【改编自译林必修一U2】
Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home.
“For the rent.” Mama would count out the big silver pieces.
“For the groceries.” Another group of coins.
“I'll need a notebook.” That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.
Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with anxious interest. At last, Papa would ask, “Is that all?” And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little. Mama would look up and smile, “Good. We do not have to go to the Bank.” We were all so proud of Mama's Bank Account. It gave us such a warm, secure feeling.
When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. “It will cost a little money,” he said.
Eagerly we gathered around the table. I took down a box and laid it carefully in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank”. It was used for sudden emergencies, such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to be taken to a doctor.
Nels listed the costs of the things he would need. Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough. “We do not want to go to the Bank,” she reminded. We all shook our heads.
“I will work in Dillon's grocery after school,” Nels volunteered.
Mama gave him a bright smile and wrote down a number. “That's not enough,” Papa said. Then he took his pipe out of his mouth and looked at it for a long time. “I will give up smoking,” he said suddenly.
Mama reached across the table and touched Papa's arm. Then she wrote down another figure.
“I will look after the Elvington children every Friday night,” I said. “Christine can help me.”
Now there was enough money. We all felt very good because we did not have to go downtown and draw money out of Mama's Bank Account.
So many things came out of the Little Bank that year: Christine's dress for the school play, my little sister Dagmar's operation...Whatever happened, we always knew we still had the Bank to depend upon.

Josie, who is 17 years old, said, “Why do my parents do the same things they tell me not to do? For example, my mum stops me from shouting through the walls and asks me to go and speak to her face-to-face, but she always shouts through the walls to me. What can I do?”
That is a very good point. Parents can be completely inconsistent (不一致), and usually they don't realize it. You see this a lot in many things like smartphones. Parents always say to their kids, “Oh, you can't use that. That device is bad for you, so stop using it at the table. It's harmful.” But then they are on theirs continually. So what do you expect teenagers to do?
The whole “Do as I say, not as I do” thing is an annoyance (烦恼), especially for a teenager who is dying for independence and respect but isn't getting them.
What can teenagers do with it? I would say you should point it out by calmly saying something like “You tell me not to scream through the walls, but you do it to me, so you can understand where I'm coming from. That's not ideal.” They might object to it, but I think most parents who care about being parents would logically say, “That's a reasonable point.”
There are a lot of conflicts (矛盾) going on between teenagers and their parents, but a lot of studies show that the conflicts are resolved a lot more when they turn into a dialogue.
If you can talk at a time when you're both feeling a bit calmer, like just in the kitchen or doing something unimportant, then go in and say, “Can I just mention it? You tell me not to do this, but you do it too.” If you can approach it in a more calm and stress-free manner, most parents will respond positively.

(2026·成都高一期中)According to an international study, children who feel more connected to their families are more likely to flourish (茁壮成长).
Robert Whitaker and colleagues at Columbia University in New York surveyed over 37,000 children aged 11 to 13 in 26 countries about family connections and flourishing. The children were asked to rate their family connections on a five-point scale (等级) with statements like “My family cares about me” and “I feel safe at home”. They were also asked to rate their growth on a 0-10 scale with statements like “I like myself” and “I'm positive about my future”. Based on their answers, the researchers got “family connection” and “flourishing” scores for each child.
They found a connection between the two scores. Children with the strongest family bonds were 49% more likely to flourish than those with the weakest.
“I think it's an important finding because it shows that providing a caring family environment isn't just about avoiding the negative things, it's also about building kids' abilities,” says Sanders at the University of Queensland in Australia.
Children with good family relationships are probably more likely to flourish because they have “an internal sense of safety”, says the researchers. This sense of safety allows children to understand who they are and accept who they are, and to grow and learn, have positive relationships and develop a sense of mastery and purpose.
Not having to worry about home life also means children can devote more mental energy to learning, socializing and “spreading their wings”, says Sanders.
To develop healthy family relationships, Whitaker says the best thing that parents and other caregivers can do is to spend quality time with children. This can involve simple activities like having meals, going for walks or doing chores together. “Being present, open, interested and attentive at these times is the foundation of family connection,” he says.
