with the stamps. Could he have taken it?
The next day at school, he confronted Toby with anger. “Did you take my stamp?” he asked directly, searching Toby’s face for any sign of guilt. Toby, shocked by his questioning, replied with mixed feelings, “No, Ray! I would never take anything that belongs to you. You’re my best friend!”
But Ray, consumed by frustration and disappointment, couldn’t let go of his doubts. “You were the only one who saw it,” he said coldly. “If you hadn’t taken it, then where could it be?” Deeply hurt by Ray’s lack of trust, Toby turned away without another word, his heart heavy with the weight of the accusation (控诉).
The days that followed were filled with an uncomfortable silence between the two friends. They avoided each other, the once-strong bond damaged by the loss of the stamp.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

B 19. A 20. D 21. B

C 23. D 24. D 25. A
根据第二段中“Dictionaries enable us to write not with fail-safe convenience but with originality and a point of view.(词典让我们写作时并非依靠万无一失的便捷,而是能够展现独特性和观点)”可知,字典能帮助我们写出有原创性的内容。
第四段开头“Our ability to express ourselves is critical — it helps us define who we are. Dictionaries aid us in achieving this: They categorize our unique ways of thinking through language.(我们表达自我的能力至关重要——它帮助我们定义自己是谁。词典有助于我们实现这一目标:它们通过语言将我们独特的思维方式进行分类)”点明观点:表达自我的能力帮助我们定义自身身份,字典能帮我们保留独有的语言表达。下文“I’m a Canadian; my feeling of pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like “eaves trough” or “serviette”, which are well-documented in dictionaries but rarely used by AI chatbots, for the most part.(我是加拿大人;我对祖国的自豪感因一些小小的加拿大式词汇而得到增强,比如“檐沟”或“餐巾纸”,这些词汇在词典中有详细记载,但在大多数情况下,人工智能聊天机器人很少使用它们)”作者举这两个加拿大特有的词汇,是为了说明:这类特有语言能增强本土身份认同感,即语言使用会影响个人/群体身份。
根据全文内容,结合最后一段“As digital writing extends deeper into our lives and minds, we need dictionaries more than ever. Abandoning dictionaries and embracing mechanized writing would weaken our capacity for collective identity quite as much as the ability to express ourselves.(随着数字写作深入我们的生活和思维,我们对词典的需求比以往任何时候都更加迫切。放弃词典而转向机械化写作,将同等程度地削弱我们建立集体认同的能力和表达自我的能力)”可知,全文对比数字写作助手和字典,层层论述:在数字写作普及的当下,字典对保留写作原创性、塑造身份认同有不可替代的作用,结尾点明我们比以往更需要字典。由此可知,A项“为什么要保留字典?”适合作本文标题。故选A。

E 27. D 28. F 29. A 30. G
上文“Building new skills and challenging your brain are generally good for healthy aging.(培养新技能并挑战大脑通常对健康老龄化有益。)”总起指出“培养新技能、挑战大脑有益健康老龄化”,下文“When you decide to get moving, keep these tips for a long life in mind.(当你决定开始运动时,请牢记这些有助于长寿的小贴士。)” E选项“It’s proved that brain training like reading or chess slows down aging effectively.(实验证明,像阅读或国际象棋这样的大脑训练能够有效延缓衰老。)”
,前文“Find ways to be active with other people, like joining a run club, signing up for a group fitness class or trying a new sport through your local recreation center or park’s department.(寻找与他人一起活动的方式,比如加入跑步俱乐部、报名参加团体健身课程或者通过当地娱乐中心或公园部门尝试一项新的运动。)” D 选项“This social element also helps with motivation and sense of responsibility.(这种社交元素也有助于激发动力和责任感。)”
,前文“Second, set clear, short-term goals that push you forward.(其次,设定清晰、短期的目标,推动你前进。)” F选项“For example, you may gradually increase your walking time or add up the weight you lift.(例如,你可以逐渐增加步行时间或者增加所举重物的重量。)”
后文“Common exercises like running and cycling are great ways to stay active, said Steven Moore, a metabolic epidemiologist at the National Cancer Institute. But pair them with upper-body work, including resistance training, so that you’re getting a full-body workout and building muscle.(像跑步和骑自行车这样的常见运动是保持活跃的绝佳方式,美国国家癌症研究所的代谢流行病学家史蒂文·摩尔说道。但将它们与上半身锻炼相结合,包括阻力训练,这样你就能进行全身锻炼并增强肌肉。)”明确指出“跑步、骑车等运动很好,但要搭配上肢训练和抗阻训练,实现全身锻炼”。A选项“Exercise your whole body.(锻炼你的全身。)” 故选A项。
,前文“While tennis is sometimes called a “lifetime sport,” you don’t need to stick with one activity forever.(虽然网球有时被称为“终身运动”,但你并不需要永远只从事这一项运动。)” G 选项“Mixing things up keeps exercise fresh and easier to sustain, especially as your body changes.(变换运动方式能让锻炼保持新鲜感,也更容易坚持下去,尤其是在你的身体发生变化的情况下。)”中的Mixing things up“多样化运动”正好对应前文的“don’t need to stick with one activity forever”,并解释了多样化运动的好处 —— 保持新鲜感、更容易长期坚持,逻辑完全通顺。

表示“写信”用 write,描述正在发生的事情,用现在进行时,且主语为I,谓语用am writing,I am缩写为I’m。表示“建议”用suggest,后接that引导的宾语从句;suggest表建议时,从句用(should) do虚拟语气,should可省略。 表示“让学生们随机两人一组练习英语口语”用不定式to pair students up randomly for practising spoken English,作后置定语修饰decision。
表示“促进我们互动多样性”用不定式to promote diversity in our interactions,作后置定语,修饰intention。主句中:主语用I;表示“有一些担忧”用have a few concerns,主语为I,谓语用动词原形have。
“因人而异”用固定短语vary from person to person。表示“使得”用make,逗号后用现在分词making作结果状语;make it +adj.+for sb. to do表示“使某人做某事……”;表示“很难”用difficult,用some作for的宾语;“有效地作出贡献”用contribute effectively,it为形式宾语,真正宾语是to contribute effectively。
固定搭配have trouble (in) doing sth. “找到共同点”用动名词短语finding common ground,作宾语;or并列第二个动名词,“保持对话” 用maintaining a conversation;“与不熟悉的搭档”用with an unfamiliar partner。
本句使用 make it +adj.+for sb. to do 结构,it 为形式宾语;“更容易”用easier,“他们”用them作介词for的宾语。it作形式宾语,不定式作真正宾语;“参与有意义的对话”用engage in meaningful conversations,“花时间有效地练习” 用spend time practising effectively。to engage in meaningful conversations and spend time practising effectively为真正的宾语。

One day as Ray left school, something dropped from his school uniform pocket. Bending down quickly, he picked it up and his eyes widened. The rare stamp he had lost was right there! His face turned red as he realized the truth that he must have forgotten to put it back in his bag after showing it to Toby. Memories of their argument rushed into his mind, and guilt was full of his chest. He had hurt his best friend without cause. Determined to fix things, Ray ran toward the banyan tree where Toby often sat, the stamp clutched tightly in his hand.
Seeing Ray rushing to him, Toby was surprised. “Toby, I’m so sorry!” Ray said, out of breath and holding out the stamp. “I found it in my pocket. I shouldn’t have accused you. You were right. You’d never take anything from me.” Toby stared at the stamp, then at Ray’s red eyes. A slow smile spread across his face. “It’s okay, Ray. Friends make mistakes, but we trust each other, right?” Ray nodded, and they walked back to the banyan tree, laughing as if the silence had never existed. Their bond, once broken, was now stronger than before.
