Many of you must have heard of Tiangong Kaiwu. It is one of the most famous technological encyclopedias written in Chinese. But how much do you know about its author, Song Yingxing?

In his final years, he wrote many articles and poems against the Qing government. Tens of years later, some Qing officials found these articles and poems. They were so angry that they destroyed all of Song’s works. The Mayan number system appeared in the fourth century, which was about 1,000 years earlier than the time when the European number system was created. It is different from the Arabic number system with a base 10. The Mayan system had a base 20. This system is believed to have been used because the Mayans lived in such a warm area and there was hardly a need to wear shoes. 20 was the total number of fingers and toes, so the system was workable. Therefore, there were two important numbers in this system. Besides 20, the other important number is 5, which had a connection with the number of fingers and toes on one hand or foot.
The Mayan system used two symbols (符号). A dot (.) was used to mean the units (one to four) and a dash (—) meant five. The Mayans were also the first to create symbols of nothing (or zero). The most common symbol was that of a shell () but there were several other symbols (e.g. a head) . It is interesting to learn that with all of the great experts on Maths and scientists in ancient Greece and Rome, it was the Mayan Indians who came up with this symbol zero or nothing. The following picture is a form of different numbers and how they would have been written.
From further study, people found that the 360 day calendar (日历) also came from the Mayan. They actually used base 18 when they made the calendar. Each month included 20 days with 18 months in a year. This left five days at the end of the year which was a month in itself, full of danger and bad luck. In this way, the Mayans had invented the 365 day calendar.
26.What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The European number system. B.The Mayan number system.
C.The Arabic number system. D.The Mayan symbol system.
27.Why could the Mayan system be used at that time?
A.People lived in such a warm area that they didn’t need to count numbers.
B.People believed that they hardly used their fingers or toes to count numbers.
C.People thought the number of fingers and toes was enough to count numbers.
D.People found that they could use the days in a year of a calendar to count numbers.
28.Which of the following symbols means sixteen?
A. B. C. D.
29.What can we learn from the article?
A.The Mayan number system had a base 10.
B.All number systems had the same symbols.
C.There were only 360 days in the Mayan calendar.
D.The symbol of zero first appeared in the Mayan number system.
30.Where can you probably find the article?
A.A diary. B.An encyclopedia. C.A travel guide. D.A geography magazine.
【答案】26.B 27.C 28.A 29.D 30.B
根据“The Mayan number system appeared in the fourth century...It is different from the Arabic number system with a base 10. The Mayan system had a base 20.”可知,代词“It”指代的是“The Mayan number system”,故选B。
根据“This system is believed to have been used because the Mayans lived in such a warm area and there was hardly a need to wear shoes. 20 was the total number of fingers and toes, so the system was workable.”
根据“A dot (.) was used to mean the units (one to four) and a dash (—) meant five.”
根据“The Mayans were also the first to create symbols of nothing (or zero).”
C
Today, humans are the main species on Earth, but if we go back millions of years, dinosaurs ruled the planet. They remained the most important living things for about 60 million years — much longer than humans have lived. Dinosaurs died out because of something unknown long before the first humans appeared.
Back then, the Earth looked very different. Many scientists believe that all the continents were joined together as one big land. Over millions of years, these continents slowly moved apart. This movement formed the world we see today. That’s why dinosaur fossils are found everywhere. The climate was also warmer, with little temperature change. There were no clear seasons like we have now.
Dinosaurs did not live alone on Earth. They lived with many other animals. On land, there were small early mammals, flying animals, and other reptiles (e.g., crocodiles and lizards) — many still live today. In the oceans, there were many fish, sharks, and shellfish. There were also lots of plants everywhere. These plants provided enough food for all the animals and made them live a peaceful life in nature.
Why did the dinosaurs die out? There are many guesses, but no one knows the exact answer. Some scientists think a huge rock from space hit the Earth. Others believe that big volcanoes erupted and changed the climate. This mystery makes dinosaurs even more interesting to us now.
31.What can we learn about humans and dinosaurs millions of years ago?
A.Dinosaurs and humans never lived on Earth together.
B.Human activities caused the dinosaurs’ disappearance.
C.Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for a shorter time than humans have.
D.Humans and dinosaurs lived together on Earth for a short time.
32.Why are the dinosaur fossils found everywhere according to the passage?
A.People moved the fossils around. B.The continents moved slowly apart.
C.Dinosaurs travelled to different continents. D.The climate change formed different fossils.
33.What was the Earth’s climate like in the dinosaurs’ time?
A.It was much colder with longer winters. B.It was similar to today, just a little warmer.
C.It was warmer and did not have clear seasons. D.It always changed and often had bad weather.
34.Why does the writer mention “crocodiles and lizards” in paragraph 3?
A.To tell us dinosaurs looked very similar to these animals.
B.To introduce what animals in the dinosaurs’ time looked like.
C.To explain that the climate then was helpful to these animals.
D.To show that some animals in the dinosaurs’ time are still alive.
35.What is probably the best title for the passage?
A.Ancient Earth’s Climate B.Dinosaur Fossils Worldwide
C.Dinosaur Disappearance Mystery D.Dinosaurs and Their Ancient World
【答案】31.A 32.B 33.C 34.D 35.D
第一段提到:“Dinosaurs died out... long before the first humans appeared.”,说明恐龙灭绝远早于人类出现,二者不曾共存。
32.第二段提到:“these continents slowly moved apart. That’s why dinosaur fossils are found everywhere.”,说明大陆缓慢分离是化石遍布各地的原因。
33.第二段提到:“The climate was also warmer... There were no clear seasons like we have now.”,说明当时气候更温暖,无分明四季。
34.第三段提到:“other reptiles (e.g., crocodiles and lizards) — many still live today.”,举例证明恐龙时代的部分生物至今依然存在。
Do you like the number 13? 36 In the past, a lot of tall buildings didn’t have the 13th floor. 37 For example, the number “4” is said to be unlucky because it sounds like the Chinese word for “death”. But that’s just one example about numbers in China.
When I first came here, I was surprised to see that many websites had numbers in their names instead of letters. I soon found that this is actually convenient, as Chinese characters (汉字) cannot be used for website addresses. 38
In pinyin, the telecom company China Unicom is called Zhongguo Liantong. If the company used their pinyin name for their website address, it would be quite long. 39
In addition, the pronunciations of some numbers sound similar to other words in Chinese. This is wordplay (双关语). For example, the numbers “520” in Chinese sound similar to the pronunciation of the Chinese phrase “I love you”. 40
A.They can only use numbers or letters instead.
B.There are also superstitions (迷信) about some numbers in China.
C.In western countries, some people think the number 13 brings bad luck.
D.It is interesting to see how Chinese people use numbers in different ways.
E.So instead, they used the hotline number—10010.com. This is easier to type and remember.
F.Many couples choose to get married on May 20th for this reason.
【答案】36.C 37.B 38.A 39.E 40.F
根据上文“Do you like the number 13? ”可知,此处是人们对于数字13的看法;选项C“在西方国家,有些人认为数字13会带来厄运。”符合语境。故选C。
37.根据下文“For example, the number ‘4’ is said to be unlucky because it sounds like the Chinese word for ‘death’.”
38.根据上文“I soon found that this is actually convenient, as Chinese characters (汉字) cannot be used for website addresses.” 故选A。
39.根据上文“If the company used their pinyin name for their website address, it would be quite long.”
40.根据上文“For example, the numbers ‘520’ in Chinese sound similar to the pronunciation of the Chinese phrase ‘I love you’. ”可知,520的谐音是“我爱你”;选项F“出于这个原因,许多情侣选择在5月20日结婚。”符合语境。故选F。

第二节 回答问题(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
Let’s read about some of these amazing animals.
You probably know that the world’s fastest animal is the cheetah. Cheetahs can run at about 120 kilometres an hour. However, when they run, they spend more time in the air than on the ground. For this reason, they can only run at that speed for about 60 seconds.
The largest animal in the world is the blue whale. Blue whales aren’t just the largest species (物种) right now. They are the largest animals that have ever existed (已经存在) on Earth. Blue whales are about 38 metres long, and they can weigh as much as 200 tons. Blue whales eat around four tons of food every day.
Of course, the smartest animals in the world are humans. The second smartest animal is the chimpanzee (黑猩猩). Chimpanzees can make tools and build things. They can also solve problems. They can even use sign language for communication if taught (被教). Dolphins and parrots are also smart.
Most people believe that tortoises live the longest. The oldest tortoise that we know turned 192 years old in 2024. However, some ocean animals live longer. Some koi, a kind of goldfish, can live for more than 200 years. There’s even a kind of jellyfish that can change its cells (细胞) and make them new again. This means that whenever the jellyfish gets old and weak, it can make itself young again! The nickname of this jellyfish is “immortal jellyfish”.
46.Why can cheetahs only run at their top speed for about 60 seconds?
47.What is the cleverest animal in the world?
48.What does the underlined word mean?
49.What other kinds of the most amazing animals or plants in the world do you know? Tell us.
50.Which animal is the second smartest in the world?
46.Because when they run, they spend more time in the air than on the ground. 47.Humans are the cleverest animals in the world. 48.It means never dying. 49.The giant panda is one of the most amazing animals, which is native to China. 50.The chimpanzee is the second smartest animal in the world.
第二段第2-4句“Cheetahs can run at about 120 kilometres an hour. However, when they run, they spend more time in the air than on the ground. For this reason, they can only run at that speed for about 60 seconds.”
47.第四段第1句“Of course, the smartest animals in the world are humans.”
48.第五段最后一句“The nickname of this jellyfish is ‘immortal jellyfish’.”
50.第四段第2句“The second smartest animal is the chimpanzee.”

Many of you must have heard of Tiangong Kaiwu. It is one of the most famous technological encyclopedias written in Chinese. But how much do you know about its author, Song Yingxing?
Song was a great scientist during the late Ming dynasty. He was born into an ordinary family in 1587 and had a happy childhood. He and his brother Song Yingsheng went to school together. Both of them were very intelligent. Song won the third place while his brother won the sixth in the provincial Imperial Exam Later, Song and his brother took the national Imperial Exam, but they both failed. They had no choice but to work for the provincial government.
Song worked as a teacher for many years. Meanwhile, he took the national Imperial Exam for another four times. Unluckily, he never achieved success. After going to the capital for some times, he learned about many technologies in different fields. His wide knowledge allowed him to create Tiangong Kaiwu in the 1630s.
The name of the Chinese encyclopedia is about people using the wealth (财富) of nature with the help of technologies. It talks about technologies in a clear way. There are also many pictures to help with the understanding of the text. The encyclopedia became popular soon after it was produced and sold to the public.
The Ming dynasty fell in 1644, but Song and his brother refused to work for the new Qing government and gave up their jobs. Song lived a poor life until the day he died. In his final years, he wrote many articles and poems against the Qing government. Tens of years later, some Qing officials found these articles and poems. They were so angry that they destroyed all of Song’s works. Finally, Chinese people could be impressed by this great scientist again.

C.Dinosaur Disappearance Mystery D.Dinosaurs and Their Ancient World
Do you like the number 13?

Recently, our school has made a survey on “The Greatest Person in My Mind” among 200 students. The results show that the most popular figure is Qian Xuesen, receiving 45% of the votes, Leonardo da Vinci with 30%, and Shen Kuo with 25%.
Qian Xuesen, who was born in Shanghai on Dec 11, 1911 and passed away in Beijing on Oct 31,2009, is remembered as a great scientist in the aerospace industry. Many students admire him because he devoted his life to the development of science and technology, making China stronger and more advanced in space exploration. Leonardo da Vinci, an Italian painter, inventor and engineer, is famous for his incredible artistic talent and inventions. Shen Kuo, a scholar from the Song Dynasty, is known for his work Dream Brook Sketch. His influence can still be seen today.
In my opinion, Qian Xuesen is the greatest due to his important role in advancing China’s technology, inspiring future scientists.
