There is a famous saying: "Need is the mother of invention." This means that a need or a problem encourages creative efforts to meet the need or solve the problem. For example, the need for communication brought about the telephone, and the need for entertainment led to the creation of the television. To solve the problem of seeing in the dark, people invented the light bulb.

📖
Philo Farnsworth was an American inventor. From an early age, he showed great interest in television. He believed that machines were too slow to work with pictures. Only an electronic system could do that fast enough. In 1927, he invented the all-electronic television system.
How to Use Rereading
Where I stopped:
“could do that fast enough”
What question I ask myself:
What does “that” mean?
What I reread:
“too slow to work with pictures”
What I know now:
“do that” means ”________________”.

Activity 2 Read the text and complete the steps of using rereading strategy.
Can you explain how a discovery is different from an invention? Take Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America and Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb as examples. Columbus discovered the land, but the land existed long before he found it. However, in Edison’s case, there was no light bulb in the world before Edison created it. Now, do you see the difference?
