Four of the World's Natural Disasters
The following four natural disasters destroyed cities and communities around the world. By floods, ty-
phoons, or earthquakes, these events have collectively taken millions of human lives.
The Yangtze River Flood
The major flood of 1931 covered tens of thousands of square miles, flooding rice fields and many
cities, including Nanjing and Wuhan. The flood affected more than 50 million people. Government organiza-
tions, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, estimated(估计) that about 3.7 mil-
lion people died in this disaster.
Typhoon Nina
Typhoon Nina struck Henan province of China in August 1975. The typhoon caused a serious dam(水
坝) failure, and more than 150,000 people were dead or injured. According to reports, at least 26,000 people
died in the floods. About 145,000 people died from diseases caused by water pollution and famine(饥荒).
The number of people affected by the disaster was more than 10,000,000.
The Kashmir Earthquake
On October 8, 2005, a disastrous earthquake struck the Kashmir region. The earthquake registered a
magnitude of 7.6, followed by many aftershocks and landslides. The seriousness of the damage and the high
number of deaths were worsened by poor constructions(建筑物) in the affected areas. At least 73,000 people
were killed, and more than 32,000 buildings fell down.
The Haiti Earthquake
At the beginning of 2010, an earthquake hit Haiti. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.3 and
was followed by aftershocks that registered magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.5. Another aftershock with a magnitude
of 5.9 struck on January 20. There has been debate about the total number of deaths caused by this earth-
quake, but estimates suggest that about 200,000-300,000 people died. Hundreds of thousands more were
forced to leave their homes.

A rescue has been carried out and flood warnings are in place in Far North Queensland as Cyclone(气
Jasper caused widespread damage and flooding.
Rescue workers were called to Mossman, a town near Port Douglas, at about 12:40 am, where 18 peo-
ple had to be moved to safety because of dangerous flooding and then were taken to an evacuation centre in
the local library. Around 40,000 homes and businesses lost power, and the Captain Cook Highway was cut
off between Cairns and Port Douglas.
Although Cyclone Jasper was downgraded to a tropical (热带的) low on Thursday, it was a wild night,
bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Senior Meteorologist(气象学家) Laura Boekel said, “This event is
not over. We have seen about half a meter of rainfall in the last 24 hours across Far North Queensland.”
The Bureau of Meteorology warned of rising river levels in the Mossman River, which could reach lev-
els similar to the floods in January and February in 2019. Areas around Wujal Wujal, Cape Tribulation, and
Port Douglas faced the worst of the cyclone, and nearby communities like Palm Cove and Cairns were also
affected.
A weather warning remained in place across Far North Queensland. People from Cooktown to Port
Douglas were warned overnight to prepare for possible flooding. People in the storm's path were warned not
to be fooled by the calm conditions inside the cyclone's 70 km-wide eye, which was expected to take hours
to cross over some areas. “The eye is really big,” Boekel said on Wednesday night. “There's a period of
calm conditions in the eye itself. But you can't pick that time period to go out. Please stay in a safe place and
wait for the whole system to pass.” The cyclone was producing a wind speed of 140 km/h, with the central
wind speed of 100 km/h.

As climate change leads to longer wildfire seasons and increases the likelihood of disastrous fires, more
people in Western states find themselves searching for local wildfire information. But finding accurate(准确
的), specific and timely information can be challenging, especially in the middle of an emergency.
The information about a wildfire can come from many sources: emergency push warnings from county e-
mergency managers, texts and emails from the sheriff's department, social media posts from local, state and
firefighting agencies, and websites like InciWeb, which map fire lines.
Mills, a Silicon Valley tech guy who lives in the wilderness of Sonoma County, experienced this chaos(混
乱) of information after a near miss with 2020's Wallbridge Fire, in which 33 people were killed just in Cali-
fornia. Mills realized that it was only a matter of time before the situation happened to him again. He decid-
ed that he would do something about it—by building an app that would integrate all these sources of
wildfire information and make it easily available on smartphones. So he built Watch Duty in 80 days and it
went live and had 50,000 users in a week.
The app started relatively small, tracking fires across just three Northern California counties, but in four
years, it has grown to include the whole American West, Texas and Oklahoma.
The app contains many official sources of wildfire information. Still, its strength comes from a small
army of volunteer contributors and reporters with firefighting, emergency service and media experience who
watch wilderness camera live streams and listen in on(收听) firefighter radio communications in the field.
Volunteer Hancock explains that there are not many first responders, and an even smaller number who
are capable of broadcasting those communications and warnings through social media or by other means. He
points out that having another resource that reaches many in the community is lifesaving. With additional

people to become part of their team, more can be contributed to keeping the community safe.
28.Why is it hard to get quick and accurate fire details?
A.InciWeb doesn't map wildfires.
B.Few sources provide fire details.
C.Too many sources lead to confusion.
D.Local agencies ignore social media.
29.What does the underlined word “integrate” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Search. B.Combine. C.Schedule. D.Connect.
decided that he would do something about it...make it easily available on smartphones.”
30.What is the advantage of the app Watch Duty?
A.Its rich official sources.
B.Its professional-only contributors.
C.Its nationwide coverage in America.
D.Its real-time data from volunteer networks.
31.Why does the author mention Hancock?
A.To introduce lifesaving resources.
B.To advance the use of Watch Duty.
C.To call on more volunteers to join.
D.To discuss communication methods.
D
With the changing climate across the world, bird species that live in tropical areas—especially in the
remote, deep parts of Brazil's Amazon Rainforest—are slowly getting smaller in size. It was found that 80
tropical bird species had experienced a drop in body weight over the past 40 years. However, why the birds
changed in that way was unknown. Therefore, researchers decided to study the records of 15,000 birds living
in a rainforest within a few hours' drive from Manaus in Brazil.
The average temperature of the birds' habitat(栖息地) is 1℃ warmer in the wet season and 1.65℃
warmer in the dry season, compared with that 40 years ago. What's more, 13% more rain falls in the wet sea-
son and 15% less in the dry season. The birds have lost body weight more sharply after extremely dry or wet
seasons. This could be a short-term response to changes in their environment, such as a lack of rainfall caus-

ing a drop in the number of insects that the birds feed on.
“Weight is a generally good indication of the body condition of birds,” says Vitek Jirinec at the Inte-
gral Ecology Research Center in California, who led the study. “If they're simply not getting enough to eat,
you'd expect them to lose weight.”
Birds of the same species are generally larger in colder areas. The leading theory is that their smaller
surface-area-to-volume ratio (表面积与体积比) allows them to better save heat. “The opposite will help
smaller species in hot climates to cool and can explain why birds are getting smaller as the climate warms,”
says Jirinec.
“The physical changes during just four decades show why stopping destroying trees alone won't pre-
vent the ongoing extinction of animal species across the world,” says Camila Gmez, a scientist who stud-
ies evolutionary changes in birds. “This study also shows how human-caused changes in climate are con-

tributing to observed population declines in tropical birds,” says Gmez.
32.According to the first paragraph, what was the purpose of the study?
A.To record the changes in birds' body weight.
B.To prepare birds for their future migration.
C.To find the reason for birds' weight change.
D.To find a way to save the Amazon Rainforest.
33.In the study, what habitat changes did researchers find?
A.High temperatures are rare.
B.Weather gets more extreme.
C.Wet seasons are getting drier.
D.Rainfall increases in dry seasons.
34.How does Jirinec see the fact that birds are losing weight?
A.It helps them lose extra heat.
B.It makes them feel less cold.
C.It keeps them in good shape.
D.It enables them to hide easily.
故选A。
35.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Global Warming Is Threatening the Habitats of Birds
B.The Tropical Bird Population Is Experiencing a Sharp Drop
C.Tropical Birds Are Struggling to Survive the Dry Climate
D.Climate Change Is Causing Some Birds to Lose Weight

Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires, can strike at any time and
cause serious harm. 36 . Below are some clear measures you can follow to prevent danger, and act safe-
ly if a disaster hits.
•Build an emergency kit. 37 : a flashlight, a first-aid kit, bottled water, food (such as energy bars),
and a basic tool like a knife. Don't forget copies of important documents (your passport, ID). Keep your kit
in a place you can reach in seconds.
•Know local risks and evacuation routes (路线). Find out which natural disasters are common in your
area—earthquakes, floods, or storms—and search the nearest shelter, high ground, or safe room. 38 .
Practice following these routes so that, in an emergency, you can move calmly and quickly.

pressure. Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” for earthquakes, or “Get Low and Go” for floods. Addi-
tionally, practice basic first-aid skills, such as treating cuts, burns, or shock. If you master these skills, you
can help yourself and others before professional rescuers arrive.
•Stay informed and communicate clearly. Always have a reliable way to receive updates when power fails.
You can sign up for local warning systems and follow official social media accounts, agree on a family or
group meeting point and an out-of-area contact person—someone who can relay messages if local lines go
dead. 40 .

故填its。
填has completed。
故填in。
故填the。
risk one's life to
do/doing sth.
故填is needed。

Dear Jim,
I hope this email finds you well. Our school is going to invite an expert to give a speech on disas-
ter escape, aiming to improve students' emergency response capabilities. The speech will be held in the
school hall at 3:00 p.m. next Friday.
The expert will mainly talk about common disasters like earthquakes, floods and fires, and introduce
practical escape skills and self-rescue methods. For example, how to quickly evacuate in an earthquake and
what to do when you are caught in a flood or a fire.
I think it will be a great chance to learn some life-saving knowledge. Are you interested in coming?
Looking forward to your reply.

For my family, a vacation in Penang is a yearly event. My mother and father were raised in Penang, so
they loved Penang cuisine. Each December, we'd go to the island and take a three-day tour of their favorite
places for meals.
That year we began the trip to the north on a Friday morning. It took us six hours to arrive at our desti-
nation. We always stayed at a hotel in Batu Ferringhi. The beach was only a few steps away from the hotel,
and our rooms had a beautiful ocean view. We spent our first night playing on the beach. Then, we went
back to the hotel rooms and started playing games. My parents had a rule for our holidays that we should
spend time doing something together. There was no television or network.
We reached Bukit Bendera the following day, and then wandered around the mountain for the rest of

the afternoon, visiting our favorite shops. We were drinking tea in a cafe when we heard someone talking
about an earthquake off Sumatra, an Indonesian island. After we returned to our hotel, we left for the beach.
We went for a stroll on the beach, collecting shells along the way. When I looked up, I could see that the
sunlight was more brilliant than I had imagined. Far away, I could see a big tree shaking under the sunlight.
We didn't think anything terrible was going to happen. All of a sudden, I realized something strange. It was
as if the sea were moving away from the coast. I called my dad to check out this strange event. My dad took
a look and his face went pale. In the distance we could see a gray line approaching the coast. It seemed to
grow taller within seconds.

One possible version:
My dad shouted at us to hurry back to the hotel. He held my arm and dragged me along. As we got to the
gate of the hotel, we heard a noise coming from behind. My father urged us to hide upstairs. We were in a
state of terror, and as we got to the second level, we could hear the roar of running water. My dad was
screaming at us to go up. On the fourth level we paused, staring at the water beneath. It stopped growing. A
few minutes later, it started to fall.
We waited a long time before going downstairs. As soon as the running water stopped, we could see the un-
recognizable gate of the hotel. The hotel was filled with mud and destroyed furniture. There were also some
people who fell into the water and fainted or cried out in pain. What we saw weakened our hearts, so we de-
cided to assist the victims after a narrow escape. Never had I had such a thrilling but dangerous vacation be-
fore. The special visit to Penang left a deep impression on me.
