Passage 1
A Journey of Perseverance
When I was ten years old, I told my parents that I wanted to learn to play the violin. My parents were very supportive and bought me a violin. I started taking lessons with a teacher. At first, I was very excited and practised every day.
However, after a few months, I found that playing the violin was much harder than I had thought. My fingers hurt, and the sounds I made were terrible. I felt frustrated and wanted to give up. When my teacher noticed this, she encouraged me. “Playing a musical instrument takes time and patience,” she said. “Every great musician started just like you.”
I decided to keep trying. I practised every day after school. While I was practising, I often made mistakes. But I didn’t stop. After two years of practice, I could play several songs quite well. When I performed in my first school concert, I felt very proud.
Now I have been playing the violin for five years. I still have a lot to learn, but I know that if I keep practising, I will get better. I learned that success does not come overnight. It comes from hard work and never giving up.

Passage4
(Bella wrote a social media post about one of her favorite books.)
Do you enjoy reading? Which book has changed you most? I’m Bella. I spend my free time in the library, touching the pages of fairy tales and adventure stories. Sometimes I imagine I’m flying with the characters across oceans. Sometimes I feel their fears and joys as if they were my own.
My cousin Leo once told me to read the book The Lighthouse. I’m so glad I followed his advice and read it. It has become my favorite book. I couldn’t put it down from the moment I opened the first page. I like it because the main character, Max, and his brave journey give me a lot of courage. They make me stronger when I meet hard things in life.
The story is about Max. He moves to a small island with his grandparents. He tries hard to get used to the windy, lonely place. At first, it’s really hard for him to find his place. He is quiet and new here. He doesn’t know how to fit in. I can understand Max’s feelings. I also moved to a new city last year. I felt lonely and lost, too.
What moves me most is that Max never gives up. He learns to repair the old lighthouse bravely, shows his skills to the villagers, and finally becomes a respected helper. The book tells us about Max’s true feelings and the small troubles he meets, and it writes these things very clearly. That makes the story so real and easy to understand, like I’m right there with him, experiencing all those moments together.

Passage 1
(25-26九年级上·江苏无锡·期中)
Shi Yuhao: A Brave Long Jumper
Shi Yuhao is a great Chinese long jumper. His story is full of ups and downs, but he never gave up. Over 8 years, he has grown from a nervous teen to a Bronze (铜牌)-Medal-Winner at the World Athletics Championships.
In 2017, 18-year-old Shi went to the World Championships for the first time. He got to the final but felt so nervous that he cried. Even so, he finished sixth. Before that, he was already a talent. At 17, he set the Asian youth record of 8.30 meters in 2016. People thought he would have a bright future.
But bad luck came in 2018. At the Shanghai Diamond League on a rainy night, Shi lost his balance upon landing and hurt his bone badly in his left foot while jumping. He couldn’t compete for five years. It was a hard time, but he worked hard to make himself stronger. He even changed his takeoff foot to the right one. His coach took him to train with Su Bingtian, a top sprinter (短跑运动员). This helped Shi a lot.
Shi’s hard work paid off in 2023 at the National Athletics Championships, where he jumped 8.18 meters. Then in September 2025, 26-year-old Shi went to the World Championships again. Unlike his first appearance in 2017, Shi was relaxed and calm—so much so that he “felt like singing” before the final. In the final, he jumped 7.84 meters on his first attempt (尝试), then improved to 8.33 meters on his second—his personal best of the season, and won a bronze medal for China and his first medal at the world championships.
Talent is good, but the spirit of never giving up helps him go further. From a crying 18-year-old to a medal-winning 26-year-old, Shi has not only rewritten his own story but also showed young people how to face difficulties in life. He is a true hero!
1.How old was Shi Yuhao at his first World Athletics Championships?
2.What happened to Shi Yuhao at the 2018 Shanghai Diamond League?
3.Who helped Shi Yuhao train for his comeback?
4.What was Shi Yuhao’s best jump in the 2025 World Athletics Championships final?
5.What can you learn from Shi Yuhao’s success?

My parents were basketball players back in the 1970s. I heard so many great stories about them, about how they played and how good they were. My dear mum and dad, the gift I had from them was not only height. It was much more. They taught me how to think, how to make decisions.
My basketball journey began on the back of coach Li Zhangmin’s bicycle when he gave me a ride to my very first practice on the basketball court.
Many people know the story that began NBA when the Rockets chose me in 2002. Not many people know how much effort the Rockets put in before I arrived and throughout my career. I consider Houston my second home, so I want to say something to the people of Houston. You stood by me in good and bad times. You gave me strength to move forward.
