On May 10, 2025, the Jiangsu Football City League started at Zhenjiang Sports and Exhibition Center. It is a provincial amateur (业余) football competition, but it became very popular in China quickly. After only four rounds, more than 190,000 people watched the games in person. Online, hundreds of millions of people watched them too, according to Xinhua.
The league, also called “Su Super League”, runs from May to November. There are 13 teams, each from a different city in Jiangsu. First, all 13 teams play against each other once. Then the top 8 teams move to the knockout stage. They play to decide the top 4 teams, and finally the champion.
One big reason for the league’s success is that many common people can join. There are 516 players in all. Over 65% of them have different jobs—like college students, teachers, and delivery workers. Liu Tong, from Jiangsu Sports Bureau, said, “This is a new way to do basic-level soccer. It makes the game closer to people.”
The league is also popular because of its fun cultural vibe (气氛). Teams are named after local favourites: Wuxi is known for honey peaches, and Nanjing for its tasty salted duck. Soccer commentator (评论员) Xu Yifan said, “The League’s success shows that if we focus on local culture, let more people join in and have good games, community soccer can really work.”
Since the league began, slogans like “match comes first, friendship fourteenth” have been popular online. They show the competition between Jiangsu’s 13 cities. Ni Xialian is my sporting hero.
Ni Xialian was born in 1963, and she was the oldest table tennis player at the Paris Olympics in 2024. This time she did her best to play against her much younger opponent (对手), 23-year-old Sun Yingsha. Both of them showed all their skills and did their best in the game.
Though failed at last, Ni had no regrets and deeply thanked the people. At the interview after the match, she said that her dream was to play against the world’s top player at the Olympics, and it had come true. Before she played against Sun across the table, “Aunt Ni” was asked to be a training partner for Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin. That was because she had excellent skills.
Throughout Sun and Ni’s match, the CCTV reporter kept calling Ni “Master Ni” instead of using her full name to show respect for what she did for China’s table tennis. Ni has made great efforts in spreading table tennis around the world.
Though not standing for China, Ni is still winning the hearts of her country.

1. drown 2. Neither; nor 3. heard of 4. long 5. a number of 6. before 7. gave up; hard/difficult 8. won; cheers 9. fast 10. freestyle
| heard of | competed in | gave up | improved from | example of |
1.You may have never Eric Moussambani, the first Olympic swimmer from Equatorial Guinea.
2.Eric the 100-metre freestyle at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
3.He never no matter how hard it was.
4.His time for the 100-metre event 1 minute 52 seconds to under 57 seconds.
5.He is a true the Olympic spirit.
1.heard of 2.competed in 3.gave up 4.improved from 5.example of
方框中“competed in”表示“参加比赛”,且根据时间“at the 2000 Sydney Olympics”用一般过去时,所以填competed in。
“gave up”表示“放弃”,与“no matter how hard it was”构成让步关系,符合语义。所以填gave up。
空格后接“1 minute 52 seconds to under 57 seconds”,表示从…… 提高”,搭配“from…to…” 所以填improved from。
所以填example of。

You may have never heard of my favourite 1 (athlete), Eric Moussambani, the first Olympic swimmer from Equatorial Guinea.
Eric swam in the 100-metre freestyle at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. However, he had just begun swimming only six months before the games! The only swimming pool for him was a hotel pool about 13 metres long, and even then he could only use it for an hour every morning. In fact, the first time he ever saw an Olympic-sized 50-metre swimming pool was at the Olympics.
During his race, he swam well for the first 50 metres, but the last 15 metres of the race were 2 (especial) difficult for him. In fact, it looked like he was going to drown! But he tried hard to finish the race and won loud cheers from the crowd.
Though Eric Moussambani is not an Olympic medal winner, he is still my favourite athlete. He never gave up no matter how hard it was. With hard work and practice, Eric later became quite fast at the 100 metres. His time for the 100-metre event 3 (improve) from 1 minute 52 seconds to under 57 seconds! He later became the coach of the national swimming team for Equatorial Guinea, and he is a true example of the Olympic 4 (spirit).
His story shows that 5 (determine) and hard work can help us achieve great things, even if we start from a difficult position.
1.athlete 2.especially 3.improved 4.spirit 5.determination
