A scientific study has suggested that they can escape an area just before such a disaster strikes. The evidence, published yesterday in the Journal of Zoology, centres on a population of breeding(繁殖) frogs in Italy. It seems that, a few years ago, these creatures had suddenly escaped from their home five days before an earthquake struck their breeding ground. The frogs' ability to sense the earthquake is not fully understood, but 96 percent of male frogs escaped and returned a day after the danger had passed. This discovery confused Dr Rachel Grant, who hadn't set out to learn about frogs' reactions to earthquakes, but to study the effect of the lunar cycle on them. She now believes that frogs may be able to sense some signs and use them as an early-warning system for earthquakes. Frogs are not the only creatures born with an unusual power to predict natural disasters. In 2004, elephants in Thailand made loud noises before the tsunami hit, while bats in Sri Lanka flew around in anxiety before the disaster. While most of these animal warnings have been ignored, there are times when they have been noticed. In 1975, scientists in Haicheng, China, noticed unusual behaviour in the city's dogs and cats. They demanded the evacuation(撤离) of the citizens, expecting a major disaster. Their warning came five and a half hours before an earthquake struck, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths. Without the evacuation, far more people could have been killed. “There are things we can't see and sounds we can't hear. But many animals can. There is a sense called electroreception that sharks use to form a picture around them, while dolphins and bats use sonar to find their way around,” says Professor Daniel Mills, an expert in animal behaviour at Lincoln University. 1.What did Dr Rachel Grant think of the discovery of the frogs' unusual behaviour? A.Scared. B.Worried. C.Unexpected. D.Disappointed. 2.How is paragraph 4 mainly developed? A.By listing numbers. B.By giving examples. C.By explaining causes. D.By making comparisons. 3.What is the author's purpose of mentioning the earthquake in Haicheng? A.To stress the seriousness of the disaster. B.To praise the government's timely action. C.To describe a successful evacuation in history. D.To show the benefit of noticing animal warnings. 4.What are Professor Daniel Mills's words mainly about? A.Why animals can sense disasters. B.What his study will focus on next. C.How humans learn about the world. D.How animals behave before disasters. Ⅳ.七选五 [2026广东深圳期中] Do you live in harmony with your pet? 1 For example, you need to set clear boundaries for them, treat them with respect, and spend quality time together. Here are some ways that may help you develop a good relationship with your pet friend.     2     You should realize that it takes some time to build a long-lasting bond with your pet. Some animals, like dogs and cats, might naturally follow you around more easily than other smaller mammals and reptiles(爬行动物). Therefore, if your pet doesn't warm to you right away, you should give them more time. Be the boss. 3 Set aside time to practice them with your pet each day. If your pet breaks a rule, use body language and calm but firm words to let them know that what they have done is not permitted.    Understand your pet's body language. Body language is vastly different depending on what sort of animal you have chosen as your pet. If you're unsure of your pet's body language, consider buying a book or browsing some web pages devoted to your specific animal. 4     Regularly be around your pet. Your pet is only part of your life, but for them, you are their whole life. 5 Don't take no notice of them. Act happily when seeing them. How you show your pleasure in seeing them will depend on what type of pet they are.  A.Be patient with your pet. B.Be calm when they attack you. C.Set rules and boundaries, and stick to them. D.It's unwise to use some violent words to treat your pet. E.Then you will increasingly become a better communicator. F.That's why it's important to spend quality time with your pet. G.Actually, living with an animal is like living with a human friend. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. UNIT 2 WILDLIFE PROTECTION Part 3 Reading for Writing, Assessing Your Progress & Video Time 基础过关练 Ⅰ.1.attack 2.extinction 3.immediately 4.species; habitat(s) 5.remove Ⅱ.1. 故填up。 recover from... 故填from。 故填On。 remind sb. to do sth. 故填to behave。 The document与download之间为被动关系,根据“Wait a minute, please.” 故填is being downloaded。 Ⅳ.1.so that students can have a better understanding of 2.reminding me that 能力提升练 Ⅰ.1.protection 考查名词。“When it comes to...” 故填are。be of importance=be important。 故填to。 故填an。 故填To make。 故填To record。 have difficulty (in) doing sth. at a rate of... 故填at。 as a result of意为“由于;因为”,为固定搭配。故填a。 故填have hunted。 8.farther/further 考查副词的比较级。 故填are taken。 根据第三段中的“This discovery confused Dr Rachel Grant, who hadn't set out to learn about frogs' reactions to earthquakes”可知,Rachel Grant博士原本并非要研究青蛙对地震的反应,因此她对青蛙在地震前后的异常行为感到出乎意料。 第四段先提出观点“Frogs are not the only creatures born with an unusual power to predict natural disasters.”,接着举了2004年泰国的大象和斯里兰卡的蝙蝠的例子来支撑观点。 根据倒数第二段中的“In 1975, scientists in Haicheng, China, noticed unusual behaviour in the city's dogs and cats. They demanded the evacuation of the citizens...” 根据最后一段中Daniel Mills教授说的话“There are things...But many animals can. There is a sense called electroreception...while dolphins and bats use sonar...” 故选A。 特定的;明确的 1.G 下文“For example, you need to set clear boundaries for them, treat them with respect, and spend quality time together.” 下文“You should realize that it takes some time to build a long-lasting bond with your pet.” 故选A。 3.C 根据本段小标题“Be the boss.”和下文“Set aside time to practice them with your pet each day.” 4.E 上文“If you're unsure of your pet's body language, consider buying a book or browsing some web pages devoted to your specific animal.” 5.F 上文“Your pet is only part of your life, but for them, you are their whole life.”
