Clementine seemed to be missing a piece from her life’s puzzle for most of her life. As a 3-year-old homeless dog near New Orleans, the dog stayed in the shelter for four months before being moved to Texas.
While living at an adoption center in Texas, the dog was adopted twice by different families. Sadly, neither of those adoptions were successful. It turned out Clementine didn’t get along with smaller pets, and she had too much energy for the second family.
Meanwhile, Captain Robert Moree wanted to add a fire dog to the station. He’d just read a study about how dogs help firefighters deal with the pressure of their jobs, and he was eager to give the study a real-life trial run! With the permission of the chief and other firefighters, he and a few colleagues visited the shelter. As soon as they met Clementine, they were smitten!
“They introduced us to Clementine,” Captain Moree recalled. “She started to like us, and we liked her instantly. Later that day, my driver, Bryan Wallen, and I decided to get her.”
Captain Moree officially adopted Clementine, but she definitely belonged to every person in the firehouse. She loved to hug the firefighters in between calls, and she was always nearby whenever anyone was preparing food. “She rides on the truck when we go out on call,” said Captain Moree. “She not only makes the station feel more like home during our 24-hour shifts but also keeps us excited to come to the station.”
Clementine has made such an amazing journey from a homeless dog to a hero dog. She was named Dog of the Year at the 2022 ASPCA Humane Awards!
24.Why did Clementine fail to stay in the second family?
A.She was too active. B.She liked fire.

A tiny Alaskan village has experienced a boom in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.
More than 2,000 people visited the northern Alaskan village of Kaktovik in 2018 to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community lies in an area where increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond the continental shelf(大陆架), more bears are remaining on land to look for food.
Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but villagers started noticing a change in the mid-1990s. More bears seemed to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making homes in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies. Biologists of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began hearing reports of the increasing number of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s. As more attention was given to the plight(困境) of polar bears about a decade ago, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.
“The village had fewer than 50 visitors annually before 2011,” said Jennifer Reed of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. “Today we’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of visitors, many from around the world each year,” said Reed. Most tourists visit in the fall, when bears are forced toward land because sea ice is farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who sometimes offers wildlife-viewing tours, said, “I have been offering polar bear tours since 2004.” Most of his clients(客户) are from China and Europe, as well as from other states of US. Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels. The villagers have benefited a lot from that. In turn, they provide more effective protection for polar bears with financial support from tourism development.
28.What causes more polar bears to stay on land in Kaktovik?
A.Climate change. B.Food shortages.
C.Their preference for land. D.Habitats’ movement to shore.
29.How did common people feel about more sights of bears on land?
A.Excited. B.Puzzled.
C.Shocked. D.Concerned.
30.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Tourism affects the balance of nature.
B.Kaktovik has about 50 visitors annually.
C.Hotels in Kaktovik are in demand in autumn.
D.Inglangasak makes a living as a tour guide only.
31.Which saying can describe the text?
A.The fittest can survive.
B.Every coin has two sides.
C.After a storm comes a calm.
D.One man’s fault is another man’s lesson.
D
Can an AI chatbot enhance personal creativity? Supporters of artificial intelligence see it as an inspiration, but critics doubt it, saying it does little more than remix(合成) existing work.
To gather data on this question, Oliver Hauser, an economist at the University of Exeter, and Anil Doshi at University College London School of Management invited 300 non-professional writers to write an eight-sentence story. One-third of the participants needed to generate ideas independently, while others received starter ideas from ChatGPT 4.0. The AI-assisted group was divided into two subgroups: one received a single AI-generated idea and the other could choose from up to five. Most importantly, both the human-only and AI-assisted groups had to rewrite the stories themselves.
Assessed by 600 evaluators(评价者), each story was graded on “novelty” and “usefulness”. Novelty reflected originality, while usefulness showed if the story was of publishable quality. According to the results, AI-assisted stories scored higher in both categories. Writers with access to one AI-generated idea performed better, but those with five ideas saw the most improvement—they wrote stories seen as about 8% more novel and 9% more useful than independent stories. But there’s a plot twist: When Hauser and Doshi looked at all the stories, they found a different effect. “Generally speaking, there was a lower level of novelty in the group that had AI,” Hauser says.
In other words, while the chatbot enhanced creativity individually, it reduced the overall creativity of the AI-assisted group. Hauser describes this as a “classic social dilemma” where individuals benefit, but the group suffers. “We do worry that, on a large scale, if many people are using this, the overall diversity and creativity of the population will go down,” he says.
Annalee Newitz, a science fiction author and journalist, pointed out that she wouldn’t blame anyone who tried using AI to write a story. However, she thinks these tools miss the point of writing. “Creative writing is humans communicating with other humans,” Newitz says. “Even if something is badly written—even if not very creative—if it’s written by a human, then it’s fulfilling its purpose.”
32.What can we learn about Hauser and Doshi’s study?
A.Each participant’s story was graded by professionals.
B.Not all the participants needed to generate ideas independently.
C.Each participant’s story was evaluated in three different aspects.
D.Human-written stories were as novel and useful as AI-assisted stories.
33.According to the study results, which group performed best in “novelty” and “usefulness”?
A.Writers who generated ideas independently.
B.Writers who combined human and AI-generated ideas.
C.Writers who chose from up to five AI-generated ideas.
D.Writers who received one AI-generated idea.
34.Which of the following would Annalee Newitz probably agree with?
A.AI should be avoided in creating stories.
B.Creative writing loses its value when assisted by AI.
C.AI is important for improving the quality of creative works.
D.The point of creative writing lies in human-to-human communication.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Nature of Creative Writing
B.The Future of Human Creativity
C.AI Boosts Creativity, but at a Cost
D.Humans Battle Against AI in Writing

Willpower means the ability to control your own behavior to achieve your goals. It also means fighting against temptations(诱惑) so that you can stay on task. 36 Overall, it’s the ability to fight against present pleasure to achieve long-term goals.
Other definitions include the ability to stand an unwanted thought or feeling, the ability to use a “cool” cognitive system of behavior rather than a “hot” emotional system, and the mindful, effortful self-control. Some researchers believe that willpower is partly decided by genetics(遗传学). 37
Some psychologists have said that willpower can promise success in life. In psychologist Walter Mischel’s test, pre-school-aged kids were placed in a room with a bowl of marshmallows (棉花糖) on the table. The kids were told they could either eat one right away or wait 15 minutes and get two. Several years later, researchers made known the result. 38 And these benefits seem to go well beyond childhood and teenage years.
39 It allows you to pursue your goals and enjoy the sense of achievement that comes from reaching them. It can improve your subjective well-being and help you feel happier and more satisfied.
There are several things you can do to improve your self-control. Think of willpower as a muscle. 40 Then get enough sleep. Bad sleeping habits wear you out, both physically and mentally. This influences your ability to fight against temptations. Overall, remember that you can strengthen your self-control through practice and self-care.
A.You can beat any enemy with it.
B.Willpower influences every area of your life.
C.Self-control is beneficial to kids’ schoolwork.

Dogs can do so much for us, whether they’re service dogs that can help with mental health problems or search and rescue dogs saving lives during a natural disaster. However, sometimes dogs are the ones who need a helping hand from us.
This year, I visited the Rochdale Canal(运河) in Manchester with my two friends, Jack and Ben, where we could film lots of beautiful scenes. At the end of the visit, we managed to seek out a place to have a rest. Suddenly, we saw a man lying and struggling with a leash(拴狗链) over a wall. When we got closer, we realized the man was in trouble. At that time, I just took my camera to film some beautiful scenes.
The man held the leash tightly to try to keep his dog from being dragged away. The dog fell into the canal, struggling to catch the leash. Obviously, the man was panicking(惊慌). With the camera put on the wall, we quickly jumped in to help. We couldn’t let that dog down without help. I climbed down the canal first. However, the wall of the canal was too high, so I was not enough to get the dog. We noticed the man in pain and the dog desperately moved his back legs in search of the ground.
Finally, my friend, Jack, was seized by a sudden inspiration.
“I am the tallest of us. I am dangled(悬挂) upside down by the legs and you can drag my legs so I could reach the dog,” Jack said excitedly.
“That is a good idea,” the man said happily.

根据Poison Dart Frog部分中的“It is a very beautiful creature. The bright colors of the poison dart frog send a warning to its natural enemies about its poison.” 故选A。
B
根据第二段中的“It turned out Clementine didn’t get along with smaller pets, and she had too much energy for the second family.” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“He’d just read a study about how dogs help firefighters deal with the pressure of their jobs, and he was eager to give the study a real-life trial run!”
根据画线词下文“She started to like us, and we liked her instantly.”
根据倒数第二段中的“She not only makes the station feel more like home...keeps us excited to come to the station.”和最后一段中的“She was named Dog of the Year at the 2022 ASPCA Humane Awards!”
根据第二段中的“increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice...more bears are remaining on land...” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“As more attention was given to the plight of polar bears...more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.”
根据最后一段中的“Most tourists visit in the fall”和“Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels.”
根据第二段中的“One-third of the participants needed to generate ideas independently, while others received starter ideas from ChatGPT 4.0.”
根据第三段中的“Writers with access to one AI-generated idea performed better, but those with five ideas saw the most improvement...about 8% more novel and 9% more useful...”
根据最后一段中的“However, she thinks these tools miss the point of writing. ‘Creative writing is humans communicating with other humans,’”可推测,Annalee Newitz可能认同创意写作的意义在于人与人之间的交流这一观点。

36.F 上文“Willpower means the ability to control...so that you can stay on task.”
37.E 上文“Some researchers believe that willpower is partly decided by genetics.”

One possible version:
We carried out our plan immediately. Jack was dangled upside down by the legs and we dragged his legs so that he could lower himself into the canal. He got hold of the dog’s collar with his right hand, and placed his left hand under the dog’s front legs for support. Jack was then pulled up by us, and the dog was safe and sound. The crowd who had gathered around clapped and cheered for us. Afterwards, both the dog and the owner were so happy that they ran around the canal in celebration. At the same time, I realized my camera had filmed the whole event. All of us felt excited.
The video of the moving rescue was posted online after we came back home. We found it had raised much attention and many people watched it and left comments. It has earned over 75,000 likes, with dozens of people praising the efforts of us who put ourselves in danger to save the dog, which made us surprised and delighted. It was a precious experience and left us with wonderful memories. We only did what anyone else would do.

Where did you meet these kids . at the primary school down the street? I visited one of their classes in the morning when they were singing. Then I taught them some simple english in the afternoon. What did you teach them? I wrote some sentences and shouted them. Then the kids shouted them back at me. They were very cute, although sometimes their pronunciation didn't make sense. That's great. I think we can add some reflections on the experience to our paper. Good idea. Let's complete our paper today so that we don't need to worry about IT in the coming graduation party. Hi, jane. First, i'd like to remind everyone that the main purpose of a weather warning system is to tell people outdoors to move inside. Now it's important to remember that we will test the system every saturday at noon, so don't worry about the noise at that time. It's a good idea to go outside and listen when we test the system and make sure you can hear them in your neighbourhood. Remember that the loud noise is only one part of the warning system. The loud noises are started by city officials after we receive warnings from the national weather service. In other words, you might hear a warning on the national news before you hear a warning here. If you do here one, what should you do? First, take cover. Our city doesn't have public shelters, so go inside any building away from windows. Second, wait for reports on local media. Finally, stay indoors until you hear the all clear signal.
