Winning the T.S. Eliot Prize came as a shock to American poet Peter Gizzi. “I had zero expectations,” he said. In fact, Gizzi said he almost cried when his name was read out for his collection Fierce Elegy.
Born in Michigan in 1959, Gizzi delayed going to college and instead joined a music community in New York. As someone who didnt grow up in a poetry-heavy background, Gizzi wasnt surprised by some criticism. Even his personal favorites are “outsider poets”. “The poets that have influenced me are not totally unknown, but theyre definitely not big award-winning poets like Louise Glück,” said Gizzi.
Poetry first came into Gizzis life in heartbreaking circumstances when his father died in a plane crash. It was when his brother Michael, also a noted poet, wrote a piece called Requiem in March, that Gizzi realized the possibilities of what poetry could do. He realized poetry was the way. A light came on and he has never stopped reading since then.
Many of the poems in Fierce Elegy try to grasp what might be beyond death. For Gizzi, the elegy (挽歌) can be a tool that helps us to understand life in a deeper way. It also allows us to see the small joys that compose a life, and how those small joys are actually massive. “Joy and sorrow share a very complex ecosystem. We cant have one without the other. As the world becomes constantly renewed, its also constantly dying,” he said. “I believe the elegy can take a broken heart in a fierce world and transform it into a fierce heart in a broken world.”
George Oppen, an American poet, said, “I like all the little words: tree, house, hill. These are the words in which we live. Gizzi says more by saying less. Poems are as much about whats not there as whats there, right?”
1.What can we infer about Gizzi from paragraph 2?
A.He admired the works of famous poets.
B.He preferred the traditional way of poetry.
C.He took an unconventional path into poetry.
D.He followed professional advice to be a poet.
2.What caused Gizzi to realize the power of poetry?
A.His fathers death. B.The collection Fierce Elegy.
C.His literary background. D.The poem Requiem in March.
3.How does Gizzi describe the relationship between joy and sorrow?
A.They are closely connected. B.They are merely personal.
C.They are constantly changing. D.They are often misunderstood.
4.What does George Oppen think of Gizzis poems?
A.Bright and energetic. B.Formal and emotional.
C.Brief and meaningful. D.Dramatic and powerful.

Today, poetry and science are often considered to be completely separate career paths. However, that wasnt always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. Similarly, the poet John Keats was also a licensed surgeon. The combination of these disciplines fell out of favor in the 1800s. Recently, however, there has been a reappearance of interest among scientists in expressing their research through poetry, such as lyrics and haiku, as alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
“Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world,” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and geoscientist who works at Edinburgh Napier University. Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki, participated in one of Illingworths workshops where she and fellow scientists were tasked with writing a haiku that highlighted water, a common theme in their research. “It was fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem,” Mazon says. She plans to continue writing. “It does harm to us to think that scientists cant be artistic and that art cant be used to communicate scientific ideas,” Mazon says.
That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides. “Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it creates a two-way dialogue between experts and non-experts,” he says. Scientist-poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees, noting that poetry simplifies complex scientific concepts into language that everyone can understand.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding to others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. Were all just people hopefully with really interesting things to say and to share.
5.What trend has been observed recently among scientists?
A.A decline in interest in poetry and science. B.A preference for traditional research methods.
C.An increase in combining science and poetry. D.A focus on historical figures like Ada Lovelace.
6.How does Sam Illingworth bridge the gap between science and the public?
A.By translating classic poetry into different languages.
B.By teaching at Edinburgh Napier University.
C.By advocating more funding for geoscience research.
D.By organizing workshops and publishing a science-poetry journal.
7.How did Stephany Mazon feel about the experience of writing a haiku in the workshop?
A.It was challenging and difficult. B.It was enjoyable and straightforward.
C.It was a waste of time. D.It was too artistic for her taste.
8.What is one advantage of using poetry for science communication?
A.It simplifies complex scientific ideas for a general audience.
B.It promotes academic research in universities.
C.It replaces boring traditional science textbooks.
D.It emphasizes the significance of public lectures.
