For decades, a popular theory about why birds sing at dawn—called the dawn chorus (破晓时的鸟鸣声)—has been that they can be heard farther and more clearly at that time. Sound travels faster in humid (温暖潮湿的) air and it's more humid early in the morning. It's less windy, too, which is thought to lessen any distortion (失真) of their sounds. But scientists in India studied audio(声音的) recordings of birds in the rainforest. They said they didn't detect proof of supporting this idea about sound traveling better. It was one of the ideas about environmental factors. Another idea is that birds sing at dawn because it's too dark to look for food. “We didn't find much support for some of these environmental reasons suggested in past studies for birds singing more at dawn,” said Vijay Ramesh, a researcher at Cornell University. The researchers didn't find one clear reason why the dawn chorus happens, but they found some support for the idea that the early morning noise is about birds marking their territory after being inactive at night and talking about finding food. The team analyzed recordings from audio recorders placed at 43 locations in the Western Ghats mountain range in southern India, which is known as a biodiversity hotspot. They examined sounds of what they determined were 69 different species of birds. They studied recordings from the hours around dawn and the hours around dusk to compare activities. Unsurprisingly to anyone who's been roused by bird calls, the vast majority of species they studied had significantly higher vocal activities at dawn compared to dusk. 1.Why did Indian scientists conduct research on birds in the rainforest? A.To record the sounds of rare bird species. B.To prove sound travels faster in humid air. C.To explore the reasons for birds' dawn chorus. D.To find out the best time for the dawn chorus. 2.What can be inferred from the findings of the study? A.Birds' dawn singing may serve social functions. B.The old theory about the dawn chorus is true. C.Birds are less active at dusk due to light. D.All birds sing to mark territory at dawn. 3.What was the researchers' approach in the study? A.They observed birds' feeding habits in the morning. B.They conducted experiments in a laboratory setting. C.They tracked birds' movements in different countries. D.They analyzed audio recordings from tens of locations. 4.What does the underlined word “roused” in the last paragraph mean? A.Reminded. B.Waken up. C.Threatened. D.Stirred up. Ⅱ.七选五 (2026安徽阜阳期中) At the time of this year when many gardeners are harvesting tomatoes, gardening expert Jessica Damiano reported many pictures of strangely shaped tomatoes sent to her from fans of her gardening advice. 1 The good news, Damiano said, is that there is nothing wrong with the strangely shaped fruits. Unless otherwise diseased, they are perfectly good for eating. Their unusual appearance does not affect their taste or nutritional value. 2   However, what causes the unusual appearance of tomatoes? If you have ever cut open a tomato, you know they are divided into parts, called locules. 3 Some kinds of the fruit, like cherry tomatoes, contain two or three. But when a plant experiences extreme temperature, the process of cell division in the developing fruit can go off track. Temperatures over 32 ℃ during the day and 27 ℃ overnight can lead the tomato to form an extra locule. But there is not enough room inside a tomato for the extra part, so it grows on the outside of the fruit.   4 What are the possibilities? According to Timothy McDermott, a professor at The Ohio State University, under certain conditions, when the weather is too hot or too cold, one or two tomatoes per plant could be affected. 5 The possibility of one of your tomatoes developing an extra locule is about one in a thousand, McDermott said. In fact, any tomato can grow an extra locule. But Damiano noted a hybrid(杂交种) seems less likely to have this deformation(畸形).  A.Most tomatoes have about four or five locules. B.But always let the good-looking ones be your first choice. C.She said people questioned whether the tomatoes were okay to eat. D.Not every tomato on an affected plant will be deformed, however. E.It is advised to give your plants more water when the weather is too hot. F.It depends on where they are in the development process and the weather. G.So when harvesting, remember the funny-looking tomatoes taste just as good. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.     Ⅲ.完形填空 (2025广东广州三校期中联考) One day, I was standing on the boat when a giant female leopard seal swam by. At first, I couldn't even move.” 2.B 根据下文“I jumped into the freezing water. Immediately, the seal swam toward me.” 3.A 根据下文“she let go of my head”可知,海豹把作者头部(head)的很大一部分放进了嘴里。 4.D 根据上文“Although the seal was putting me at risk”可知,此处与上文构成转折关系,指作者试图保持镇静,不显露出(reveal)害怕。 6.D 根据上文“swam away”和下文“with a live penguin. She even tried to show me how to 7 it.” 7.A 根据上文“Then she 6 with a live penguin. She even tried to show me how to”和下文“She tried to push the penguin into my camera—she thought the camera was my 8 !” 10.A 根据上文“The seal thought I was just another large animal, and she was trying to 9 me, I realized.” come back回来;come across偶遇;come up走上前来;come over拜访。故选C。 12.B 根据上文“She made a deep, threatening sound and”和下文“it away”可知,海豹发出低沉且具有威胁性的声音并驱赶另一只海豹。 13.C 根据下文“I got some amazing pictures.” 14.D 根据上文“She tried to push the penguin into my camera...I realized.”及“I also learned that animals do not always behave the way we”可知,作者发现动物的行为出乎意料,并不总是像我们预期(expect)的那样。
