Miss Martha owned a small bakery (面包店). She was forty, a kind woman with a big imagination. She was always curious about the customers stepping into her little shop, wondering about their daily lives and hidden stories.
One customer made her very curious. Wearing simple but tidy old-fashioned clothes and a pair of glasses, he visited the bakery twice every single week. Without exception, he only bought two loaves of hard bread each time, never looking at her mouth-watering fruit pies or freshly-baked creamy cakes.
Miss Martha jumped to the conclusion that he must be a poor, hungry artist. She imagined him living in a very small, cheap room, thinking only about his painting so much that he forgot to eat. The idea touched her kind heart. She began to wish she could help him.
The next time he came to the shop, she acted quickly while his back was turned. She took two hard loaves, made a small hole in each, and put a large piece of fresh butter inside. Then she wrapped them up as usual.
Her heart beat fast as she handed him the bread. She spent the rest of the day dreaming that he would discover her kindness and thank her.
Suddenly, the quiet of the afternoon was broken. The shop door flew open, and the man stormed in. His face was dark with anger. He threw the bread down hard on the table.
“I am an architect (建筑师)!” he shouted. “For the past three months, I have been working on a building plan. I draw in pencil, and I use pieces of hard bread as erasers. It works better than a rubber eraser! But now… look!”
He held up his drawing. A huge, dirty mark from the butter ran across the clean, straight lines.
“You filled my bread with butter!” he shouted. “My work is damaged!”

①Regent honeyeaters are beautiful black and yellow birds living in Australia. There used to be large groups of them, but now they are in danger of dying out. Scientists are trying to help these birds survive by teaching young birds to sing correctly.
②The birds are endangered because people have cut down many forests where they live. Scientists guess there are only about 250 of these birds left in the wild. As their number has dropped, they live more separately. This causes a problem: young male (雄性的) honeyeaters in the wild don’t learn the right song. Male birds need this song to attract female birds and protect their living areas. If they can’t sing it correctly, they have trouble finding females.
③Some young honeyeaters sing a simple song. Others even copy songs from other kinds of birds. Because there are so few of the birds left in the wild, some zoos in Australia are raising these birds and hope to send them back to nature some day. But without learning from adult birds (成鸟), young honeyeaters raised in zoos can only learn a strange and simple song.
④To solve this problem, scientists tried different ways. First, they played a recorded song for the young birds, but it didn’t work. Then they put wild adult birds who sing well with young birds. These adult birds became “teachers”. After about three months, the young birds learned the right song.
⑤Scientists found that teaching worked best when each “teacher” had five or fewer young “students”. Later, these well-taught young birds also became “teachers” for new chicks. Now, more than half of the male honeyeaters raised in zoos can sing the correct song.
⑥Scientists are now setting these well-trained birds free into nature. They hope that as more and more honeyeaters know the right song, their number will grow. When they all sing the same song, it will be easier for them to find each other and raise more chicks.
33.Regent honeyeaters are in danger of dying out because ________.
A.zoos are raising a lot of birds B.other birds are copying their song
C.they can not find enough food D.people have destroyed their homes
34.What does the passage tell us about the young honeyeaters?
A.Over 50% of the male honeyeaters kept in zoos can learn the right song.
B.Birds raised in zoos can learn the song from adult honeyeaters at first.
C.Scientists managed to teach young birds by playing the recorded song.
D.Scientists set birds to nature after they learned a strange and simple song.
35.Which paragraphs are about scientists’ efforts to help honeyeaters? (①=Paragraph 1)
A.③④ B.④⑤ C.③④⑤ D.④⑤⑥
36.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Raising Poor Birds in Zoos B.Teaching Young Birds to Sing
C.Losing Forests and Wild Birds D.Learning Different Bird Songs
D
Do you care about the future of rainforests? Can destroyed forests turn green again? Will wild animals go back to their old homes? Many people worried about these things in the past. The latest research (研究) in 2026 brings us good news. Rainforests have great power to recover (恢复), and human protection can help them live better.
Rainforests are very important to our Earth. They cover less than 6 percent of the planet’s surface, but they protect more than half of the world’s living animals. In the past, in order to build farms or get wood, people often cut down many rainforest trees. This did great harm to nature. Scientists once believed that broken rainforests needed more than 100 years to get well again.
However, new studies show a much better result. Rainforests can recover far faster than we thought. After people stop harming the land, tall trees still need a long time to grow. Yet, this does not stop the rainforest from recovering. While the big trees are still growing, smaller plants and bushes cover the ground in a short time. As a result, most animals can come back within 30 years. Birds and monkeys from nearby forests bring seeds and help new plants grow. This helps the forest recover soon. Their fast recovery gives us huge hope. Sadly, some bacteria (细菌) in the land will die out forever. That means some harm cannot be fixed.
Thankfully, global protection work is getting better now. According to 2026 reports, the loss of rainforests in 2025 fell by 36 percent compared with 2024. Countries like Brazil and Colombia made strict rules to save the Amazon rainforest. Though hot weather and fires still hurt the forests, human actions will work very well.
37.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To explain how rainforests got badly hurt.
B.To introduce laws for protecting rainforests.
C.To talk about the animals living in rainforests.
D.To show rainforests can recover and need protection.
38.The underlined word “this” in the second paragraph refers to ________.
A.cutting down rainforest trees B.protecting the living animals
C.building farms or getting wood D.covering 6 percent of the surface
39.How does the writer feel about rainforests’ future?
A.Worried. B.Hopeful. C.Bored. D.Unsure.
40.What will the writer talk about next?
A.How rainforests will recover. B.Why rainforests are important.
C.What dangers rainforests will face. D.What we can do to protect rainforests.

Using paper with lines can keep you writing straight. You will not write up or down when you write English words or sentences. Those lines on the paper can help you to write words in the right size.
◆Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. For some kids, if they write slowly, their handwriting will be clear. If you write too fast, you may even make more mistakes.
◆Hold your pencil right
When you hold your pencil in a right way, writing is easy. Some kids press (按压) down really hard when they write. That makes the handwriting not nice. Try to be relaxed and don’t hold the pencil so hard. And then it makes your handwriting nice and clean.
◆Draw more pictures
Drawing can make your handwriting better. You need to use the skills to control (控制) your pencil better when you are drawing pictures. Even though you have no chance to draw at school, you can practice by yourself at home.
Handwriting is very important. Imagine (想象) you are a world-famous movie star or a well-known sports player, what do you do when your fans run up to you? Give them your autographs (亲笔签名) of course.
66.What can help you keep your English writing straight and in the right size?
67.When you write too fast, what problems can you have with your handwriting?
68.How many suggestions (建议) does the article give to improve English handwriting?
69.Why drawing pictures makes your handwriting better according to the article?

29.What does the first paragraph introduce?
A.The meaning of the story. B.The theme of the story.

30.Why did Miss Martha put butter in the man’s bread?
A.To make her bakery famous. B.To show her love for the man.

① The man went to the shop angrily.
② Miss Martha was curious about the man.
③ The man began to work on a building plan.
④ The man tried to erase lines with the bread that had butter inside.
A.②④①③ B.③②④① C.③④②① D.②③④①
32.What might Miss Martha realize in the end?
A.Good actions need real understanding first.
B.People had better try to make perfect plans.
C.You should avoid offering help to strangers.
D.It’s impolite to ask about other people’s lives.

31.第二段中“One customer made her very curious.”以及倒数第三段“For the past three months, I have been working on a building plan.” 最后一段“You filled my bread with butter!”以及倒数第四段“Suddenly, the quiet of the afternoon was broken. The shop door flew open, and the man stormed in. His face was dark with anger.”可知男人用涂了黄油的面包擦线条,导致工作受损,所以他怒气冲冲地来到商店,所以正确顺序是③②④①。

C
【答案】33.D 34.A 35.D 36.B

34.根据第五段“Now, more than half of the male honeyeaters raised in zoos can sing the correct song.”,超过一半(50%)的雄性吸蜜鸟学会了正确的(correct和right同义)歌声。
Teaching Young Birds to Sing”.

【答案】37.D 38.A 39.B 40.D

38.第二段中“this”所在句为:“This did great harm to nature.”,结合前文“people often cut down many rainforest trees”,说明“this”指代“砍伐雨林树木”的行为。注意前文“in order to build farms or get wood”是砍伐的目的,并不是this指代的内容。
39.第一段指出“brings us good news”、“Rainforests have great power to recover”,说明作者对雨林的未来充满希望。

Now students’ English handwriting (书法) gets bad. That makes their teachers feel worried. Is your English handwriting beautiful? If not, here are some ways for you.
◆Use paper with lines
