①Water pollution is a serious problem around the world, and it is difficult to deal with. Traditional water sensors (传感器) can only work in fixed places. As a result, they cannot cover large water bodies like rivers, lakes or oceans. To solve this problem, scientists created a bionic (仿生) tool-a robotic fish.
②The robotic fish is a great example of bionics. It shows how scientists copy nature to solve problems. In fact, the idea of copying nature is not new. The Wright brothers created their first plane by studying the flight of birds. Modern scientists created robotic fish by studying the swimming skills of trout (鳟鱼). Trout are good at moving fast in water with very little energy. By “learning” the way of trout moving, robotic fish can work for ten hours after they get full power.
③According to scientists, the robotic fish has a special soft tail, so it can swim quietly and smoothly under water. It will not scare water animals or harm the underwater environment. Because of the small sensors inside its “body”, it can “taste” water to find harmful things. Once the robotic fish finds water pollution, it will send a warning message to a central computer at once. The robotic fish can even “eat” small pieces of plastic in water bodies and repair itself when it gets broken. Now more and more robotic fish are widely used in rivers, lakes and oceans all over the world. They work together as a team to reduce water pollution.
④By copying nature, scientists have offered lots of possibilities for protecting the environment and improving people’s lives. As one scientist said, “Nature is our best teacher. This invention shows people’s creativity and the value of learning from nature.”

Louis Braille was born in France in 1809. At the age of three, he accidentally injured his eye while playing in his father’s workshop. The injury led to an infection that eventually caused him to lose sight in both eyes.
Despite being blind, Louis was determined to get an education. He attended a special school for blind children in Paris. There, he learned to read by feeling raised letters on paper. However, this method was slow and difficult.
At the age of 15, Louis invented a new system of reading and writing for the blind. It used patterns of six raised dots, which could be felt with the fingertips. Each pattern represented a letter, a number, or even a musical note. This system, now known as Braille, allowed blind people to read and write quickly and independently.
Louis dedicated his life to improving and promoting his system. Today, Braille is used worldwide and has opened up a world of knowledge for millions of visually impaired people. His invention proves that limitations can be overcome with creativity and determination.

Wang Yihan, a 15-year-old student from Shanghai, noticed that her grandfather, who had poor eyesight, often struggled to thread a needle (穿针). Seeing his difficulty, she decided to design a tool to help him.
In her school’s innovation club, Wang learned about 3D printing and basic engineering. She spent weeks researching existing needle threaders on the market. Most of them were either too small for elderly people to hold or broke easily. Wang wanted to create something more user-friendly.
She designed a small, brightly coloured plastic device with a large handle for easy gripping. The device has a tiny hook (钩子) that pulls the thread through the needle’s eye. Wang used a 3D printer to create several prototypes (原型). After testing and improving her design three times, she finally succeeded. Her grandfather can now thread a needle in seconds.

As one of China’s most famous inventions, papermaking is a great treasure of ancient civilization, which greatly changed human life. Before its creation, people depended on heavy bamboo slips, expensive silk, or hard animal bones to record information. These materials were either hard to carry or too costly, making it difficult for people to share knowledge widely.
The earliest paper dates back to the Western Han Dynasty. It was made from simple plant materials like hemp and rags (麻类和破布), but the quality was not good enough for daily use. This invention slowly developed, and people kept trying to find better ways to make paper.
During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cai Lun made a major improvement in papermaking. He used common and easy-to-get materials such as bark, straw, and old fishing nets. This change made paper cheaper and more practical. Soon, paper became popular among people, greatly pushing the development of education and culture.
Papermaking later spread to other countries through trade and cultural exchange. It first reached Asian countries, then spread to Europe, and finally to all parts of the world. Even today, paper remains an important part of our daily life, from books to documents. This ancient Chinese invention still shows its lasting value in connecting people and spreading knowledge.

Two Minds, Two Stories
When we think of great inventors, two names often come to mind: Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. Both were brilliant, but their approaches to creativity were very different.
Edison is known for his practical inventions, such as the light bulb and the phonograph. He believed in hard work and teamwork. He once said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration (汗水).” Edison had a large team of assistants and tested thousands of materials before finding the right one for the light bulb filament. His method was trial and error — keep trying until something works.
Tesla, on the other hand, was a dreamer. He imagined his inventions in complete detail before building them. He is known for his work on alternating current (AC) electricity, which powers most of our homes today. Tesla preferred to work alone and often spent hours visualizing his ideas in his mind. He believed that a clear mental picture was more important than physical testing.
Despite their differences, both men changed the world. Edison’s approach shows us the value of persistence and teamwork. Tesla’s approach reminds us that imagination and vision are also powerful tools. Perhaps the best way to be creative is to combine both — use your imagination to dream, and use hard work to make those dreams come true.
22.According to the passage, how did Edison and Tesla differ?
A.One was American and the other was European.
B.One worked in the 19th century and the other in the 20th.
C.One focused on practical testing and the other on mental imagining.
D.One invented the light bulb and the other invented the radio.
23.What does Edison’s famous quote “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration” suggest?
A.Inspiration is more important than hard work.
B.Hard work is more important than inspiration.
C.Geniuses do not need to work hard.
D.Perspiration is a waste of time.
24.How did Tesla often develop his inventions?
A.By testing thousands of materials. B.By working with a large team.
C.By visualizing them in his mind first. D.By copying Edison’s work.
25.The word “visualizing” in the third paragraph most probably means ________.
A.drawing pictures B.building models C.forming mental images D.writing descriptions
26.What is the writer’s final suggestion about creativity?
A.Only Edison’s method works.
B.Only Tesla’s method works.
C.We should combine imagination with hard work.
D.We should choose one method and stick to it.

The Teenager Who Saved Lions
Richard Turere was born in Kenya, a country in Africa. When he was a young boy, his family raised cows on their farm near Nairobi National Park. At night, lions often came out of the park and killed their cows. Richard’s family was very poor, and losing cows meant losing money they needed to live.
Richard tried many ways to keep the lions away. First, he used a scarecrow, but the lions soon found out it was not real. Then he built a fire, but the lions were not afraid of it. He even stayed up all night to watch the cows, but he was too tired to do this every day.
One night, Richard noticed something interesting. He was walking around with a flashlight, and the lions stayed away. He realized that the lions were afraid of the moving light. This gave him an idea. At the age of 13, Richard created the “lion lights” — a simple system of flashing lights around the farm. The lights went on and off in different patterns, making the lions think people were walking around.
Richard’s invention worked! The lions stopped coming to his family’s farm. Soon, other farmers heard about the lion lights and wanted to use them too. Richard’s simple but clever idea has now been used in many places in Kenya and other countries.
Richard’s story shows us that teenagers can make a real difference in the world. If we pay attention to the problems around us and use our creativity, we can find solutions that help both people and animals.
27.Why did Richard need to find a way to keep lions away?
A.Because the lions were killing his family’s cows. B.Because he wanted to protect the lions.

Evans Wadongo was from a village in Africa. He had to do homework by the light of a kerosene lamp (煤油灯). Evans’ eyes hurt and this made studying difficult. It was common in his village. Many children left school for this reason, so they remained poor for the rest of their lives.
Although studying was difficult, Evans was an excellent student and went to a university. He continued to worry about the kerosene lamp. By this time, he realized it was not just bad for schoolchildren but for the whole family. First, it can cause illnesses such as coughs. Also, the light can hurt people’s eyes. Besides, it can lead to fires. Lastly, kerosene is expensive, so families have less money for food. It was difficult to come up with a different kind of lamp that was cheap and good for the environment. Yet Evans did not give up.
One day, he had an idea. He could use a small solar (太阳能的) light. Sunlight is free and solar power is good for the environment. Evans built his first solar lamp, and it worked. He began to build more lamps and sent them to local families. An organization heard about this and provided money for him to build more solar lamps.
Each lamp only cost $20. However, this was a lot of money to many villagers who only earned around $34 a week, so Evans made sure he kept the cost down. First, Evans used recycled materials. Next, volunteers built the lamps. Finally, people from many countries gave away money to his team, so the lamps were usually free.

Chinese scientists have developed the world’s first robot, GEAIR, which can finish the whole plant breeding (育种) process.
It is widely known that hybrid breeding helps the new plants get the best qualities. As we see, Yuan Longping’s hybrid rice has fed a large number of Chinese people. But hybrid breeding traditionally needs workers repeatedly to do cross-pollination (异花授粉) in a short time. It takes a lot of time and energy.
GEAIR solves the problem. The robot uses AI visual (视觉的) recognition and positioning technology when moving among crops by itself. After finding flowers, it depends on robotic arms to perform cross-pollination exactly. Because of thick leaves and small flowers, traditional computer algorithms (算法) cannot easily notice them in real time. To solve this, the research team, led by Xu Cao, trained a new model using 12,800 pictures of flowers. This allows GEAIR to pollinate a flower in 15 seconds, at a cost much lower than a worker’s yearly pay.
What’s more, researchers first used gene editing (基因编辑) to redesign the structure of crop flowers for rapidly creating new flowers which are friendly to hybrid seed production by robot. This is part of their crop-robot co-design idea. Its application in bean breeding has been put into practice.
Based on biotechnology, powered by AI and operated by robots, the achievement symbolizes China has taken the lead in increasing the crop production. Reviewers of the book Cell praised the robot, expecting this exciting and innovative invention will prove its value across different crops in the future.

Thousands of people had safe light. Julia, a mother of three, said, “Thanks to Evans, my children have light to read, and I have my own light to cook.” The solar lamps made a big difference.

42.What is the main problem of traditional hybrid breeding?
A.It takes less time.
B.It costs little money.
C.It requires more energy.
D.It needs special weather.
43.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The cost of AI.
B.The number of pictures.
C.The function of the robotic arms.
D.The working process of GEAIR robot.
44.What is the “crop-robot co-design” idea?
A.It trains farmers to use robots.
B.It replaces farmers with robots.
C.It makes robots plant more seeds alone.
D.It redesigns crops to help robots work better.
45.What does the underlined word “innovative” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Creative. B.Cheap. C.Rapid. D.Traditional.
46.Which would be the best title for the text?
A.AI: A Breeding Helper
B.GEAIR: A Robotic Breeder
C.Gene Editing in Plant Breeding
D.The Difficulties in Plant Breeding

A Useful Invention
The mobile phone is one of the most useful inventions. It was invented by Martin Cooper, an American, in 1973.
Mobile phones are widely used in our daily life. They help us communicate with others easily. We can also use them to study online and relax by listening to music. Besides, they are useful for taking photos and checking maps.
As teenagers, we should use mobile phones properly. First, we should not use them on school days. Second, we need to control the time spent on phones and use them mainly for learning. In this way, mobile phones can truly become one of the most helpful inventions.

My School Invention
I have designed a useful invention called the Quiet Chair Helper. It solves the problem of noisy chairs in our classroom. A small piece made of recycled rubber is fixed under each chair leg. When a chair is moved, the rubber reduces the sound and protects the floor. I tested the first model for a week. It worked well, but one piece came off, so stronger glue will be used in the next model. The invention is simple, inexpensive and easy to repair. I hope it can make our classroom quieter.

Here is my idea for the new APP.
I suggest naming it “Happy English Learning”. The app will include a variety of content such as English news, English movies, English songs, English games and so on. There are several key advantages to this app. It makes it easy for students to study together. Besides, it helps enlarge our vocabulary through repeating the new words. It can also improve our English listening skills with a large amount of video materials. What’s more, it offers a relaxing way to learn. However, too much screen time is harmful to our eyes, so we should limit how long we students can use it each time.

I’m glad to hear that you are interested in Chinese inventions. China has a long history of innovation.
I will introduce two great inventions. First, Cai Lun improved papermaking in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Cheap paper made knowledge easy to spread all over the world. Second, ancient Chinese created the compass, popular in the Song Dynasty. It helped sailing and pushed world trade.I think papermaking is the most important. Paper carries knowledge. Hope my words help you know more. Write soon!

The Double-Edged Sword of Technology
Technology has transformed our lives in countless ways, but it is not without its downsides. Take the smartphone for example. It helps us communicate easily and access information quickly. However, spending too much time on it harms our eyes and reduces face-to-face interaction. To balance this, we should use technology wisely and set time limits. In the future, I hope technology will serve humans better without causing health problems. We must control it, not let it control us.
