The fungus killed any bacteria colony it touched. Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin”, and created the new field of antibiotics(抗生素). That's how most people see innovation: a flash of brilliance and a “eureka moment” when a new world is born in an instant. The truth, however, is not that simple. It wasn't until 1943 that penicillin came into widespread use. To put Fleming's discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards(产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving criticism instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular theory, which suggested that disease resulted from “bad air”. After his death in 1865, the germ(细菌) theory was finally accepted, paving the way for Fleming's later work. Fleming was a gifted biologist but a poor communicator. When he published his results in 1929, few took notice. In 1935, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain discovered Fleming's paper, understood its importance, and developed methods to produce penicillin in quantity. By 1943, with World War Ⅱ going on fiercely, the War Production Board asked 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics. Fleming, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945.  Penicillin's success owes much to the government support. For many other groundbreaking innovations like the Internet and GPS, their innovators, while carving their own path, are often uncertain of where the opportunity lies until they team up with other informed officials and big firms that might have the resources to turn their ideas into reality quickly. So, look at any significant innovation and the myth of the lone genius, and the “eureka moment” breaks down. 1.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about? A.A definition of a traditional concept. B.A description of a lab story. C.A correction of a common misunderstanding. D.An analysis of a scientific phenomenon. 2.What message is conveyed in paragraph 3? A.Great minds think alike. B.The early bird catches the worm. C.A stroke of luck paves the way for success. D.Early work contributes to later breakthroughs. 3.What does the underlined part “ushering in” in paragraph 4 mean? A.Predicting. B.Starting. C.Delaying. D.Transforming. 4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Great Innovation: Individuals Are True Heroes B.From Failure to Success: The Story of Penicillin C.The Lone Genius: Fleming's Discovery of Penicillin D.The Long Road to Penicillin: How Innovation Happens Ⅱ.七选五 (2024河南省实验中学期中) Believe it or not, although success may look different to everyone, there is a common list of tips for achieving success. Once you learn how to succeed, you can apply these tools to bringing about success in different areas of your life. 1 They are used by successful athletes, businessmen and artists.  Make a plan. This means having a clear picture of what a successful life looks like and putting together a well-defined set of goals to get you to that if. Planning well starts with figuring out what you want and writing it down in detail. It's important to have clarity on your idea of success. 2 To succeed means accomplishing a goal. Therefore, if you don't set goals, you'll never succeed.   3 This can make the difference between your plans ending in failure and succeeding despite a bump(隆起) in the road. So start by making a list of things that could go wrong in your plan. Then create workarounds and backups(备用计划) for each potential problem.  Learn from your mistakes. 4 At the same time, each piece of failure on that road probably looks different from the other pieces. Success most likely comes by way of trying (and failing) many different ways. Failure is part of the process of becoming successful if you make it a teacher. Learning and growing after failure makes it useful.  Master how to say no. If you listen to interviews with successful people, you'll probably hear them talk about turning down great opportunities that they know aren't right for them. Saying no means knowing your boundaries(界限) and being able to determine what is worth your time and energy. 5    A.Take smart risks. B.Prepare for the unexpected. C.This is the foundation for your plan. D.It leaves room for the right opportunity. E.The road to success is paved with failure. F.Success is within reach if you devote all your efforts to it. G.The tips listed below will help you unlock success in your life. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.         Ⅲ.完形填空 (2024安徽省“江南十校”联考) 23-year-old Ganesh Baraiya is living proof that nothing is impossible. It's important to have clarity on your idea of success.” 3.B 根据下文“This can make the difference between your plans ending in failure and succeeding despite a bump in the road. So start by making a list of things that could go wrong in your plan. Then create workarounds and backups for each potential problem.” 4.E 根据下文“At the same time, each piece of failure on that road...Failure is part of the process of becoming successful if you make it a teacher. Learning and growing after failure makes it useful.” 5.D 根据空前的“If you listen to interviews with successful people, you'll probably hear them talk about turning down great opportunities that they know aren't right for them. Saying no means knowing your boundaries and being able to determine what is worth your time and energy.” 【高频词汇】 1.suffer from患有 2.prevent...from doing sth. 根据下文中的“because of his short stature”可知,Ganesh Baraiya身材矮小,由此可推断,此处指的是因身材矮小而受到“歧视”。 根据上文中的“He was born normal.”可知,他生下来是正常的,结合下文中的“at the age of four, his parents noticed that his head was 3 his body, so they took him to see a doctor”可知,在他四岁的时候,由于身体的异样,父母带他去看医生,上下文之间为转折关系,空后有逗号,所以使用however。故选A。 根据下文中的“because of his large head and short stature”可知,他有个大头和短小的身体,由此可推断,此处指的是他的头“比身体长得快”。 根据上文中的“his parents noticed that his head was outgrowing his body”可知,他的父母发现他的头比身体长得快,结合“Ganesh's mother put a tube-like helmet on his head to prevent it from growing and give his body a chance”可知,由于头比身体长得快,所以他的妈妈给他的头上戴一个管状的头盔,防止他的头长大,这样可以给身体一个“赶上”的机会。故选A。 根据下文中的“because of his large head and short stature”可知,由于他的大头和短小的身体,所以同学们“取笑”他。 根据上文中的“he was...but he also had friends”以及下文中的“and so he was able to focus on his studies”可知,虽然有学生因他头大身体小取笑他,但也有朋友“支持”他,这样他能专心学习。 根据上文中的“Despite his physical limitations”可知,他身体有缺陷,此空与上文为让步关系,结合下文中的“He knew he wanted to be a doctor from a very young age”可知,他从很小的时候就想成为一名医生,由此可知,他是很“有雄心的”。 根据下文中的“because of his dwarfism(侏儒症)”以及“the Medical Council of India rejected his application”可知,印度医学委员会拒绝了他的申请,由此可知,此处指的是因患有侏儒症而被“拒绝”。故选A。 根据上文中的“the Medical Council of India rejected his application because of his height”可知,印度医学委员会拒绝了他的申请,结合下文中的“that he wouldn't be able to perform his duties in emergency cases”可知,说他不能在紧急情况下履行职责,所以此处给出的是拒绝他的申请的理由,由此可知,此处应为“声称”。 根据上文中的“With the help of his school principal”以及下文中的“then the State Education Minister, and 12 knocked on the door of the Gujarat High Court”可知,此处指的是在校长的帮助下,他为自己的梦想所作出的努力,所以此处应为“联系了”地区行政长官。 根据上文中的“the District Collector, then the State Education Minister”以及下文中的“knocked on the door of the Gujarat High Court”可知,从地区行政长官、州教育部长到古吉拉特邦高等法院,一个比一个级别高,所以此处应为“甚至”,表示递进关系。 根据上文中的“he 11 the District Collector, then the State Education Minister, and 12 knocked on the door of the Gujarat High Court”可知,他联系了地区行政长官,然后是州教育部长,甚至敲响了古吉拉特邦高等法院的门,结合下文中的“but he refused to give up”可知,他却没有放弃,由此可推断,他所作出的努力“全没有”成功。故选A。 根据下文中的“In 2018, India's Supreme Court awarded Ganesh the right to enroll in MBBS, and he did just that the following year.” 根据上文中的“He knew he wanted to be a doctor from a very young age”可知,他从小就想成为一名医生,由此可知,此处指的是他从小就“怀有”的梦想。
